(US NCAA) College basketball heats up as March Madness sweeps US

EMMITSBURG, MD - Over the next three weeks, a peculiar syndrome will sweep over the United States, sending Americans into a collective tizzy as they ditch work, lay bets and obsess over something called "brackets."

Welcome to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division One Men's Basketball Championship, better known as March Madness for the way it seizes the nation's attention for the better part of a month.

Sixty-eight teams are vying for glory. On April 7, one will take the coveted NCAA title in Texas. And some of the stars of college basketball will quickly make their way to the professional ranks.

(Formula One) Red Bull appeals Ricciardo disqualification from F1's season-opening race in Australia

PARIS — Formula One team Red Bull has officially appealed to motor sport's governing body over Daniel Ricciardo's disqualification from last weekend's season-opening Australian Grand Prix.

The Australian driver thrilled the home crowd with a second-place finish behind German winner Nico Rosberg to secure what looked like his first career podium on his debut for Red Bull, where he replaced veteran driver Mark Webber during the offseason.

However, he was stripped of the result due to a technical breach. Race stewards said his car violated fuel-flow rules introduced this year which limit cars to 100 kilograms of fuel during the race.

The FIA subsequently disqualified Ricciardo, elevating McLaren drivers Kevin Magnussen and Jenson Button to second and third, respectively.

(FIBA) There are No Underdogs in Group B

ANTIBES (FIBA Basketball World Cup) - Senegal's center Saer Sene disagrees that his country along with the Philippines are the underdogs of Group B of 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup, which also includes Croatia, Greece, Argentina and Puerto Rico.

For Sene, Senegal's 41st place in the FIBA Ranking Men, behind the Philippines (34th), does not necessary mean that both teams are to be trounced.

"They should not rule us out. There are no underdogs in this group because are all at same level," the 2.11m big man told FIBA.com.

The teams that finish in the top four of each group qualify for the next round, and Sene says he will do everything he can to take Senegal beyond Sevilla, where Group B action takes place.

"People keep saying that Croatia, Greece and Argentina are the strongest teams in the group. I'm afraid but I disagree. There is no such thing in a tournament of this dimension, because of the high competitiveness involved.

"It is not only between Senegal and the Philippines to compete for the last two places in the group. There are no unbeatable teams in our pool," Sene explained.

(UFC) Mark Muñoz to face Mousasi at UFC Fight Night 41

MANILA, Philippines - After a disappointing setback this past October, Filipino-American mixed martial artist Mark Muñoz will return to action on May 31 (June 1 in the PHI) to redeem himself by squaring off with highly-touted combatant Gegard Mousasi in a five-round headliner.

The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) publicly confirmed the fight booking on Friday (PHI time) and is scheduled to take place at the O2 World Berlin in Germany.

The event, dubbed as “UFC Fight Night 41,” marks the promotion’s third venture in Germany and its first since UFC 122 in November 2010, when Yushin Okami routed Nate Marquardt via unanimous decision.

(Volleyball) Ateneo trounces Adamson in Shakey's V-League Season 11 opener

MANILA, Philippines - Fresh from winning their first UAAP women's volleyball crown last week, the Ateneo Lady Eagles dealt Adamson University an opening day loss in the Shakey's V-League Season 11 First Conference on Sunday, March 23 at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

The Lady Eagles played catch-up while shrugging off rust in the early goings of each set before getting things done in the end to deny Adamson University in four sets, 25-19, 18-25, 25-23, 26-24 sans head coach Anusorn 'Tai' Bundit. Assistant coach Parley Tupaz manned the helm for Ateneo in his absence.

(Volleyball) Defending champs National U silences Perpetual at Shakey's V-League

MANILA, Philippines - Reigning champions National University wasted no time in dispatching University of Perpetual Help to start their title defense with a bang in the Shakey's V-League Season 11 First Conference on Sunday, March 23 at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

The Lady Bulldogs didn’t need to bring their A-games as the Lady Altas turned in an erratic showing on floor coverage, bowing down in straight sets, 25-20, 25-14, 25-15.
