(La Liga) Puyol to leave Barcelona at end of season

BARCELONA - Barcelona captain Carles Puyol will leave the club at the end of the season following a persistent battle with a knee injury, he said on Tuesday.

The 35-year-old defender, a fans' favorite for his battling displays, has been restricted to just five league games this season and has decided to end his time at the Nou Camp.

Puyol, who made his Barca debut in 1999, has the second highest number of appearances for the club with 593, only bettered by Xavi Hernandez.

"I will leave FC Barcelona at the end of the season," he told a news conference.

(US NCAA) Wiggins not wavering in decision to leave for NBA

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) -- Andrew Wiggins remembers sitting in the bleachers of Allen Fieldhouse long after the final whistle, watching as the crowd showered the departing Kansas players with love.

It may not have been that exact moment that the nation's No. 1 recruit decided he would play his only season of college basketball with the Jayhawks. But the outpouring of support on senior night certainly played a role in his decision, one that he doesn't regret for a moment.

(NBA) Sacramento Kings sign Royce White to 10-day deal

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) -- The Sacramento Kings have signed forward Royce White to a 10-day contract.

The Kings immediately assigned White to the Reno Bighorns of the NBA Development League on Thursday. White was drafted 16th overall by Houston in 2012 but never played for the Rockets after the sides couldn't find common ground on how to treat his anxiety disorder, which includes a fear of flying.

White missed training camp and was suspended by the Rockets in January 2013 after he refused to accept another assignment to Rio Grande Valley of the D-League. The Rockets traded White to Philadelphia in July. He played for the 76ers in the preseason before being waived.

The former Iowa State standout averaged 11.4 points, 5.7 rebounds and 3.3 assists in 16 contests with Rio Grande Valley.

(NBA) Report: Phil Jackson 'ready to get back to work' in NBA

Eleven NBA championships isn't enough for Phil Jackson. Apparently he wants an even dozen now.

After leading the Chicago Bulls to six NBA crowns and the Los Angeles Lakers to five, Jackson is "ready to go back to work," according to ESPN.com.

After several health battles, Jackson is apparently fit and ready to get back along the sidelines or, ala Miami's Pat Rley, in the front office of an NBA club.

(Forumula One) F1's latest rules leaves cars quieter, slower

MADRID (AP) — Formula One's latest changes mean the sixy purr of engines and the violent throttle of speed won't quite be what they used to be.

The usual title talk has surrounded preseason testing as usual, but the normally boisterous roar of F1's engines has been slightly subdued.

Get used to it.

"I've grown up with the 'old' sound, and I loved it. Some of the old cars that had the exhaust coming under the floor, the sound was just awesome — just from the TV," Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton said. "The V10 and V8 of the last few years, with their special roar, had goose-bumps potential. When you started the engine you had to cover your ears. That's history. F1 is moving on."

(Boxing) Mayweather-Maidana fight set for MGM Grand

AS VEGAS (AP) -- Floyd Mayweather revealed on Twitter that his May 3 fight against WBA welterweight champion Marcos Maidana will take place at the MGM Grand.

"I will be fighting at the best place on Earth on May 3rd ... the MGM Grand," Mayweather, the WBC welterweight champion, tweeted Wednesday.

The bout will unify their 147-pound titles.

Mayweather, 45-0 with 26 knockouts, is coming off victories last year over Robert Guerrero and Canelo Alvarez. Maidana, from Argentina, is 35-3 with 31 knockouts. He unanimously outpointed Adrien Broner on Dec. 14.

(NBA) Ilgauskas to have jersey retired by Cavs

CLEVELAND (AP) -- At 7-foot-3, Zydrunas Ilgauskas towered over everyone yet stayed completely down to earth.

Soft-spoken and doggedly determined, Ilgauskas, who overcame serious injuries and personal tragedy to become one of Cleveland's best and most beloved players, will have his No. 11 jersey retired Saturday night during an elaborate halftime ceremony certain to be emotionally poignant.

The seventh player in team history to receive the honor, Ilgauskas joins Austin Carr, Nate Thurmond, Bobby ''Bingo'' Smith, Larry Nance, Brad Daugherty and Mark Price in having his number raised to the rafters of Quicken Loans Arena.

(UAAP Volleyball) La Salle exacts revenge on Ateneo in Finals Game 2

MANILA, Philippines – Not this time.

The De La Salle University Lady Spikers are one win away from raising the championship trophy for the fourth straight time as they avenged their Game 1 loss to Ateneo de Manila, running away as 25-14, 25-20, 19-25, 26-24 winners in Game 2 of the 76th UAAP Women’s Volleyball tournament Finals, Saturday, March 8, at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.

Ara Galang, after falling short of the MVP race this year, proved her worth for the Taft Avenue crew as she scattered 17 points in the game to lead La Salle to a four-set win and snap Ateneo’s eight-game winning streak.
