(UAAP Volleyball) Ateneo forces winner-take-all Game 4 after five-setter win over La Salle

MANILA, Philippines – And we’re off to a do-or-die Game 4.

With their backs pressed against the wall, the Ateneo de Manila University Lady Eagles managed to live another day as they edged De La Salle University in a thrilling five-setter, 25-21, 25-23, 18-25, 16-25, 17-15, in Game 3 of the 76th UAAP Women’s Volleyball Finals, Wednesday, March 12 at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

Not even Ara Galang’s 28-point explosion can stop the Katipunan Avenue crew as they set themselves one last Finals date with the Lady Spikers on Saturday, to try to thwart La Salle’s aspirations of a historic four-peat this year.

(NBA) Lakers convince Kobe Bryant to sit out remainder of season

Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant wanted to continue his attempt to play again season, but was convinced by the team it would be better for his health if he not return, league source told Yahoo Sports.

Bleacher Report first reported Bryant will not return this season because the fracture of the lateral tibial plateau in his left knee has been slow to heal. The Lakers said Bryant was examined by team physician Dr. Steve Lombardo on Wednesday.

"With Kobe's injury still not healed, the amount of time he’d need to rehab and be ready to play, and the amount of time remaining in the season, we’ve simply run out of time for him to return," Lakers athletic trainer Gary Vitti said in a statement released by the team. "However, Kobe will have the entire offseason to heal, rehab and prepare, and we look forward to him being 100 percent for the start of next season."

(UAAP Volleyball) Final faceoff between Ateneo and La Salle draws huge crowd, and scalpers make a killing as expected

ATENEO and La Salle students and alumni came in droves to the MOA Arena, as expected, but quite a large number of fans from other schools surprisingly braved the long queues to see top volleyball action in Saturday’s title decider of the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament.

A few patrons asked by Spin.ph said they have been in line as early as 10 a.m. to purchase limited upper box and lower box tickets sold at the Marina ticket booth on Saturday.

There were also long lines seen at the Mall of Asia cinema ticket booth on Friday where tickets were also made available on a two-tickets-per-person basis.

(UAAP Volleyball) Ateneo's giant killers complete dream run to first UAAP championship with rout of La Salle

ATENEO'S giant-killers completed an improbable run to a maiden UAAP women's volleyball championship, beating top seed De La Salle one final time, 25-23, 26-24, 25-21, on Saturday to cap one of the most amazing playoff stories in the league's history.

Hardly given a chance to win a championship after losing most of its stars from the previous season, the Lady Eagles won their fifth do-or-die game of the playoffS to deny their thrice-to-beat arch-rivals Lady Spikers a record fourth league championship.

Instead, it was underdog Ateneo which ended a dry spell that spanned 36 years while avenging two previous finals setbacks at the hands of a supreme De La Salle team.

(UFC) Hector Lombard dominates Jake Shields at UFC 171

Jake Shields felt he was being overlooked as a welterweight contender heading into tonight's UFC 171 event by being booked against former Bellator champion Hector Lombard. Instead, Lombard proved that he himself can hang with the division's elite by battering Shields for three rounds en route to a unanimous decision win.

Lombard landed big punches on the feet, tossed Shields to the ground at will throughout the bout and defended all of Shields' take down attempts. Yet, whenever Lombard appeared on the cusp of putting Shields away on the ground, the Cuban Judoka took his foot off the gas and chose to settle into Shields' guard instead of unloading with punches.

As a result, Lombard managed to both prove that his skills place him in the welterweight division's upper crest and show that, unlike many others near the top, he is either unwilling or unable to fight for every minute of every fight. Be that as it may, Lombard now owns a win over a top welterweight contender and will likely be content with that accomplishment.

(UFC) Tyron Woodley stops Carlos Condit at UFC 171

Tyron Woodley stopped Carlos Condit in the second round of their title eliminator's fight tonight in the second round of their UFC 171 co-main event. The stoppage occurred after Woodley managed to injure the former WEC champion's right knee with a take down and kick.

A double leg take down from Woodley in the second twisted Condit's right knee in an awkward way and the fighter out of Albuquerque yelled out and grimmaced in pain. Condit fought on, however, until a leg kick from Woodley to "The Natural Born Killer's" left leg, spun him around and made his right knee buckle once more.

Condit fell to the floor, his back to Woodley, and held onto his right leg while yelling out in pain once more. The referee stepped in to stop the fight at that point.

(UFC) UFC 171: Johny Hendricks outlasts Robbie Lawler to win welterweight title in tight decision

DALLAS – Johny Hendricks lost a razor-thin decision for the welterweight title in his last outing, and he won one on Saturday in the main event of UFC 171.

Hendricks won 48-47 on all three judges' cards, defeating Robbie Lawler in a stirring battle for the belt that had been vacated in December by Georges St-Pierre.

Hendricks was cut by the right eye and Lawler closed his eye with a powerful jab midway through the fight, but he pulled it out by rallying to win the fifth.

(UAAP) La Salle is UAAP overall champion for the second straight year

LA SALLE may still be hurting from its loss in women’s volleyball but the Green Archers will lift the biggest trophy after winning the general championship of the UAAP Season 76.

The closing ceremony is set Wednesday at the Century Park Hotel Grand Ballroom in Manila.

La Salle bagged five titles — men’s and women’s basketball, men’s taekwondo and table tennis and women’s chess — to win the overall crown for the second straight season.

The Taft-based team tallied 289 points, while University of Santo Tomas took second spot with 274 points despite winning only two events — women’s taekwondo and poomsae. The Tigers gained points with second-place finishes in men’s beach volleyball, taekwondo and athletics and in women’s beach volleyball, fencing and athletics.

(Formula One) Rosberg wins as Hamilton and Vettel go out in Australia

Nico Rosberg led from start to finish to win while Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel failed to finish the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne.

Mercedes star Rosberg got a perfect start to claim the lead from team-mate and pole-sitter Hamilton, and never looked troubled thereafter.

Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo originally claimed what seemed an impressive second place in front of his home crowd, but was later stripped of his accolade as a subsequent investigation showed that his car had consistent exceeded the maximum allowable fuel flow rate allowed under 2014 rules.
