GRENOBLE, France (AP) — Formula One great Michael Schumacher's condition was stable but still critical overnight as he remained unconscious following a brain injury suffered in a skiing accident, his manager said Wednesday.

(Tennis) Perfect serve sets up Williams-Sharapova semi

Brisbane (Australia) (AFP) - Serena Williams Thursday served a perfect first set on her way to setting up a blockbuster semi-final against bitter rival Maria Sharapova at the Brisbane International.

The top-seeded Williams did not lose a point on serve during the opening set during her comprehensive 6-3, 6-3 win over Slovakia's Dominika Cibulkova.

In stark contrast to Williams, Sharapova was forced to recover from an error-strewn start before eventually downing 2012 champion Kaia Kanepi in three sets 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.

(Tennis) Williams turns back Azarenka to win Brisbane International

BRISBANE, Australia — This was one time Serena Williams didn't mind being pushed into the deep end, to use her own description.

(Tennis) Nadal starts season in style, downs Monfils in Qatar Open title match

DOHA, Qatar — Rafael Nadal opened his 2014 campaign by winning his first title of the year in defeating Gael Monfils, 6-1, 6-7 (5), 6-2, in the Qatar Open on Saturday.

Nadal showed why he's the top player in the world all week long. Although he wasn't in top form in this first event of the season, he battled to win his 61st career title, one shy of Guillermo Vilas' total, seventh on the all-time Open era list.

(NBA) Rodman and ex-NBA All Stars arrive in North Korea

PYONGYANG, North Korea (AP) — Dennis Rodman and a team of former National Basketball Association players arrived in North Korea on Monday for a game he says will be a "birthday present" for one of their most unlikely fans: leader Kim Jong Un.

Rodman's squad — featuring ex-All Stars Kenny Anderson, Cliff Robinson and Vin Baker — will play against a team of North Koreans on Wednesday, which is believed to be Kim's birthday. The former NBA players also include Eric "Sleepy" Floyd, guard Doug Christie and Charles D. Smith, who played for the New York Knicks. Four streetballers are also on the squad.

(UFC-MMA) Dominick Cruz Injured, Vacates Belt; Renan Barão to Defend Against Urijah Faber at UFC 169

UFC president Dana White on Monday revealed that UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz has suffered a groin injury that would force him out of his return to unify his title with the interim belt of Renan Barão at UFC 169.

With the injury, and having already been sidelined for more than two years, Cruz will vacate the title. Barão immediately becomes the sole UFC bantamweight champion.

(Tennis) Rafa Nadal and Serena Williams named top seeds in Australian Open

MELBOURNE, Australia  — As expected, world No. 1 Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams have been made the top seeds at the Australian Open which begins on Monday at Melbourne Park.

Defending champion Novak Djokovic is the No. 2-seeded man, followed by David Ferrer, Wimbledon champion Andy Murray, Juan Martin del Potro and 17-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer at sixth.

On the women's side, defending champion Victoria Azarenka is No. 2, followed by Maria Sharapova, Li Na, Agnieszka Radwanska and former Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova in sixth.

The 32 seeds were only altered twice from the rankings, both because of injuries. No. 29-ranked Jurgen Melzer is not playing due to a left shoulder injury and Maria Kirilenko, who would have been seeded 18th, has a left knee injury.
