(Tennis) Matches stopped due to extreme heat in Australian Open

MELBOURNE, Australia — The scorching weather at the Australian Open finally brought play to a halt on Thursday afternoon when the temperature topped 42 Celsius (108 Fahrenheit) and the Extreme Heat Policy was enforced.

Matches on the outer courts were stopped at the end of sets that were in progress when the policy went into effect. Play was not scheduled to restart until 5 p.m. local time.

(Tennis) Williams sisters out of doubles at Aussie Open

MELBOURNE, Australia — Venus and Serena Williams have withdrawn from the doubles competition at the Australian Open, shortly before their first-round match was scheduled to be played on Friday.

Tournament officials said the sisters pulled out because of an injury to Venus' lower left leg.

The announcement came shortly after Serena Williams, a five-time singles champion in Australia, won her third-round singles match against Daniela Hantuchova in temperatures of almost 40C (104F).

The Williams sisters have combined for 13 career Grand Slam doubles titles. They were unseeded at Melbourne Park after only playing four tournaments together last year.

(Tennis) Li advances to 4th round at Australian Open

MELBOURNE — Two-time finalist Li Na broke Lucie Safarova's serve in the second set when the Czech player was serving for the match and came back for a 1-6, 7-6 (2), 6-3 win in the third round of the Australian Open on Friday.

The victory came despite an out-of-sorts Li serving inconsistently and failing to take advantage of key break-point chances for much of the first two sets. But fourth-seeded Li dominated the tiebreaker, then broke Safarova in the eighth game of the deciding set before serving out.

She later joked that the heat wave wasn't warm enough, so wanted to play three sets.

Li, the 2011 French Open winner, lost to Victoria Azarenka in last year's Australian Open final and to Kim Clijsters in the 2011 decider at Melbourne Park.

(Tennis) No. 3 Ferrer reaches 4th round at Aussie Open

MELBOURNE — Third-seeded David Ferrer has advanced to the fourth round of the Australian Open with a 6-2, 7-6 (5), 6-2 win over Frenchman Jeremy Chardy on Friday.

The Spaniard has reached at least the fourth round for 15 consecutive Grand Slam tournaments, dating back to Wimbledon in 2010. He was a semifinalist last year at Melbourne Park, losing to eventual champion Novak Djokovic.

The 31-year-old Ferrer had a career-best year in 2013, reaching his first Grand Slam final at the French Open and finishing the year at No. 3 in the rankings.

He meets Florian Mayer in the fourth round after the German player defeated No. 20-seeded Jerzy Janowicz of Poland in straight sets earlier Friday.

Sharapova's boyfriend, Grigor Dimitrov, progressed to the second week at a major for the first time when he converted his fifth match point to beat No. 11-seeded Milos Raonic of Canada 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (10).

Ivanovic ends Williams' streak in Australian upset
By JOHN PYE (AP Sports Writer)
AP - Sports

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) -- Serena Williams' long winning streak came to an end in a stunning fourth-round defeat to Ana Ivanovic at the Australian Open on Sunday.

Ivanovic hadn't won a set in her four previous matches against Williams, who had been a hot favorite to win a sixth Australian Open crown for her 18th Grand Slam title. Williams later admitted she'd been bothered by a back problem in practice in recent days and considered pulling out of the tournament.

The No. 14-seeded Ivanovic set up the 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 win by attacking the best serve in women's tennis. She frequently stood well inside the baseline to receive, she took big swipes on her forehand and generally put Williams off her rhythm.

''It's not easy playing such a champion ... but she is also just a human,'' said Ivanovic, who beat Venus Williams in the final of the WTA event at Auckland, New Zealand earlier this month. ''I just went out there swinging at the ball.''

Williams hadn't lost a match since August, one of only four defeats in 2013, and came into the fourth round with 25 straight wins. It was her 70th match at Melbourne Park, a record in the Open era, and she'd already set the mark for most match wins ever at the Australian Open with her third-round victory.

''Again, I don't want to blame anything. I feel like Ana deserves all the credit,'' Williams added. ''I feel she played unbelievable today. I think she went for her shots. It's not like I gave her the match.''

Ivanovic got on top early in the second set with some powerful forehand winners and never really let Williams back into the contest.

The 2008 French Open champion had 33 winners, including 20 on her forehand side.

Ivanovic advanced to a quarterfinal against the winner of Sunday's later match between Australian wild-card entry Casey Dellacqua and No. 30-seeded Eugenie Bouchard of Canada.

The other quarterfinal on this half will feature two women who'll turn 32 next month, with two-time finalist Li Na beating No. 22 Ekaterina Makarova 6-2, 6-0 and No. 28 Flavia Pennetta upsetting No. 9 Angelique Kerber 6-1, 4-6, 7-5.

Finally Ana Ivanovic slays the ghost named Serena Williams. ;D

(Tennis) Another star shown Melbourne exit as Cibulkova turns back error-prone Sharapova

MELBOURNE, Australia — Maria Sharapova followed Serena Williams out of the Australian Open after the second fourth-round upset in 24 hours.

Third-seeded Sharapova lost 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 to Dominika Cibulkova on Monday, struggling with her serve in the second and third sets and making 45 unforced errors as she tried to claw her way back.
