(SEA Games) Victories in taekwondo, muay can't save Team PH from falling to worst SEAG finish ever

NAY PYI TAW –Team Philippines tried valiantly, but still fell short in realizing its two modest goals in the 27th Southeast Asian Games.

Heavyweights Kirstie Elaine Alora and Kristopher Robert Uy came up with the gold medals in taekwondo and so did Preciosa Ocaya in muay Saturday. But their efforts were not enough to enable the Filipinos to achiever their twin targets of retaining sixth place overall and hitting the 30-gold plateau.

(SEA Games) Team PH slips to worst finish ever as SEA Games formally comes to a close

NAY PYI TAW – The Philippines formally closed its campaign in the 27th Southeast Asian Games at seventh place, its worst finish since it started competing in 1977.

With only 29 gold, 34 silver and 37 bronze medals to show, the Philippines bowed to powerhouse Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and even Myanmar at the conclusion of the 11-day tourney Sunday in this sprawling Burmese capital.

(UFC-MMA) Anderson Silva: “The Last Fight is in the Past… Everything is Going to be Different Now”

On July 6, the crowd inside the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas sat stunned as Chris Weidman dethroned the greatest champion in UFC history, Anderson Silva, by knockout in the second round of the UFC 162 main event.

(NBA) LeBron James wins AP Male Athlete of the Year

MIAMI (AP) -- The only thing that keeps LeBron James up worrying at night is basketball, which simultaneously makes perfect sense and no sense.

On one hand, he's the game's best player.

On the other, he's rarely impressed with himself.

Even after a year like 2013 - when a spectacular wedding, a second NBA championship and a fourth MVP award were among the many highlights enjoyed by the Miami Heat star - he still is, as he puts it, striving for greatness. Or, technically, more greatness, since his enormous list of accomplishments just keeps growing.

(Tennis) Serena Williams wins 3rd AP Athlete of Year award

Serena Williams likes to make one thing clear: She is never satisfied, no matter how many matches and tournaments she wins.

Driven as ever, Williams won plenty this year. She went 78-4 with 11 titles, including at the French Open and U.S. Open, raising her Grand Slam championship total to 17. She compiled a 34-match winning streak. She earned more than $12 million in prize money, a record for women's tennis. In February, she became the oldest No. 1 in WTA rankings history and never left that perch.

(UFC-MMA) Chris Weidman ready to prove his win over Anderson Silva was no fluke

LAS VEGAS – Six months has changed little for Chris Weidman. He'll walk to the cage last and be introduced last Saturday at UFC 168 at the MGM Grand Garden, but otherwise, not much is different from every other fight he's ever had.

Weidman holds the UFC's middleweight belt, courtesy of a dramatic knockout victory of long-time champion Anderson Silva at UFC 162 in July. The public perception, though, is that Silva lost that bout, not so much that Weidman won it.
