(SEA Games) Double gold in golf for Philippines as Superal, women's team win SEA Games in style

PRINCESS Superal led the Philippines to a sweep of the women’s golf tournament on Wednesday in the 2013 Southeast Asian Games in Myanmar.

Superal shot an even-par 72 in the third round to cop the individual gold with a three-round total of 210, six strokes ahead of silver medalist Yin May Myo of Myanmar at the Royal Myanmar Golf in Nay Pyi Taw.

Tatiana Jaqueline Wijaya of Indonesia finished with the bronze after a 217.

Superal combined with Clare Amelia Legaspi and Katrina Pelen-Briones to capture the team event beating Myanmar for the gold.

Superal sizzled with a 66 in the second round on her way to the gold medal in both the individual and team events.

(SEA Games) Ulboc topples compatriot Herrera as new SEA Games steeplechase king

NAY PYI TAW -- There's a new king of steeplechase in the Southeast Asian Games, and he remains to be a Filipino.

Christopher Ulboc Jr. knocked the crown off the head of reigning champion and compatriot Rene Herrera when he won the gold medal in the men's 3000m steeplechase of the biennial meet’s 27th edition Wednesday at the Wunna Theikdi Sports Complex here.

(SEA Games) London Olympian Daniel Caluag tows brother Christopher to 1-2 finish in SEA Games BMX race

LONDON Olympian Daniel Caluag ruled the men’s BMX finals, beating his brother Christopher for the gold in the 2013 Southeast Asian Games on Thursday at the Mount Pleasant cycling field in Nay Pyi Taw.

The 24-year-old Caluag became the country’s 22nd gold medalist in the Games as he covered the 350-meter track in 31.994 seconds to win the race against his older brother Christopher Caluag, who submitted a time of 32.555.

(SEA Games) Filipina jin Jade Zafra overpowers Thai champion to clinch SEA Games gold

JADE Zafra annexed the Philippines’ 21st gold medal in the 2013 Southeast Asian Games in women’s taekwondo at the Zayar Thiri Stadim in Nay Pyi Taw.

The 23-year-old Zafra dislodged reigning titlist Thailand's Worawong Pongpanit, 7-1, in the finals of the women’s -57 kg division to clinch the country’s first gold medal on Thursday.

The UST journalism graduate and former sportswriter earlier beat Bunna Cheang of Cambodia, 15-1, and defeated Vietnam’s Thi Thanh Lam via head kick in sudden death after they tied at 9-9 at end of three rounds.

UAAP Most Valuable Player Christian Dela Cruz bagged the silver medal in the men’s -80 kg, bowing to Myanmar’s Linn Win Htun, 6-9, in finals.

Cruz defeated Vietnam’s Nguyen Van Son, 11-8, in quarterfinals and got past Laos’ Sawatvilay Phimmasone, 8-0, in the last four.

Gherson Bautista settled for the bronze in the men’s -68 kg, defeating Indonesia’s Yunaidalfred Blegur, 18-10, but losing to eventual gold winner Phouthasone Thammayong of Laos, 7-4, in the semis.

(NBA) Lakers lose Kobe Bryant again

Kobe Bryant is expected to miss six weeks with a fracture of the lateral tibial plateau in his left knee, the Los Angeles Lakers announced Thursday.

Bryant suffered the injury Tuesday night during the visiting Lakers' 96-92 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies. The Lakers said Thursday that an MRI showed the fracture.

AY PYI TAW – The vaunted taekwondo squad failed to come up with the desired finishing kick Friday as Pauline Louise Lopez and Paul Romero could only cop a bronze medal each in their respective events in the 27th Southeast Asian Games.

Lopez lost to Thanh Thao Nguyen of Vietnam, 0-4, in the women's under 53kg category, while Romero surrendered a 4-6 decision to Ryan Chong Wu Lunn of Malaysia in the men's under 63kg semifinals Friday at the Wunna Theikdi Stadium here.

(SEA Games) Grieving Ranola ends SEA Games campaign without a gold after semis loss

THE gold medal quest of a grieving Iris Ranola ended Friday after she lost in the semifinals of the women’s 10-ball competitions of the 27th Southeast Asian Games in Myanmar.

Ranola bowed to Angeline Magdalena of Indonesia, 2-7, as she closed her campaign in the biennial meet without a gold medal.

(SEA Games) Double gold Bagsit spearheads PH relay team to smashing finish

ARCHAND Christian Bagsit won a second gold medal in the 27th Southeast Asian Games in Myanmar after spearheading the PH 4x400m relay team to a smashing finish Thursday night.

Bagsit joined forces with Isidro Del Prado Jr., Edgardo Alejan, and Julius Nierras to clock three minutes, 9.32 seconds and beat Thailand (3:09.81) for the gold at the Wunna Theikdi Sports Complex.

Malaysia settled for the bronze medal (3:15.06).

Bagsit earlier won the gold in the 400m run.

"I knew that when I got into the straight, victory was already within reach," said Bagsit.

The athletics team has already won six gold medals in this year's edition of the biennial meet.

NAY PYI TAW – A world champion who would not be struck by lightning twice and a pair of judokas provided the lift Team Philippines needed Friday in its last-ditch bid to overtake an immovable rival in the 27th Southeast Asian Games here.

Rubilen Amit exacted sweet revenge on 9-ball finals tormentor Angeline Magdalena of Indonesia with an emphatic 7-2 victory to take the 10-ball gold and add on to the steamrolling victories fashioned by veteran Gilbert Ramirez and Kiyomi Watanabe from the mat.
