PR N°19 - FIBA suspends Lebanese Basketball Federation

MIES - Following the disruption of the Lebanese national championship due to political and judicial interferences, FIBA suspended the Lebanese Basketball Federation (LBF) on 11 July 2013 for serious infringement of the FIBA General Statutes and all principles under which the Olympic sports movement is founded.

After a thorough review of the situation, FIBA notes that the LBF is not properly armed to face political interferences and solve sporting disputes within its own structures. In addition, FIBA has been informed of allegations of wrongdoings and political pressure leading a number of federation officials to resign from their positions in the Management Board.

FIBA and FIBA Asia did not want to penalise athletes, technical staff, sponsors and basketball fans who have worked for so long and eagerly awaited the participation of Lebanon at the upcoming FIBA Asia Championship and possibly the FIBA Basketball World Cup. This is why FIBA offered - through a letter dated 28 June 2013 - the LBF the opportunity to solve these matters urgently. Regretfully, the Lebanese basketball family was not in the position to meet the requirements outlined and must now assume the consequences of its organisational deficiencies and actions.

Until proper structures and statutes are put into place to ensure that basic activities - such as holding of a national championship - of the national federation can be carried out smoothly, with proper regulations and without political interference, the LBF shall not be re-admitted with full rights as a member of FIBA or be allowed to participate in international basketball competitions.

FIBA and FIBA Asia remain fully committed to helping the LBF in its re-organisation process. FIBA will establish a Working group to meet with all parties, supervise the Extraordinary General Assembly and help establish a federation that functions independently and effectively, in accordance with all principles that are at the core of FIBA's General Statutes.

FIBA......

so sad for lebanon ......

Chot grateful for chance to 'scout' Kazakhstan
By Gerry Ramos
July 23, 2013, 06:17 pm

Gilas coach Chot Reyes is looking forward to the team's tune-up game against Kazakhstan as he will be able to scout them ahead of the Fiba-Asia Men's championship. Jerome Ascano

Gilas coach Chot Reyes is looking forward to the team's tune-up game against Kazakhstan as he will be able to scout them ahead of the Fiba-Asia Men's championship. Jerome Ascano

CHOT Reyes declared Gilas Pilipinas in fighting form with about a week to go before its campaign in the Fiba-Asia Men’s Championship on home soil.

“We’re about 80 to 85 percent there,” said Reyes.

The national coach hopes Gilas will finally reach its peak by the time the qualifier to next year’s World Basketball Championship gets going at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Gilas plays two more tune-up matches against a selection of PBA stars on Wednesday at the MOA Arena and the Kazakhstan national team on Friday at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

Of the two, Reyes is looking forward to the match-up with Kazakhstan, a potential opponent in the knockout quarterfinal phase of the August 1-11 tournament Manila is hosting for the first time in 40 years.

“Wala tayong ka-alam-alam sa Kazakhstan, so that game will just be for scouting," he said.

But he’s also grateful for the work out the nationals will have against the PBA selection to be coached by Franz Pumaren and bannered by the likes of former Smart Gilas stalwarts Jayvee Casio, Chris Tiu, and Mark Barroca, Arwind Santos, Jay Washington, Calvin Abueva, and Cyrus Baguio.

“The game versus the PBA All-Stars is not for any tactical or strategic workout," explained Reyes. "It is to make up for the lost tour and give the fans a treat."

              Average Height of Participating teams

MANILA, Philippines (27th FIBA Asia Championship): So who has the tallest average height among the participants in the 27th FIBA Asia Championship. The above image should provide the answers. But there are a lot more questions that can be answered only after the competition begins, and ends, at the 27th FIBA Asia Championship to be played in Manila from Aug 1-11.

China with six players standing taller than 200 cms are expectedly bring the tallest average in the competition, but will it translate to a record 16th gold?

Or Iran, with two players standing at exactly 200 cms and four taller than that, will be able to regain the gold they last won at 25th FIBA Asia Championship at Tianjin (China) in 2009, thus becoming the first team in FIBA Asia history to bag a FIBA Asia Cup-FIBA Asia Championship double?

Or hosts Philippines with only three players in the 200-cms zone be able to keep home the gold – after a gap of 27 years – in their first hosting in 40 years?

Interesting questions, but how much will height matter!

PHI - Reyes not pleased with Gilas performance despite win

MANILA, Philippines (27th FIBA Asia Championship): Coach Chot Reyes of the Philippine National Team was livid on Wednesday night. His team won 99-87 (Box scores) in the friendly scrimmage against a PBA All-Stars selection at the Mall of Asia, the venue for the 27th FIBA Asia Championship to be played in Manila from Aug 1-11, but Reyes was far from impressed with the way his team played.

“With one week to go before FIBA Asia there’s absolutely no excuse for the way we played in the first half. It was a terrible, terrible game,” said Reyes.

“If we were up against Chinese Taipei or Jordan, we would have been down 20 at the half,” the coach added.

“I thought we were making good progress in practice,” Reyes said.

Having gone three quarters in a disappointingly somnambulistic manner, the Philippine National Team did rather well in the clutch period to win their first game in front of the home fans. Ranidel De Ocampo led the scoring with 16 points and Gary David had 14 points.

Marcus Douthit was confined to only about 15 minutes of play during which the naturalized center produced 11 points and 5 rebounds.

“After New Zealand I thought we were in the 80 to 85 (percent) level but we took a huge step backward with tonight’s performance.”

“You can probably chalk it up to them being too tired or too excited since this is their first game on home soil since June. Maybe they’re too excited, too careful playing against their former teammates. Let’s see Friday if it gets any better.”

Philippines will play their final tune-up against the Kazakhstan National Team at the same venue on Friday.

“I hope it’s different Friday,” said Reyes. “It’s only two ways. Either this will get them down or this will get them fired up for Friday. I’m banking on the latter.”

Philippines as hosts have used their right of choice opting to play in Group A of the Prelim Round competition against Jordan, Chinese Taipei and Saudi Arabia. Philippines open their campaign with a game against Saudi Arabia. Complete schedule of the 27th FIBA Asia Championship.

Castro responds to Chot tirade with masterful showing in Gilas win over Kazakhs By Reuben Terrado

SINGLED out by coach Chot Reyes a few days ago for his listless showing, Jason Castro bounced back strong behind a 20-point explosion before going down with an ankle sprain late in a 92-89 Gilas Pilipinas win over Kazakhstan in their exhibition match on Friday at the Smar-Araneta Coliseum.

Jeff Chan also had 20 points for Gilas, including a back-breaking three-pointer off a turnover after Jimmy Alapag hit the go-ahead free throws that allowed the nationals to finish strong against the hard-fighting and highly-physical Kazakhs side in their final tune-up match for the Fiba-Asia championships.

The morale-boosting victory, however, came at a price due to the injury suffered by Castro who went down hard after being fouled in the final 1:36 of the tightly-fought game and spraining his right ankle in the process.

The point guard out of Philippine Christian College was in pain, but went to the bench on his own.

Alapag took over from Castro hitting two charities that gave Gilas the lead, 88-87.

The Nationals then forced a turnover at the other end, leading to the huge Chan triple for a three-point Gilas cushion.

Reyes now hopes Castro’s injury won’t be serious with the Fiba-Asia Men’s Championship just days away.

Castro wasn’t the only casualty for Gilas as Ranidel De Ocampo also sprained his right ankle during the final tune-up game for the Nationals in their build-up for the qualifier of the World Basketball Championship.

“Kapag pumupukpok tayo, they will be prone to injury. We are hoping that their injury isn’t serious. Hopefully, tomorrow we will find out,” said Reyes.

After criticizing the pint-sized Castro for his subpar play against the PBA All-Stars in a 99-87 win during their tune-up Wednesday night, the national head coach was all praises for the the Talk `N Text guard this time around.

“He was the best player out there,” said Reyes of Castro.

Gilas led most of the way, but Kazakhstan ended the first half leading, 53-51, after Anton Ponomarev hit four triples.

Alapag converted a rare four-point play to give the lead back to the Philippines in the third period, 70-68, before taking a 76-70 edge entering the fourth.

But Kazakhstan continued to stalk Gilas as Rustem Murzagaliyev hit a fade-away to give the visitors an 86-84 lead.

The challenge didn’t surprised Reyes, who admitted his coaching staff avoided Kazakhstan during the draw.

“In my books, talagang one of the strongest teams ang Kazakhstan. We always have a hard time against them. That is why iniwasan natin ‘yan sa grouping,” said Reyes.

After a two-game sweep of its tune-up matches, Gilas now looks forward to the real battle ahead as the Fiba-Asia meet is set to comes off the wraps on August 1 at the Mall of Asia Arena.

The scores:

Philippines (92) – Castro 20, Chan 20, Fonacier 14, Alapag 12, Douthit 9, Tenorio 5, Fajardo 5, Aguilar 5, David 2, Norwood 0, Pingris 0, Belga 0, De Ocampo 0.

Kazakhstan (89) – Johnson 17, Ponomarev 16, Klimov 13, Murzagaliyev 12, Yevstigneyev M. 9, Dvirnyy 7, Zhigulin 7, Bondarvoich 6, Yargaliyev 2, Sultanov 0, Yevstigneyev V. 0.

Quarterscores: 26-22; 51-53; 76-70; 92-89.

Small ball, twin towers, etc: Gilas Pilipinas coach Chot Reyes plays with lineups in final tuneup
InterAKTV · Friday, July 26, 2013 · 9:51 pm

PBA/Nuki Sabio

With less than a week to go before the FIBA Asia Championship, Philippine national men’s basketball coach Chot Reyes is keeping his cards close to his chest.

He piloted the Gilas Pilipinas national squad to a 92-89 victory on Friday against a tall and athletic Kazakhstan side, but fiddled around with his lineups to keep other teams from gauging the full strength of his team.

“Kailangan mayroon pa rin tayong tinatago,” said Reyes.

He played around with the minutes of his men, never letting anyone spend too much time on the floor. Jayson Castro, his best performer for the evening, scored 20 points but saw just 18 minutes of playing time.

Reyes also fielded in unconventional lineups, especially in the second half as the game remained close. In the third quarter, he took out all of his centers, instead fielding in three power forwards — Ranidel De Ocampo, Marc Pingris, and Japeth Aguilar — to form his frontline.

Late in the period, Reyes also played around with going extremely small, playing point guards Castro and Alapag together. That resulted in good things for the Philippine team, which went on a 12-2 run to close the third quarter, with the two Talk ‘N Text guards scoring all of the Philippines’ points during that stretch.

In the fourth period, Reyes took out all his point guards, going big in the backcourt with the 6-foot-5 Gabe Norwood taking the primary ballhandler duties while flanked by Gary David and Larry Fonacier. Late in the game, Reyes also experimented with a twin tower combination featuring Marcus Douthit and June Mar Fajardo, to less successful results.

Showing just how willing the coach was to play around with the lineups, Reyes fielded in Beau Belga late in the game, after fans began chanting the burly center’s name — even though the game was still in the balance. Belga set a couple of hard picks on Kazakhstan opponents, to the delight of Filipino fans at the Big Dome.

Reyes expressed confidence about the team as it gears up for the FIBA Asia Championship.

“We’ll take Sunday off, that’s going to be our last break before FIBA Asia,” said Reyes. “From hereon in its mostly mental.”

De Ocampo advises to just rest as sprained ankle not serious enough
By Richard Dy

GILAS Pilipinas can heave a sigh of relief as Ranidel De Ocampo’s ankle injury doesn’t seem as bad as it looked Friday night.

The national team big man said he has been medically advised to refrain from any basketball-related activities for the next three days to make sure he recovers fast in time for the opening of the Fiba-Asia Men’s Championship on August 1.

De Ocampo suffered an ankle injury Friday night during the national team’s 92-89 win over Kazakhstan in their friendly match at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

He said after the game he had a hard time running the floor as he felt pain in his ankle.

It turned out the injury was not as serious as initially diagnosed.

“Di na kailangang mag-alala. Pahinga lang daw ako ng three days, so aabot pa naman sa (Fiba-Asia men’s championships) opening,” the 6-foot-5 De Ocampo told Spin.ph shortly after his check up with Dr. Isagani Leal, a rehabilitation medicine specialist at his clinic in West Ave., Quezon City Saturday.

De Ocampo said he spent several hours icing his right ankle shortly after the game to avoid swelling, before meeting up with Dr. Leal for the check up.

“May nakitang magang joint sa paa ko sa ultrasound. Buti na lang pahinga lang. Kasi di ko tinigilang mag-yelo para di masyadong mamaga,” added the 31-year-old native of Tanza, Cavite.

The forward out of St. Francis of Assissi College said he’ll still show up in Gilas’ practices at the Mall of Asia Arena as a show of support for the team.

But in order to keep himself in shape, he will also do other workouts that won’t entail the use of his feet.

“Mag-work out din lang ako para lang di tuluyang mawala sa shape. Siyempre, ganun talaga, basketball iyan, di naman maiwasan `yung physical na laro,” he said.

“Handa lang dapat masaktan, kasi sa Asia, kadalasan, kung sino `yung physical maglaro, `yun ang nakakakuha ng panalo,” added De Ocampo, noted for his outside shooting and strong physical inside presence.

Aside from de Ocampo, guard and Talk `N Text teammate Jason Castro also sprained his ankle, although he said the injury doesn’t appear to be serious just moments after the scrimmage with the Kazakhs, which the nationals won, 92-89.
