Gilas shelves Vegas trip, eyes New Zealand tiff instead
By Nelson Beltran (philstar.com) | Updated June 20, 2013 - 9:08pm

MANILA, Philippines – Gilas Pilipinas has ditched its Las Vegas trip for a New Zealand odyssey where it is guaranteed of at least six competitive games topped by a match against the tough New Zealand national team in the closing stage of its buildup for the 27th FIBA Asia Championship in Manila in August.

“We’ve disengaged from Vegas because we can’t set up match against teams playing in the NBA summer league by the first week of July,” Gilas coach Chot Reyes told The STAR.

“We can get games there a little later but we can’t wait. In New Zealand, we’re assured of a game against the New Zealand national team. So our leaning now is to go to New Zealand,” Reyes also said.
A planned side trip to Australia was also canceled to avoid booking problems.

“Mahihirapan pa kung dalawang visa ang aayusin and so we decided to just concentrate on New Zealand,” said Reyes of their New Zealand swing serving as the last stage of their preparation for the Asian meet slated Aug. 1-11 at the MOA Arena in Pasay City and the Ninoy Aquino Stadium in Manila.

In New Zealand, Gilas Pilipinas plays the New Zealand national team and at least four tough teams in the New Zealand pro league.

Sportshub ( Article MRec ), pagematch: 1, sectionmatch: 1 “One team we’re playing is the Wellington Saints featuring four members of the national team,” said Reyes.

New Zealand is a leading force in Oceania basketball, having qualified in the Olympics twice and in the FIBA world championship thrice.

It created a big stir in the 2002 world meet in Indianapolis where it finished fourth place. In the last world joust in Turkey, the Kiwis were 12th out of 24 competitors.

Kazakhstan to test Gilas mettle in early Manila tune-up
By Nelson Beltran (philstar.com)
Updated June 21, 2013 - 4:41pm
http://www.philstar.com/sports/2013/...ly-manila-tune

MANILA, Philippines – Gilas Pilipinas has got an additional tune-up match to boost its buildup for the 27th FIBA Asia Championship with Kazakhstan agreeing to come early and play the Philippine team in a warm-up tiff on July 26 either at the MOA Arena or at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

It’s an interesting game considering Gilas Pilipinas and Kazakhstan are potential rivals in the quarterfinal round of the Asian world qualifier slated Aug. 1-11 at the MOA Arena in Pasay and at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium in Manila.

Three days before its Kazakh game, Gilas Pilipinas tangles with a PBA selection also either at MOA or at the Big Dome.

Cancelled is Gilas’ “Luz-Vi-Min” series with the PBA All Stars as Gilas officials needed to adjust the team’s training schedule fitted with the Gilas trip to New Zealand on July 8-18.

“Schedule, playing venue and everything with regards Gilas’ exhibition games versus the PBA All Stars and Kazakhstan will be finalized in a meeting Monday,” PBA media bureau chief Willie Marcial told The STAR.

Originally, Gilas was to play a Franz Pumaren-coached PBA selection in a three-game series in Davao, Cebu and Manila in the closing stage of Team Philippines’ preparation for the Asian joust.

This series was dropped from Gilas’ itinerary as Gilas officials junked a supposed Las Vegas journey in favor of a trip to New Zealand.

A welcome addition in Gilas’ calendar of activities is the tune-up versus the Kazakhs, five days before the opening of the FIBA Asia event.

Should Gilas top its bracket (Groups A and B), it’s likely to meet Kazakhstan in the opener of the knockout stage.

The Kazakhs are tipped to finish fourth behind the Chinese, the Iranians and the Koreans in their own bracket (Groups C and D).

A tall team with decent outside gunners, Kazakhstan is the No. 1 team from Central Asia which once finished third in the Asian Games and fourth in FIBA Asia Championship.

The Philippines beat Kazakhstan for bronze medal in the 1998 Bangkok Asiad but the Kazakhs got back at the Filipinos, also in the fight for bronze, in the next Asiad in Busan.

In 2007, the Kazakhs made it two in a row versus the Filipinos, beating the Phl team in their Jones Cup meeting in Taipei.

In the succeeding FIBA Asia tourney in Tokushima, Japan, the Philippines failed to make it past the preliminary round while Kazakhstan went all the way to the semifinals.

The Kazakhs, however, dropped to ninth in 2009 in Tianjin and didn’t compete in Wuhan in 2011.

Gilas to play national team, pro clubs in 10-day New Zealand training camp
InterAKTV · Monday, July 1, 2013 · 11:34 pm

The Philippine national men’s basketball team is set to undergo a 10-day training camp in New Zealand as part of their preparations for their FIBA Asia Championship campaign.

The same group of players who went to the Lithuania camp will depart on July 9, Tuesday, for the New Zealand trip.

The SMART-Gilas Pilipinas players will then buckle down for training the very next day at Napier, New Zealand, where they will have a five-day training camp with former New Zealand national team coach Tab Baldwin, who also helmed the national teams of Lebanon and Jordan.

The camp will be highlighted by games against NBL teams on July 12, 13 and 14.

“It will be a tiring camp for the team. In the days where there will be no games, we will have twice a day practice. For the game days, it will be practice in the morning, game in the evening,” coach Chot Reyes said during the team’s practice Monday evening.

The team will then travel to Wellington on July 15 and play games against other NBL teams on the 16th and 17th.

They will then proceed to Auckland on July 17 and battle the New Zealand national team, nicknamed the Tall Blacks, a day after.

The team returns home to the country on July 19.

PHI - Norwood back in training after quick honeymoon as Gilas prepare to tour NZ

MANILA, Philippines (27th FIBA Asia Championship): Spearhead Gabe Norwood resumed training with the Gilas Pilipinas this past weekend after a quick honeymoon in Hawaii as the Philippine National Team, preparing to host the 27th FIBA Asia Championship to be played in Manila from Aug 1-11 prepared to leave for a tour of New Zealand.

Philippines are scheduled to tour New Zealand for a 10-day training camp, which also includes games against local clubs and the New Zealand National Team Tall Blacks.

The team is also scheduled to spend five days for training under the legendary Tab Baldwin, who had helmed Jordan to the silver medal at the 26th FIBA Asia Championship at Wuhan (China) in 2011.

“It will be a tiring camp for the team. In the days where there will be no games, we will have twice a day practice. For the game days, it will be practice in the morning, game in the evening,” coach Chot Reyes said.

The enthusiasm shown by Norwood to rejoin the camp almost immediately after his wedding underlined the enthusiasm in the Philippine team.

“The most important thing that has happened to this squad is everyone respects one another. Everyone respects each other’s game, not only our strengths, but our weaknesses. We help out each other to cover up those weaknesses,” Norwood said.

“The important thing is not about us being ready now, but being ready in August,” added Norwood. “But the team keeps on improving every day.”

Philippines have chosen to play along side Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Chinese Taipei in Group A of the Prelim Round competition at the 27th FIBA Asia Championship. The hosts begin their campaign with a game against Saudi Arabia. Complete schedule of the 27th FIBA Asia Championship.
