Up Close On Coco Chanel

So great is Coco Chanel's legacy that fans make pilgrimages to her Paris apartment (although she also lived in the Paris Ritz for 30 years), which is preserved as she left it and endlessly referenced for style - as is every image of her and every tiny thing she ever designed. From her use of monochrome to her oversized 'costume' pearls and cuffs, everything is still sublimely, continuously referenced. As she herself once said: "Fashion fades, only style remains the same."

AS much as she was known for her philanthropy, kindness and the scandal that surrounded her marriage, Diana, Princess of Wales, was also known for her unerring sense of style that influenced a generation of women. 

From her early days in the limelight as a shy and blushing nursery school teacher, and afternoons spent at the polo, to figure-skimming dresses by Versace and Catherine Walker - we remember the style of a true fashion icon.






Born, on 1968 to Viscount and Viscountess Of Althorp... Diana never had any clue that she will become Europe's most elegant and controversial Princess... sweetly timid as her close family and friends would describe her... she was , in her nature a reluctant beauty that was too tall to dance the ballet.... too articulate to be the pretty damsel unlike her sister, and too softhearted to be brought into public for such a prestigious task....becoming a Princess... but she did.... and somehow in her own simple ways... Lady Diana...captivated not only the royalties but also the whole world.





At the beginning of her marriage, Diana allowed the royal advisers to choose her clothing. Therefore, she was sometimes dressed in a rather old-fashioned way. But as time was passing, Diana found her own style. She also changed her hairstyle very frequently. Millions of women drove their hairdressers crazy because they always wanted to have the same hairstyle as Diana had. Diana became an idol for many women. Independent of whether she was wearing, narrow, figure-hugging cocktail dresses, suits whose skirts often ended above the knee or her narrow sports trousers: Diana had become England’s great fashion icon. Following the style of the princess, many women discovered soft fabrics, such as satin and lace. Diana combined young fashion with royal glamour. Apart from that, Diana was wearing hats. Even before that, all ladies had used to wear hats to special events, but Diana brought a fresh style to hat wear. Even when sometimes dressed casual in private, Diana always represented the fairy tale princess.

A TRUE silver screen icon, Audrey Hepburn's elegant style and elfin beauty are synonymous with 20th Century Hollywood glamour.

Born in Belgium in 1929, Hepburn came to the world's attention with a breakout role inRoman Holiday for which she won the 1954 Best Actress Oscar. Her career moved fast and her next film Sabrina not only cemented her status as one of Tinseltown's finest, but introduced her to the designer to whom she would become muse - Hubert de Givenchy.

Givenchy  went on to design the actress' personal ensembles, as well as those made famous by her in timeless films such as Funny Face and Breakfast at Tiffany's. She later said, "His are the only clothes in which I am myself. He is far more than a couturier, he is a creator of personality."

In 2006, the little black Givenchy dress famously featured in Breakfast at Tiffany's was sold for £467,200 - the highest price paid for a dress from a film and a sign of Hepburn's lasting legacy as a style icon.

Style icons can teach us about lasting style. Especially interesting are those style icons whose style lasts forever and is still talked about. One of those style icons is Catherine Hepburn.


Why was Catherine Hepburn a style icon?

Many women that become style icons, change things or do something different. Catherine Hepburn was such a person. She started to wear men’s trousers at a time when it was very uncommon to do so. She was extremely persistent on doing so and insisted on wearing trousers both on and off set. This was certainly not a popular choice in her time and she alienated part of her audience for doing so, even gaining the nickname “box office poison”. In time though she became very popular again as people started to admire her for her fearlessness.



Katharine Hepburn is a true style icon who contributed towards making trousers fashionable and acceptable to women. She was often imitated and to this day, the men’s wear trend and wide legged pants and shirts are attributed to her.  In 1986 she was awarded a lifetime achievement award by the Council of Fashion Designers of America in recognition of the influence she played in women’s fashion.

The wide legged pants and the men’s look are back in trend right now and I find the combination of these pants with a nice plain shirt enormously chic. Just look how stylish and chic she looks when older, in all the images featured here.

Katharine Hepburn, the woman



Her confidence and persona also contributes to her style. I believe she was a remarkable woman and just love some of her quotes:
