Gallant Gilas Pilipinas falls short in Olympic dream, yields to mighty China in FIBA Asia final

The Philippine national men’s basketball team put up a gallant fight but China was just too much overcome as the hosts pulled out a 78-67 victory to capture the 2015 FIBA Asia Championship gold medal Saturday at College of Social Work Dayun in Changsha, China.

Naturalized player Andray Blatche top-scored for Gilas Pilipinas with 17 points and five boards, but he never found his groove against the Chinese defense.

Jayson Castro, brilliant all tournament long, also had a hard time on the offensive end, finishing with eight points while only shooting three out of 14 baskets from the field.

With the loss, the Filipinos missed out on their chance to book an automatic berth in the 2016 Rio Olympics as China claimed the right to be Asia’s representative in the prestigious stage.

The Filipinos got off to a 5-0 start as they were able to keep a five-point lead until China, sparked by its rowdy hometown crowd, came alive.

The Chinese launched a 12-0 bomb to take a 22-15 lead. Gilas Pilipinas was able to trim it to just four, 23-19 after the opening quarter.

But the Filipinos struggled to get their game going against the much taller Chinese, with Jayson Castro and Andray Blatche being defended well.

China went on to grab a 13-point lead, 46-33, its biggest lead in the first half, as the Filipinos, despite standing their ground on defense, kept on giving up fouls.

As the Filipinos continued their shooting woes, China expanded its lead to as big as 16, 60-44, after a Li Gen triple.

But Gilas Pilipinas became aggressive in the dying seconds of the third frame, with Calvin Abueva, despite missing free throws, providing the energy for the squad. The Filipinos were somehow just down by 10, 60-50, entering the final frame.

However, China started the fourth period with five straight points to build a commanding 65-50 lead that kept the Filipinos at bay.

Road to Rio now tougher as Gilas tries to keep Olympic dream alive in next year’s wildcard tourney

The Philippine national men’s basketball team fell short of earning an automatic ticket to the 2016 Rio Olympics after losing to China in the 2015 FIBA Asia Championship final on Saturday in Changsha, China.

But Gilas Pilipinas’ Olympic dream is still alive, although the squad faces a more difficult road to bring the country back to its first Olympic appearance in 44 years.

By finishing in the top four alone in the FIBA Asia, Gilas Pilipinas already booked a ticket to the 2016 FIBA World Olympic Qualifying Tournament where three wildcard spots in the Olympic games are at stake.

Apart from FIBA Asia runners-up Iran and Japan, Gilas Pilipinas will be joining the field that is already composed of European squads France, Serbia, Greece, Italy and Czech Republic; Canada, Mexico and Puerto Rico from the Americas; New Zealand from Oceania and three hosts that are yet to be determined.

In the wildcard tournament slated in July next year, the 18 teams will be divided into three groups, each having a tournament of its own. The winning team from each bracket will book the remaining spots in the Olympics.

The competition will definitely be far tougher, no doubt, but by that time, the Filipino fans are hoping that Gilas Pilipinas will give a tough fight with the expected addition of Fil-Am NBA player Jordan Clarkson from the Los Angeles Lakers.

Gilas Pilipinas’ Jayson Castro makes it to FIBA Asia Mythical Team anew

Philippine national men’s basketball team star guard Jayson Castro maintained his title as one of the best players in the continent after being named to the all-star team of the 2015 FIBA Asia Championship Saturday in Changsha, China.

Castro, the main driving force of Gilas Pilipinas, was included to the Mythical Team for the second straight time after also earning the accolade in the 2013 edition of the tournament held in Manila.

Joining Castro are Iran’s Samad Nikkhah Bahrami and three Chinese players in Guo Ailun, Zhou Qi and Yi Jianlian who was hailed as the tournament MVP.

Castro was brilliant all tournament long for Gilas Pilipinas which captured the silver medal after bowing to China in the final.

Gilas might not participate in Olympic wildcard qualifiers, says MVP: ‘We should plan ahead to 2017’

CHANGSHA – With their runner-up finish in the 2015 FIBA Asia Championship, the Philippine national men’s basketball team will have one of the three spots allotted for the Asian region in the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament next year.

But Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) president Manuel V. Pangilinan believes that there is not much to gain from participating in the tournament and that the Gilas Pilipinas program should instead look ahead to the future.

“My view is that, I’m not saying we will get chosen for the wild card, but frankly my view is that we should opt out of it,” Pangilinan told InterAksyon.com in an interview.

“And plan further ahead towards 2017 when the pre-qualification games are started to get played for the 2019 World Cup. We should prepare better for that.”

He believes that China benefited greatly from long-term preparation, culminating in their return to Asian supremacy this year.

“Remember in 2013, the Chinese team was very different from the Chinese team today. They didn’t even make it to the quarters, if I recall correctly. The Chinese team we saw today was vastly improved from where it was only about two years ago. We should think the same way as they do. Prepare forward,” he said.

China fell to Chinese Taipei in the quarterfinal round of the previous FIBA Asia Championship in Manila but dominated this year’s competition – including defending champion Iran – with a young, athletic team this year.

“That’s now the gold standard for Asian basketball. It’s no longer Iran. It’s now the Chinese, this Chinese team.”

But Pangilinan stressed that, despite the rise of the China as the Asian superpower, people should continue believing in the bright future for Philippine basketball.

“I don’t think we should lose hope. It’s a sport that Filipinos love so it’s a sport we’ll continue to support. We shouldn’t take this as a complete setback to the program. We should look at the positive aspects of the program and the things that need to be improved.”

Tab Baldwin calls coaching Gilas his dream job: ‘I finally found people that love the game as much as I do’

After steering the Philippine national men’s basketball team to silver medal finish in the 2015 FIBA Asia Championship in Changsha, China this weekend, Gilas Pilipinas coach Tab Baldwin admitted that he may have found a place where he feels he belongs.

“It’s confirmed, this is my dream job,” Baldwin told Lyn Olvario of News5 in an interview at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport on Monday.

“Working for the Filipino people. I finally found people that love the game as much as I do and it’s very evident to me. And honestly I didn’t think I would ever find that but I found it en masse. I’ve got some real competition in terms of loving the game of basketball. And I fit. I fit here, I think.”

Baldwin isn’t yet sure what the future has in store for him – but he is hoping that he remains part of the team that he has grown very fond of.

“I don’t know. The next steps are to sit down with the powers that be and make some decisions about what direction we’re going to go, what we’re going to do, who we’re going to do it with and, God-willing, I’ll be involved,” he said.

And while he is enjoying his time as part of Philippine basketball, he understands that there are certain expectations that come with his position.

“I know I have to perform in that job. I’ll be determined to do that and hopefully the conditions in which I work with the guys that I work with will be the optimal conditions.”

‘THIS IS WHAT WE’VE BEEN WAITING FOR’: After PBA expresses support, Vargas says MVP willing to commit to Gilas stint to Olympic qualifiers

Moments after learning of the PBA Board’s resolution – signed by every member of the league – to lend its best players for the 2016 FIBA World Olympic Qualifying Tournament, outgoing Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) vice chairman Ricky Vargas has committed the support of SBP president Manuel V. Pangilinan for the PBA-backed Philippine national men’s basketball team.

“This is what we’ve been waiting for. Salamat PBA and its team owners. We now move forward for our country. Cheers,” Vargas wrote in a text message to InterAksyon.com.

Pangilinan, the chief backer of the Gilas Pilipinas national and outgoing president of the sport’s governing body in the Philippines, had earlier said that he was willing to send the national team to the Olympic qualifiers only if the PBA could commit to form a stronger team than the one that competed in the recent 2015 FIBA Asia Championship.

The telecommunications magnate even proclaimed that he was willing to bid for the hosting of the event if the league could give its full support.

It seems like Pangilinan’s wish will be granted after the league released 17 of its best players to the national pool following a meeting on Wednesday.

Part of the pool are the PBA’s premier big men, two-time MVP June Mar Fajardo of San Miguel and Greg Slaughter of Barangay Ginebra, both of whom were not part of the recent Gilas team’s stint in the continental championship.

Also on the list are Japeth Aguilar and LA Tenorio of Ginebra; Marcio Lassiter of San Miguel; Paul Lee, Jeff Chan and Gabe Norwood of Rain or Shine; Jayson Castro, Matt Ganuelas-Rosser, Troy Rosario, Ranidel De Ocampo and Ryan Reyes of Talk ‘N Text; Marc Pingris and Ian Sangalang of Star; Calvin Abueva of Alaska and Terrence Romeo of GlobalPort.

Coaching the team is Tab Baldwin, who steered the squad to a silver medal finish in the FIBA Asia Championship in Changsha, China.

Vargas believes that because of the all-out support given by he PBA, Pangilinan will hold true to his promise of continuing to support the team.

“With all his passion and resources (he will support). Para sa bayan,” added Vargas.

To make way for the national team’s preparation leading to the Olympic qualifying tournament, the league also agreed to move its season-ending Governors’ Cup.

The Governors’ Cup will begin after the conclusion of the Olympic qualifers.

Only the FIBA Asia champions, China, has earned automatic qualification to the Olympics but the Philippines earned one of three spots to the qualifying events.

The Philippine national men’s basketball team will be wearing these kits in their quest to clinch a ticket to the 2016 Rio Olympics during the Manila Qualifying Tournament slated this July.

The most noticeable difference in this new Gilas Pilipinas uniform is the new color of the jersey number and “Pilipinas” text in front.

Also, the new jerseys also have a cool feature: according to kicksonfire.com, the name and number on the uniforms “will actually appear and disappear based on how the light bends respective to the athlete.”

The new Gilas Pilipinas kit was unveiled along with other national team jerseys during the Nike Innovation Summit in New York this week.

Gilas coach Baldwin believes Slaughter will see Fajardo-like development with international experience
Rey Joble, InterAksyon.com · Friday, March 18, 2016 · 2:55 pm

When June Mar Fajardo first joined the Philippine national men’s basketball program, the 6-foot-10 center was only just scratching the surface of his potential.

Since then, he has become the country’s most dominant player, winning two consecutive PBA MVP awards while helping lead his San Miguel team to three championships in the past four conferences.

Now that Greg Slaughter, Fajardo’s long-time rival in the collegiate ranks, is joining the team as well, basketball fans are hoping for a similar kind of leap for the 7-footer.

“Wait until the Olympic qualifier and I think he will be, but he’s part of the team. He gets out there and works in the games. I think Greg is an intelligent guy. He will learn,” Gilas Pilipinas coach Tab Baldwin told InterAksyon.com in an interview.

Baldwin believes that Slaughter, who has had little trouble imposing his will against smaller opposition in the Philippines, will need to think out of the box if he is to fulfill his potential.

“He has to learn to play the game less like a real big man and more like a basketball player. In the Philippines, you’ll get away when being real big. You are real big because that’s enough. He’s got very good skills. He could score,” Baldwin said.

“But on the next level, he’s going to find out speed, quickness, are gonna be against him. He’ll have to figure out ways to get to his skillset when he’s got super talented, super quick, super long defensive players in front of him.”

Baldwin, who came in as a consultant for the Gilas program three years ago, has seen the development of Fajardo and the American-Kiwi coach would not be surprised to see Slaughter make his own strides.

“That’s what June Mar has taken steps to learn. I think Greg will do the same,” added Baldwin.

Gilas coaches now starting to scout Manila Olympic Qualifier rivals France, New Zealand
Rey Joble, InterAksyon.com · Wednesday, March 23, 2016 · 7:29 pm

The FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Manila may still be four months away but the Philippine national men’s basketball team coaching staff have begun doing its homework of scouting Gilas Pilipinas’ heavyweight opposition.

Head coach Tab Baldwin said he and his assistants have already started studying the games of Tony Parker-led France and FIBA Oceania runner-up New Zealand, teams which they will face in Group B of the competition.

“(Assistant) coach Josh (Reyes) put in my pocket France’s 2015 Euro Basket games and our game in France in 2014. So these are the things we’ll start to get into a little bit more deeply. I love it,” Baldwin told sportswriters.

“It’s gonna give me a chance to sit down and watch my opponents and become intimate with my opponent and that’s what I want to do. Then I can help the players better to prepare themselves to those games.”

France is expected to come to Manila parading its lineup loaded with NBA players. Aside from Parker, members of the squad include Nicolas Batum of the Charlotte Hornets, Joffrey Lauvergne of the Denver Nuggets, Evan Fournier of the Orlando Magic, Rudy Gobert of the Utah Jazz and Boris Diaw, Parker’s teammate at the San Antonio Spurs.

‘I know most of these guys’

Unlike France, New Zealand won’t be having any NBA player after Oklahoma City Thunder center Steven Adams begged off. He cited his commitment with his NBA team, contending for a title, as his reason to skip national team duty.

Baldwin, himself a former long-time coach of the Tall Blacks, said the absence of Adams is a big blow for New Zealand.

“I’ve seen the first comment in the New Zealand media that has become a little bit critical of that, the reason why only Steven knows that. He’s been the best rim protector of the squad,” said Baldwin who reiterated that the squad still has many weapons.

“They will play the style of basketball they’ve been playing for the last few years, which is a lot of activity, a lot of movement, a lot of speed. Much more perimeter oriented with the likes of Corey Webster. It changes the way of our preparation for them.”

Despite his familiarity with New Zealand basketball, Baldwin said that there are still many things he has to know about the Tall Blacks.

“I need to do a lot of work there as well (New Zealand). I know most of the guys, I know the coaches very well. But I have to see their games, see their style of play and see how the players have developed the last couple of years when I haven’t seen them. So, there’s plenty of work to do, but there are lots of time for that,” he added.

The Olympic qualifying tournament will be a tough competition for Gilas Pilipinas national team as the country tries to make its way back to the Olympics for the first time since 1972.

Still, Baldwin likes the team’s chances.

“We have a fighter’s chance. We’re in the ring. It was hard to get there. We’re happy to get there,” Baldwin said.

“We don’t think for one second that this is France’s tournament or Turkey’s tournament or Canada’s tournament. They’ve got to get through us, around us, over us, or something. They’re gonna have to do one of those and we’re not gonna move out of the way. We’re not gonna stand in front of them to lose. When that time comes, we’ll take our chance and play as hard as we can.”

Gilas has target date for Andray Blatche’s return: May 15 the latest, says team manager Butch Antonio
Rey Joble, InterAksyon.com · Tuesday, March 29, 2016 · 3:07 am

FIBA photo

With only minor details to be ironed out in his latest deal, naturalized player Andray Blatche is expected to re-join the Philippine national men’s basketball team in the not-so-distant future, with a target date already set.

Gilas Pilipinas team manager Butch Antonio confirmed this development during Monday’s training at the Meralco gym.

“Right now, the latest that we’re looking at is May 15,” Antonio told sportswriters. “That’s based on our initial discussion with Coach Tab (Baldwin). But that can change and Andray knows that.”

“Kasi May 20 is the last day of the PBA and May 15 is a good cut-off. He’ll be here before the whole team is complete.”

Blatche, who helped lead Gilas to a runner-up finish in the 2015 FIBA Asia Championship, will be coming off a stint in China and, according to Antonio, his camp is close to agreeing to terms on the new contract for the former Brooklyn Nets center, who inked the richest deal in the history of the Chinese Basketball Association.

“Everything seems positive naman. We’ve been negotiating, going back and forth the past week. All I know, for sure, is Andray wants to play. His handlers were here last week and we spoke with them on the final deal,” said Antonio.

“I hope the document will be sent kahit via email tonight or tomorrow. They just have to work on some things on their end, amongst themselves. But as far as Gilas is concerned I think 99-percent or 99.9. Andyan na yan.”

Antonio didn’t divulge the exact details of the contract but revealed that one of the conditions would be to make sure Blatche joins the team in top condition.

“That’s also a concern we put on the table. They know about it,” said Antonio, who was given assurance that Blatche will come here in shape as opposed to last year where he came in 40 pounds overweight and needed to take drastic measures just to trim down.

This time, Blatche’s handlers intend to hire a trainer in the United States to make sure he comes in better shape.

“They said they want to get a trainer as early as possible to work with him. Andray knows there were questions to the state of his physical condition the last time he was here,” added Antonio.
