Day 1 Recap and Highlights

The first day of the 2014 FIBA World Cup began on Saturday with a 12-game schedule filled with intriguing matchups. With four groups packed with elite talent, the on-court action has not disappointed basketball fans thus far.

The best game of the day was the battle between Croatia and the Philippines. Led by the eight points and 11 rebounds from Ante Tomic and the 26 points from Bojan Bogdanovic, the Croatians were able to hold on to a hard-fought 81-78 victory.

Despite coming out on the losing end with the Philippines, NBA veteran Andray Blatche dominated his competition by racking up 28 points and 12 rebounds.

Another exciting matchup on the docket Saturday was the battle between the Ukraine and the Dominican Republic. Francisco Garcia put in a great effort for the Dominican team (18 points, four assists and three rebounds), but it wasn’t enough to hold off Ukraine, who won, 72-62.

Slava Kravtsov stole the show for the Ukrainians, scoring 13 points and adding seven rebounds as well.

One game that stunned many fans was Turkey vs. New Zealand. Turkey took the 76-73 win in a defensive struggle that featured just one player from each team scoring in double digits. Turkey’s Oguz Savas scored 16 points and Corey Webster scored 22 points in the loss for New Zealand.

The Chicago Bulls are hoping Pau Gasol brings the same level of play to the 2014-15 season that he displayed in Spain's win over Iran on Saturday. Gasol went for 33 points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots.

The game itself wasn't even close. Spain harassed Iranian center Hamed Haddadi into seven turnovers and frustrated their opponents on a whole.

Spain's main opposition in the World Cup figures to come from Team USA. In the game almost everyone came to see, the Americans made easy work of Finland winning 114-55. Anthony Davis and Klay Thompson led a balanced attack for Team USA.

Davis finished with 17 points and four rebounds while Thompson poured in 18 on the strength of 4-for-4 shooting from three-point range.

Defense and rebounding were the keys to success for Team USA. It held Finland to 27.7 percent shooting from the field and out-rebounded the Finnish 46-31. We'll see if both Spain and Team USA can continue to look like the teams to beat.

With two weeks of action in store for basketball fans, the on-court competition thus far at the 2014 FIBA World Cups has lived up to the expectations.

MANILA, Philippines – Another game, another hard-fought loss

The Philippine national men’s basketball team succumbed against the tough Greece, 82-70, and fell to a 0-2 win-loss record on Monday, September 1 in the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup in Seville, Spain.

The FIBA-ranked 5th Greece dominated from start to finish and weathered every attempt by Gilas to trim the double-digit deficit.

Greece began pulling away in the first with a 16-7 lead but the nationals bounced back with an offensive outburst in the second canto, battling toe to toe with the Greeks with 17 points in that frame to stay within striking distance at the half, 27-37.

Greece kept the Philippines at bay in the third canto amid several spurts sparked by team captain Jimmy Alapag and June Mar Fajardo.

Fajardo, who was virtually invisible during the FIBA Asia Championships last year, played quality minutes for coach Chot Reyes as he scored 10 points, collected 7 rebounds and 2 blocks.

Despite the 5-inch disparity in average height, Gilas wasn’t too far behind in rebounding down only 45-41 in that department.

The Philippines also shot effectively from the stripe, 16-of-20, despite taking fewer attempts than Greece, who went 21-of-30.

Much like the the game against Croatia, Gilas showed how competitive it can be against a powerhouse squad like Greece.

Blatche, who limped through most of the game as he played with a sore right knee, was subbed out to rest with over a minute left in the game. He had 21 points and 14 rebounds to lead Gilas.

Ginebra standouts LA Tenorio and Japeth Aguilar fought until the very end, scoring on a triple and a putback to make it just a 76-68 ballgame with under a minute remaining. But it wasn’t enough for the Philippines which needs two wins to advance to the next round.

Gilas Pilipinas will play Argentina at 11 pm today with only 19 hours rest.

For Greece, Georgios Printezis was unstoppable with his 25 markers and 8 boards.

The game was also marred by a scuffle at the buzzer as both benches cleared when Greece’s Ioannis Bourousis shoved Alapag.

Senegal beats Puerto Rico for historic FIBA World Cup win

SEVILLE, Spain - Senegal clinched their first victory at a world championship since 1998 on Sunday by beating Puerto Rico 82-75 at the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup.

"We are happy to win our first game at the World Cup. Nobody expected us to at least win a game except us. We have to be greedy, say we want more and look forward," said Senegal coach Cheikh Saar.

Mouhammad Faye poured in 20 points while Gorgui Dieng collected 18 points, 13 rebounds, two assists and two blocks for the Africans, who lost all five games at the 2006 World Championship in Japan.

Senegal's last victory occurred on August 3, 1998 when they beat South Korea 75-72. Their only other win at the world championship was in 1978 – an 89-79 win over China.

"We've been chasing this for a long time. In Japan, we almost had it," said Senegal captain Maleye Ndoye, a member of the 2006 team.

The Africans lost by only nine points to Puerto Rico and eight points to Italy at the tournament eight years ago.

Also in Group B action, Croatia defeated Argentina, 90-85, a night after being stretched to overtime by Gilas Pilipinas. Luis Scola had 30 points and 9 rebounds for Argentina.

Krunoslav Simon led Croatia with 18 points while NBA prospects Bojan Bogdanovic and Dario Saric each scored 16. Croatia import Oliver Lafayette had 11 points and 9 assists.

Day 2 Recap and Highlights

Day 2 of the 2014 FIBA World Cup is just as packed with action as Saturday and that’s good news for basketball fans. 12 games are featured on the Sunday schedule, and the matchups are worthy of the international stage.

The second day kicked off with an entertaining game between the Dominican Republic and New Zealand. The show was stolen once again by Dominican star Francisco Garcia, who amassed an impressive stat line that included 29 points, six rebound and two assists. Thomas Abercrombie managed to score 22 points and add four rebounds in the loss for New Zealand.

Another quality matchup was the battle between Croatia and Argentina. Despite being led by Luis Scola’s 30 points and nine rebounds, the Argentineans were unable to hold off the Croatians and lost a heartbreaker, 90-85. Bojan Bogdanovic was once again the key for Croatia and he totaled 16 points, seven rebounds, two assists and a steal in his 37 minutes of action.

In one of the best games of the day, France eeked out a 74-73 win over Serbia. Joffrey Lauvergne led a balanced French attack with 19 points. A key turnover by Bogdan Bogdanovic with the game tied and four seconds remaining gave France the ball with a chance to win.

Lauvergne drove to the lane and was fouled. He made one of two free throws to give France the win.

This squad has a good complement of skills, athleticism, length and experience. It could be one of the more dangerous teams in the tournament.

The two juggernauts of the field continue to look like the teams to beat in Spain. Team USA struggled a bit with Turkey at times, but it pulled away late to earn a 98-77 victory.

Kenneth Faried had 22 points and eight rebounds for the Americans to lead the way.

Spain was even more impressive. It beat Egypt 91-54. Serge Ibaka, Pau Gasol and Marc Gasol combined for 38 points and 16 rebounds. Spain's size and skill were too much for Egypt on the inside. That could be the case against most of its opponents leading up to a potential battle with Team USA in the gold medal game.

While Sunday is typically a day of rest, the FIBA World Cup has many of the top stars in basketball going full throttle for the fans.

Nanganganib ang Puerto Rico sa bracket natin, tinalo sila ng Senegal. May chance tayo sa Senegal and Puerto Rico at sana maka-advance tayo sa knockout rounds. Maganda pinakita natin versus Greece and Croatia. Natalo ng Croatia ang Argentina kahapon so malay natin ma-upset din natin ang Argentina lol.

FIBA World Cup Day 3 Scores

Spain def. Brazil 82-63

Senegal def. Croatia 77-75

Argentina def. Philippines 85-81

Greece def. Puerto Rico 90-79

Day 3 Recap and Highlights

The first two days of World Cup action didn't see too many surprises. Spain and the United States flexed their muscles, mid-tier countries battled through the most exciting contests and Argentina showed just how quickly an aging team can start to fall apart.

Senegal ensured things wouldn't be so predictable early Monday morning. Spurred by a dominant outing from Timberwolves center Gorgui Dieng, Senegal played Croatia basket-for-basket for the first three quarters and staved off a last-ditch comeback effort for a 77-75 upset.

Dieng scored 27 points, grabbed eight rebounds and blocked two shots as the Croatians struggled to find an answer. He also went 11-of-12 from the charity stripe, a streak Timberwolves fans will undoubtedly hope carries over to the NBA season.

Expected to be one of the teams cut from Group B after a blowout loss to Greece in the opener, the Senegalese are now in a good position with two straight wins. They were helped along in their effort later in the afternoon by Argentina, which continued its less-than-stellar play but was able squeak by for a close win over the Philippines.

Continuing his all-around brilliant tournament, Luis Scola scored a game-high 19 points in the 85-81 win. The Philippines had multiple opportunities in the last minute to tie the game or go ahead, but an ill-timed turnover from Jayson Williams and two missed threes from Andray Blatche clinched their fate.

Blatche, whose decision-making on the threes could have been better, finished with 14 points and 15 rebounds. He's been the star of a surprisingly competitive effort from the Filipinos, who have lost their three games by a total of 19 points. Ranidel De Ocampo scored a team-high 18 points and Jim Alapag knocked down five threes off the bench in the loss.

The Philippines will need to defeat Puerto Rico and Croatia in back-to-back days if it hopes to advance. Argentina, which got 17 points from Marcos Mata off the bench, should be through and may now have a chance to take Group B thanks to Croatia's loss.

Things went far more as planned on the other side of the bracket, which saw Serbia and France earn easy wins over the group's worst competition. Nemanja Bjelica scored 18 points, Bogdan Bogdanovic helped out with 16 and Serbia shot over 58 percent in an 83-70 win over Iran. Hamed Haddadi and Samad Nikkhah Bahrami combined to score 49 points in the loss for Iran, which dropped to 0-3.

France also didn't need much effort to earn an overwhelming 94-55 triumph over Egypt. Every French player scored at least a basket, while the starters spent most of their afternoon on the bench. Egypt, led by Ibrahim Elgammal with 12 points, made less than one-third of its shots.

The first of the evening matches saw Greece defeat Puerto Rico to move to 3-0 for the tournament and gain a stranglehold on Group B due to Croatia's upset loss earlier in the day.

Greece remained consistent throughout the match, scoring at least 20 points in each quarter along the way. The team's size advantage was well on display, and that led to 44 points in the paint—16 more than Puerto Rico accumulated—and 37 total rebounds.

Nikolaos Zisis was absolutely on fire for the Greeks, collecting 19 points while shooting 77.8 percent from the floor and an impressive 80 percent from downtown. Kostas Kaimakoglou was a monster in the paint, leading both teams in total rebounds with 11.

Puerto Rico saw two great scoring efforts from Renaldo Balkman and Jose Barea, as the duo combined for 44 of the team's 79 points. Although, shooting 38.7 percent from the floor as a team just wasn't good enough to come away with the win.

The day's final contest featured a matchup of unbeaten teams. Brazil took on world No. 2 Spain looking for an upset victory and big advantage in Group A. Well, that didn't come close to happening, as a 30-point first quarter for the Spaniards propelled them to a decisive 82-63 win and 3-0 record in tournament play.

Gasol was simply too much for Brazil to handle. He dominated the interior, and even showcased a nice stroke from outside, racking up a game-high 26 points while shooting 73 percent from the floor. Gasol also racked up a game-high nine rebounds along the way as well.

Serge Ibaka and Marc Gasol weren't exactly huge offensive threats on Monday, tallying a combined 13 points; however, both showcased their defensive abilities, helping Spain hold Brazil to shoot 41 percent from the floor as a team.

Anderson Varejao was held to make just 5-of-8 attempts from short range, resulting in a 10-point performance—good enough for second on the team behind the 11 points of Leandro Barbosa.

Spain continues to look more and more like the biggest threat to Team USA in this year's FIBA World Cup.

Gilas Pilipinas falls just short of major upset of 3rd-ranked Argentina

The Philippine national men’s basketball team once again showed its big fighting heart in coming back from a double digit fourth quarter lead but again barely missed an upset after falling to Argentina, 85-81, in Group B action of the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup in Seville, Spain.

Gilas Pilipinas came back from 10 points down in the fourth to come to as close as single point before falling just short of the upset of Argentina, which entered the tournament at No. 3 in the FIBA World Rankings.

Ranidel De Ocampo led the way with 18 points while team captain Jimmy Alapag added 15 – nine of them in the fourth period.

Naturalized NBA player Andray Blatche had his lowest scoring output of the tournament so far with 14 points but crashed the boards for 15 big rebounds.

Jayson Castro also reached double figures with 10 points.

Down by 10, 71-61, heading into the final period, the Filipinos again stormed back in the fourth as it had done in games past.

De Ocampo scored on a layup before he and Alapag knocked down back-to-back three-pointers for an 8-0 run that brought Gilas Pilipinas to within two, 71-69.

But Argentina doused the rally, stringing together two treys of their own to restore a 77-69 edge with seven minutes to play.

But the Philippines refused to give up.

Gabe Norwood hit a shot and Alapag hit another triple to cut the Argentineans lead to three, 79-76.

After Argentina responded with a long range bomb of their own, Gilas again inched closer on a basket from Blatche and another triple from Alapag – his third of the period – to come to within a single point, 82-81.

Andres Nocioni earned a trip to the free throw line but only connected on one of his two attempts to make it 83-81 in the final minute.

Castro was whistled for a travelling violation on Gilas next possession to give the ball back to Argentina, which got two more points on a pair of free throws from Nocioni.

The Filipinos got off to a dream start, opening the contest with a 12-2 run.

Blatche started off strong on the offensive glass, putting back two Gilas misses to kick off the game. After two free throws from Scola, De Ocampo scored a basket and Castro followed it up with back-to-back threes for the double digit lead.

Norwood added a monster jam in transition to cap what was one of the best stretches of basketball that the Philippines had played in the tournament.

Scola, who plays for the Indiana Pacers in the NBA, led Argentina for the third consecutive contest with 19 points.

The scores:
Argentina (85) – Scola 19, Mata 17, Laprovittola 10, Herrmann 10, Nocioni 9, Campazzo 9, Prigioni 8, Gutierrez 3.

Gilas Pilipinas (81) – De Ocampo 18, Alapag 15, Blatche 14, Castro 11, Norwood 6, Fajardo 6, Lee 6, Tenorio 3, Aguilar 2, Pingris 0, Chan 0.

Quarterscores: 22-25, 43-38, 71-61, 85-81.
