Gilas Pilipinas finds winning form to defeat Egypt

MANILA, Philippines - Gilas Pilipinas defeated the Egyptian national team at the Palacio Multiusos in Guadalajara, Spain to snap a 5-game losing streak in tuneup games leading in to this weekend’s FIBA World Cup opener.

The Philippines beat Egypt, 74-65 on Monday, August 25, behind the efforts of Jeff Chan and naturalized Filipino big man Andray Blatche, who finished with 20 and 14 points, respectively.

Jayson Castro sat out the game as Paul Lee took some of the scoring load, putting up 6 markers. Marc Pingris put up 12 points while reigning PBA MVP June Mar Fajardo contributed 8.

Chan scored half his total output in the first half to spearhead Gilas to a 31-29 lead against Egypt, which finished in second place in the recent FIBA Africa Championship.

After Gilas used a 17-5 run to establish a double digit lead in the third quarter, Egypt went on a run to attempt a last hurrah in the fourth period.

However, Chan and Ranidel De Ocampo were responsible for eight quick points that helped Philippines coast to the win in Guadalajara, Spain, in front of a crowd composed of mostly Filipinos.

Gilas wraps up their tuneup schedule on Tuesday, August 26, against Dominican Republic.

The Philippine national men’s basketball team gave Dominican Republic a tough battle, 86-79, on Monday in its final tune-up game before the 2014 FIBA World Cup in Spain.

Gilas Pilipinas competed with the 26th ranked Dominican Republic despite playing without star guard Jayson Castro, who continues to nurse an injury with under the a week remaining until the tournament.

Gabe Norwood led the Filipinos with 17 points, four rebounds and four assists while naturalized NBA player Andray Blatche finished with 16. LA Tenorio added 10 points.

The game was close for much of the game with the teams dueling to a 21-all deadlock in the first and the Philippines trailing by just four, 48-44, at the half.

The Dominicans led by as much as 10, 56-46, in the third after scoring eight unanswered points. But the Filipinos charged back behind PBA MVP June Mar Fajardo to come to within three, 57-54, before the fourth period.

A dunk from Norwood and a three-pointer from Tenorio highlighted the early goings of the fourth as Gilas hung tough until Jeff Chan hit another Philippine trey to take a 68-67 lead.

But the Houston Rockets’ Francisco Garcia scored two points to swing the lead back the Domincans way.

Norwood hit a couple of threes to keep the Philippine within two, 80-78, with under two minutes remaining.

malakas ang Dominican Republic kahit wala sa line-up si Horford at Villanueva (parehong NBA big men).

ang winnable sa Gilas is against Senegal pero ung makasilat pa sila ng ibang team. . . parang suntok sa buwan.

Davis, US beat Slovenia in basketball exhibition

LAS PALMAS, Canary Islands (AP) -- Mike Krzyzewski's big men had barely finished pushing around Slovenia when he was asked how they would match up with Spain's imposing frontcourt.

''I'm not going to compare. I haven't seen Spain play,'' Krzyzewski said. ''If we play Spain, it's a long way away. So I'm just concentrating on U.S. and trying to get better.''

There's plenty of time, but his big guys are looking pretty good so far.

Anthony Davis scored 18 points and teamed with Kenneth Faried to dominate the inside, leading the U.S. national team to a 101-71 victory over Slovenia on Tuesday in its final exhibition game before the FIBA World Cup of Basketball.

Faried finished with 14 points for the Americans, who next head to Bilbao, Spain, for their tournament opener Saturday against Finland. The defending world champions also will face Turkey, New Zealand, the Dominican Republic and Ukraine in pool play.

A matchup with Spain, and its big men of Pau Gasol, Marc Gasol and Serge Ibaka, wouldn't come until the gold-medal game on Sept. 14 in Madrid. The Americans picked a bigger team than usual after years of playing small, perhaps with Spain in mind, and appear capable of looking eye-to-eye with anyone.

''We just try to make sure that whatever we do, we do together, because we know it's going to be tough in the tournament,'' Davis said.

The Americans weren't particularly impressive throughout the last of their four warmup games, their first since picking their final 12-man roster on Saturday. But they were aggressive, with Davis and Faried wearing out the Slovenians - and even hooking up on a rare big-to-big alley-oop when Davis threw down Faried's lob pass for a 65-39 lead midway through the third quarter.

Kyrie Irving added 13 points while starting at point guard for the Americans ahead of Derrick Rose, and they played together at times. Rose had three points. Rudy Gay and Klay Thompson each scored 11.

The U.S. missed five of its first six free-throw attempts but got plenty more chances, finishing 29 of 46 at the line. Slovenia was just 10 of 17.

Phoenix Suns star Goran Dragic had only six points on 3-of-11 shooting as one of the many Slovenians saddled with foul problems. His brother, Zoran, led Slovenia with 16 points.

Slovenia will remain here to play in Group D, along with Lithuania, Angola, Australia, Mexico and Korea. The teams could meet again if both reach the knockout round, as Groups C and D are on the same side of the bracket and advance to Barcelona.

The U.S. led by six after one quarter, and then scored the first 10 of the second to open a 34-18 lead against the Slovenians, who struggled to go consecutive possessions without fouling. The lead was cut to 46-35 by halftime but the Americans quickly reopened a big cushion in the second half.

Slovenia was coming off a victory over Lithuania, which had been rolling through its exhibition schedule, but couldn't stay with the Americans, who had six players in double figures.

''We have high, high goals and I really ask for my players to win every game,'' Slovenia coach Jure Zdovc said. ''Tonight I was hoping that we can and I believe that we can play better and to make better resistance against the team of United States.''

There were elaborate pregame and halftime entertainment performances inside a lively Gran Canaria Arena, with enough costumes, dancers and acrobats to fill a circus routine. The game itself wasn't quite as pretty, the frequency of the fouls occasionally preventing much of a flow.

But the Americans worked through that with a superior effort by their big men, who consistently worked to keep balls alive on offense and contest shots on the other end, getting the U.S. guards out for fast breaks.

The U.S. finished with a 50-22 advantage in points in the paint.

FIBA World Cup: Gilas Pilipinas falls just short of overtime upset of favored Croatia

The Philippine national men’s basketball team came close to shocking upset victory in their introduction to the world stage after giving Group B favorite Croatia all it could handle in an 81-78 overtime loss in their opening contest of the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup in Seville, Spain.

Andray Blatche bounced back from a rough first half to finish with 28 points and 12 rebounds while gunner Jeff Chan added 17, including four threes, to lead a gallant Gilas Pilipinas stand.

Gilas came back from eight points down in the fourth period to go into overtime. Blatche scored all seven of the Philippines’ points in OT but fell just short near the end.

Blatche gave Gilas the lead, 75-73, with two minutes left in the extra period but Croatia got a big basket from 7-foot-2 center Ante Tomic and some immaculate free throw shooting from Bojan Bogdanovic to restore a four-point lead, 79-75.

But Blatche wasn’t done, hitting a three with just 5.4 seconds remaining to open the door ever so slightly for Gilas but could not get the job done in the end.

The Filipinos fell behind early after Croatia scored 13 unanswered points in the opening period to open up a 17-4 lead.

With Blatche struggling, missing six of his first seven shots, and the outside shots not falling, the Philippines limped to a 23-9 deficit after the opening 10 minutes.

But they played some trademark Philippine basketball in the second quarter.

Marc Pingris brought a spark early while Gilas coach Chot Reyes matched Croatia’s size with a Blatche and June Mar Fajardo combination in the frontcourt to stem the tide until the Gilas shooters finally got going.

Chan knocked down the first three-pointer for the Philippines and Jimmy Alapag wowed the crowd with a successful four-point play from a few steps behind the three-point line.

Chan closed out with another three that barely beat the buzzer to cap a 7-0 run for the Filipinos.

The Philippines trailed by just six, 37-31, at the half with Blatche, who shot 3-for-13 in the first half, Chan and Pingris leading a balanced Gilas offense with six points apiece.

The Philippines’ naturalized star did much better in the third, scoring eight points on 3-for-4 shooting as he gave a glimpse of his full offensive arsenal.

He pump faked his defender and stretched in for a layup plus the foul early in the period and later scored five straight points on a three and a two as he helped lead the Philippines to within four, 50-46.

After a dunk from Croatian big man Luka Zoric, Jayson Castro brought the team to within three points, 52-49, before getting some tough breaks to end quarter.

Castro, who was knocked off balance, was whistled for a technical foul for flopping. Croatia’s Krunoslav Simon hit both free throws and Damir Markota beat the buzzer with a three to give the Europeans a 57-49 lead entering the fourth.

True to its battlecry of ‘Puso’, Gilas refused to go away in the fourth.

They traded baskets with Croatia but still trailed by eight points, 64-56, halfway through the period before making their move.

Chan hit another three-pointer, Pingris toughed it out for two underneath and Blatche connected on another trey to tie the game at 64-apiece.

Zoric hit two free throws to give Croatia a 66-64 lead but Chan was fouled taking a three from the corner and he took care of all three attempts to give the Filipinos its first taste of the lead, 67-66, with 2:49 remaining.

Blatche followed it up with a jumper that gave them a 69-66 advantage with 2:20 left on the clock.

But Croatia got a big three from Simon to tie the game and Saric scored on a putback to give them back the lead at 71-69.

Castro, though, came up big for the Filipinos, driving and scoring with 39 seconds left to ensure the game would go to an extra period.

The scores:
Croatia (81) – Bogdanovic 26, Simon 12, Saric 10, Tomic 8, Markota 5, Ukic 5, Lafayette 4, Rudez 4, Zoric 4, Babic 3.

Gilas Pilipinas (78) – Blatche 28, Chan 17, Pingris 10, Castro 6, De Ocampo 5, Alapag 4, Tenorio 2, Norwood 2, Fajardo 2, Lee 2, Aguilar 0.

Quarterscores: 23-9, 37-31, 57-49, 71-71 (reg.), 81-78 (OT).

sayang yung last possession ng 4th qtr, tabla at sa atin pa bola, sayang lang di napasok ni jeff chan yung last shot..
pero it was a nice thrilling game, dikit talaga,.

Greece..  :-X :-X :-X
