Tropang Texters survive `hell week' after notching 3rd straight win at Air21 expense (12/22/13)

TALK ‘N Text continued to flash its old fiery form to frustrate Air21, 87-82, and keep in step with the leaders of the PLDT myDSL-PBA Philippine Cup on Sunday at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Gilas Pilipinas standouts Jayson Castro, Ranidel de Ocampo, and Larry Fonacier produced as expected for the Tropang Texters, who also drew solid numbers from back-up guard Jai Reyes on the way to their sixth victory in eight games.

Three of those wins came within this week where the Texters also turned back Rain or Shine, 90-87, last Tuesday and Barako Bull, 87-80, Friday.

“It’s a good thing we survived our hell week,” Texters coach Norman Black said of his team’s scheduled three games in six days. ““I was really concerned of our ability to finish and win the three games, but luckily we got through it.”

The Texters solidified their position at third place behind top guns Ginebra and Petron. They also added to the misery of the Express, who remained in the bottom of the standings with an eighth loss in nine games

Proving why he is one of Asia’s top guards, Castro pumped in 21 points, six boards, four assists, and two steals, while De Ocampo, who’s free from injury for a while now, was on target with four triples that anchored his 18-point output.

“It’s nice to see Ranidel back to his form again, making his outside shots,” Black said. “And Jayson also gave us lot of leadership and production today.”

Black was also pleased with the performance of Fonacier, the sharpshooter who finished with an unlikely double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds, and Reyes, who tallied 15 markers, three assists, and three steals.

The scores:

TALK N TEXT (87) – Castro 21, De Ocampo 18, Reyes 15, Fonacier 13, Carey 6, Seigle 5, Aban 5, Baclao 4, Williams 0, Anthony 0, Poligrates 0.

AIR21 (82) – Taulava 23, Yeo 13, Canaleta 13, Camson 8, Cardona 8, Manuel 6, Custodio 4, Jaime 3, Sharma 2, Matias 1, Burstcher 1, Arboleda 0, Ritualo 0.

Quarterscores: 20-18; 48-37; 67-57; 87-82.

Castro steps up for Texters to edge out Aguilar for Player of the Week honors

REIGNING Philippine Cup champion Talk ’N Text is on a roll, thanks to Jason Castro’s consistent performance as the Texters survived what coach Norman Black has described as a “hell week.”

Playing three games in a span of six days, Castro showed no signs of slowing down, averaging 18.6 points, 5.0 rebounds and 5.3 assists to help Talk ‘N Text score big wins over Rain or Shine, Barako Bull and Air21.

The lightning-quick guard out of Philippine Christian University banged in 13 points, hauled down three boards and dished off three assists, joining forces with Ranidel de Ocampo in a crucial second half burst to help Talk ’N Text turn back Rain or Shine, 90-87.

The Gilas Pilipinas guard continued to shine when he exploded for 23 points, six rebounds and nine assists three days after, stepping up big in the absence of veteran playmaker Jimmy Alapag to power Talk ’N Text to an 87-80 overtime victory over a tough Barako Bull side.

On Sunday, Castro kept up his stellar play, mocking the defenses thrown at him en route to a 21-point, six-rebound effort to lead Talk ’N Text to an 87-82 win over the Air21 Express.

Castro’s all-out effort gave the three-time all-Filipino conference champion a 6-2 win-loss record, good for third spot in the standings.

“Sinabi ni coach na kailangan ko mag-step up every game. Wala kasi si Ryan (Reyes) since the start of the conference so kailangan every game, nandun ako lagi,” said a soft-spoken Talk ’N Text guard, whose sterling performance earned him the Accel-PBA Press Corps. Player of the Week for the period covering December 15-22, edging out Barangay Ginebra’s athletic forward Japeth Aguilar.

Castro hopes the Texters could keep their razor-sharp form as they shoot for a league record fourth straight all-Filipino title.

`Captain Hook' Cardona stars as Air21 Express complete huge fightback in OT win over Batang Pier (12/25/13)

MACMAC Cardona, Asi Taulava, and Joseph Yeo lifted Air21 from the depths of an 18-point deficit as the Express completed a remarkable second half fightback to pull off a heart-stopping 109-103 overtime victory over Globalport in the first game of a PLDT myDSL-PBA Philippine Cup Christmas Day doubleheader at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Cardona nailed a tough, off-balance shot against Sol Mercado’s leech-like defense. He then came down with a crucial defensive rebound and a pair of foul shots in the final nine seconds to snap the Express’ three-game losing skid.

“At least, the slump is done already,” said an ecstatic Air21 coach Franz Pumaren, heaving a sigh of relief after the team booked just its second win in 10 outings this season.

“This is the type of team we are trying to envision. That even when we were down by 16 or 17, we just didn’t quit. I think that’s an improvement from our last game.”

Cardona, who missed the team’s 100-114 first round loss to Globalport, provided the much-needed energy boost for the Express, who trailed by as many as 18 points midway in the second period.

The 6-foot-1 Cardona, nicknamed `Captain Hook', along with Taulava finished with 28 points apiece, while Yeo had his first career triple-double of 19 points, 10 rebounds, and 14 assists for the Express.

The 6-foot-9 Taulava, even at 40, remains a solid force in the middle for the Express as he added 13 rebounds, including several layups towards the end of regulation play and early in the extension period, before fouling out of the game.

“Terrific effort by our Santa Claus Asi. He glued our team together. And of course, Joseph had his first career triple-double. I think he didn’t imagine getting a career 14 assists,” said Pumaren.

“Macmac also gave us the lift, the energy. But it’s a total team effort. We didn’t quit when we were down.”

The Express mentor hinted of about a roster revamp come January through trades after getting the full backing of management.

“Despite of us losing, we’re still upbeat with our current negotiation. We’ve been talking with management because we’ve been trying to get additional support so by January, we’ll get some new guys in our first game (for 2014),” he added.

Globalport, which dropped to 4-5, drew 35 points from Sol Mercado, while Jay Washington added 21 and nine boards.

Rookie Terrence Romeo added 16, but failed to reprise his PBA career-high 34 points during the first round against the Express after shooting just 1-of-10 from the field.

The scores

Air21 (109) -- Taulava 28, Cardona 28, Yeo 19, Manuel 14, Canaleta 11, Camson 5, Jaime 2, Custodio 2, Menor 0, Arboleda 0, Sharma 0.

GlobalPort (103) -- Mercado 35, Washington 21, Romeo 16, Salva 9, Lingganay 7,Menk 5, Salvador 4, Yee 2, Hayes 2, Garcia 2, Nabong 0, Chua 0.

Ginebra feasts on Fajardo-less Petron as mighty Slaughter throws weight around (12/25/13)

IT was supposed to be the match-up of the year pitting two of the biggest players to set foot on a PBA floor.

With June Mar Fajardo out, Greg Slaughter turned it into a one-man show.

The 6-11 Ginebra rookie threw his weight around as Barangay Ginebra gave its legion of fans a lot to smile about on Christmas day by routing Petron, 97-83, to move to the top of the leaderboard in the PLDT myDSL PBA Philippine Cup at a packed Mall of Asia Arena.

With an injured Fajardo in uniform but left to watch from the Petron bench, Slaughter was simply unstoppable inside as he scored 17 points, grabbed eight rebounds and had two blocks to set the tone for the most anticipated game of the season which Ginebra turned into a mismatch.

"At the start of the game, dahil wala si June Mar, parang nag-relax kami. But I told them to stick to our game plan," said Ginebra coach Ato Agustin. "I always remind them na whether he (Fajardo) plays or not, kailangan yung game plan natin ma-execute."

Japeth Aguilar added 25 points, 11 rebounds and two blocks while Mark Caguioa, Mac Baracael, and Chris Ellis also grabbed their share of the limelight before a crowd of 20,448 fans, who saw how a previously dominant Petron team can be so vulnerable without the 6-10 Fajardo.

Fajardo sat out the game after getting injured in practice on Monday.

Not surprisingly, it was Slaughter who made the biggest impact when Ginebra pulled away for good with a brief but telling run early in the fourth quarter on the way to its eighth win in nine games.

During that stretch, Slaughter scored four points against a smaller but physical Doug Kramer, grabbed two rebounds, and blocked one shot to help open an 83-68 edge for Ginebra.

Caguioa, who had 18 points on 9-of-13 shooting in his best game since coming down with a flu, added a runner and an alley-oop basket to turn the game into a full-blown rout, 91-72, with 4:10 remaining.

Reigning MVP Arwind Santos scored 22 points as he valiantly tried to carry the load for Petron, now 7-2 (win-loss) after dropping its second straight game.

The scores:

Ginebra 97 - Aguilar 25, Caguioa 18, Slaughter 17, Baracael 11, Ellis 8, Reyes 7, Urbiztondo 7, Monfort 3, Forrester 1, Ababou 0, Helterbrand 0, Tenorio 0, Faundo 0.

Petron 83 - Santos 22, Lutz 15, Ross 14, Kramer 11, Cabagnot 7, Lassiter 5, Lanete 4, Hubalde 4, Taha 1, Duncil 0, Tubid 0, Deutchman 0.

Quarterscores: 28-19, 47-42, 71-63, 97-83

Chan's three-pointer, Norwood defensive gem help Rain or Shine survive Barako (12/27/13)

EFF Chan buried the go-ahead three-pointer with 8.2 seconds left before Gabe Norwood made a key steal and a pair of free throws in the end as Rain or Shine survived a strong Barako Bull fightback, 99-95, in their PLDT myDSL-PBA Philippine Cup match on Friday at the Mall of Asia Arena.

The red-hot Chan banged in 34 points, one point shy of his career-best, while going 7-of-10 from beyond the arc. His late three-pointer put Rain or Shine’s head above water after former MVP Willie Miller hit the fallaway jumper that put Barako Bull on top.

“Jeff was playing well all night long," Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao said. "It’s just appropriate that it was his shot that won us the game.”

Barako Bull had one last chance to force overtime after Chan’s three-point shot gave Rain or Shine a 97-95 lead with eight seconds left, but Norwood stole JC Intal’s pass to Mick Pennisi off a Barako timeout.

The 6-5 Norwood sealed Rain or Shine’s sixth win in nine starts with a pair of foul shots.

“We played a bad second half. We just relaxed a little bit, but it’s a good thing Jeff saved the day for us,” said Guiao, whose team appeared headed for an easy win despite missing the services of wide-bodied big man Beau Belga due to measles.

They led for much of the first half and in the early part of the third period when Larry Rodriguez’s two free throws gave the E-Painters their largest lead at 58-43.

But the Energy slowly worked their way back into the game, mainly through the combined offensives of JC Intal, veteran center Dorian Pena, Rico Maierhofer and guard Dennis Miranda.

Intal scored 12 of his team-high 16 points in the second half, while Pena and Maierhofer repeatedly scored in the painted area, abusing Rain or Shine’s undersized frontline.

Miller then joined the fray when he buried a wide-open jump shot off Pena’s pick to give Barako Bull a 95-94 lead with 18 seconds to play.

“Barako Bull gave us a really tough time. They did not give up even if we had a double-digit lead in the first half. They just played great individually,” added Guiao.

The Energy, who shot just five triples in the game, fell to 3-7 (win-loss) as they remained in ninth place with four games to go on their schedule in the two-round eliminations.

The scores:

Rain or Shine 99 - Chan 34, Lee 14, Cruz 8, Nuyles 8, Norwood 8, Quinahan 6, Tang 6, Teng 5, Rodriguez 4, Arana 2, Almazan 2, Tiu 2, Ibanes 0.

Barako Bull 95 - Intal 16, Pena 15, Maierhofer 14, Miranda 14, Miller 9, Pennisi 6, Lastimosa 5, Isip 5, Jensen 4, Macapagal 3, Marcelo 2, Labagala 2, Wilson 0, Buenafe 0.

Quarterscores: 28-21, 56-42, 75-69, 99-95

Japeth Aguilar's last-gasp trey caps improbable Ginebra comeback against Meralco (12/28/13)

JAPETH Aguilar punctuated his endgame heroics with a buzzer-beating three-pointer that completed an improbable Barangay Ginebra comeback against Meralco, 83-82, in their PLDT myDSL-PBA Philippine Cup match at the Mall of Asia Arena.

The 6-9 Aguilar, who struggled against Reynel Hugnatan’s defense for the most part, exploded in the nick of time as he fired seven of Ginebra’s last 10 points including the last-gasp three-pointer that led the team back from a five-point deficit with 16 seconds left in the Petron Saturday special game.

“Mas gusto ko nang maitira niya (Aguilar) keysa hindi," said Ginebra coach Ato Agustin of the final play, which saw LA Tenorio struggle to find a shot before passing out to Aguilar who similarly had a hard time getting off an attempt against Hugnatan.

Aguilar, however, managed to launch a three-pointer off Hugnatan's outstretched arms which found the mark almost simultaneously with the final buzzer.

"Sinuwerte at pumasok,” said a relieved Agustin afterwards.

Aguilar's late-game heroics bailed out Ginebra from what could have been another horror loss against the underdog Bolts, who dealt the league's most popular team its only setback so far this season, 100-87.

Unlike their first round meeting when Ginebra’s tall frontline of Aguilar and rookie center Greg Slaughter were rendered ineffective, the Gin Kings stuck with their Twin Towers and reaped the benefits.

Slaughter registered his ninth double-double of the season after finishing with 17 points and 11 rebounds while Aguilar added 15 points and 11 boards for the Gin Kings, who improved their league-best record to 9-1 after a sixth successive win.

Still, the Bolts had all the chances to pull off a double against Ginebra as they led by six points with a minute left and by five in the dying seconds until slotman Jay-R Reyes hit a stunning three-pointer from the deep left corner to revive the Kings' hopes.

John Wilson had another chance to wrap up the game with 12 seconds left but missed his two free throws, setting the stage for Aguilar's game-winning trey.

Jared Dillinger scored 16 points while Hugnatan added 13 for the Bolts, who dropped their fourth straight game this season to fall into a tie with idle San Mig Super Coffee Mixers at 3-6.

The scores:

GINEBRA 83 - Slaughter 17, Aguilar 15, Baracael 14, Tenorio 13, Ellis 7, Caguioa 6, Urbiztondo 5, Reyes 3, Monfort 2, Helterbrand 1, Mamaril 0.

MERALCO 82 - Dillinger 16, Hugnatan 13, Wilson 12, David 9, Cortez 8, Caram 6, Sena 6, Allado 6, Guevarra 3, Hodge 3, Al-Hussaini 0.

Quarterscores: 27-22, 40-40, 59-60, 83-82

Lassiter takes charge as Petron bucks Fajardo absence to rip cold-shooting Talk 'N Text (12/28/13)

DESPITE missing injured center June Mar Fajardo for the second straight time, Petron Blaze stood strong to whip defending champion Talk ‘N Text, 105-91, and cement its hold of the No. 2 spot in the PLDT myDSL-PBA Philippine Cup on Saturday at the Mall of Asia Arena.

After a frustrating first half that saw the Boosters trail by as many as 10 points, Petron went to work in the third period behind Marcio Lassiter and Alex Cabagnot’s red-hot shooting as they outscored the Texters, 31-12, to put the game under control.

Making matters worse for Talk ‘N Text was its frigid 3-of-23 field goal shooting in the third canto, allowing Petron to take a comfortable 76-64 lead entering the final period on the way to snapping a two-game losing skid and improving to 8-2 overall.

On the other hand, the Texters saw their three-game winning streak come to an end, dropping to a tie at third spot with the idle Rain or Shine E-Painters at 6-3.

“We started slow but we picked it up in the second half. We just want to be aggressive and continue playing defense, that got us (back) in (the game),” said Lassiter, who finished with 22 points, spiked by three triples to earn Best Player of the Game honors.

Petron coach Gee Abanilla commended his players for coming out with a strong defensive effort in the second half, which allowed them to turn the table against the three-time defending champions.

“I think we played a better defensive job in the second half because in the first half, we allowed them (Texters) to score a lot of three-point shots, especially Larry Fonacier. But we rotated pretty well on defense,” said Abanilla, whose team drew another splendid effort from Doug Kramer, Fajardo’s chief backup in the middle.

The undersized Kramer finished with a near double-double of eight points and 10 rebounds, while sophomore center Yousef Taha, who is third in the team’s depth chart, added six and four rebounds.

Jason Castro led Talk ‘N Text with 23 points, while Fonacier added 19. Ranidel de Ocampo chipped in 12 and 11 rebounds.

The scores:

PETRON (105) -- Lassiter 22, Santos 19, Lutz 16, Cabagnot 12, Tubid 8, Kramer 8, Taha 6, Deutchman 6, Lanete 4, Duncil 2, Ross 2.

TALK N' TEXT (91) -- Castro 23, Fonacier 19, De Ocampo 12, Seigle 10, Reyes J. 7, Baclao 4, Poligrates 4, Carey 4, Aban 2, Williams 2, Anthony 2, Alapag 2, Celiz 0.

Quarterscores: 17-27; 45-52; 76-64;105-91.

Barako Bull makes experience count as Pena, Miranda overwhelm GlobalPort (12/29/13)

BARAKO Bull leaned on a strong fourth-quarter offensive to turn back a pesky Globalport squad, 108-95 and step up its playoff bid in the PLDT myDSL-PBA Philippine Cup on Sunday at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Dennis Miranda and Mick Pennisi provided the timely shooting while fellow veteran Dorian Pena proved a major force off both boards for Barako Bull, who slowly pulled away in the second half on the way to its fourth win against seven losses.

“Sabi ko lang sa mga players kanina, we came from a hard game because against Rain or Shine na parang panalo na kami, eh natalo pa, but that’s (loss) part of the game,” said Barako Bull coach Bong Ramos.

“Sabi ko rin sa kanila, we approached Christmas with a win against Meralco and on Sunday, it’s God’s day, this will be our last game for December 2013, so let’s approach the new year with a bang,” he added.

The game was marked by 13 deadlocks and the same number of lead changes. But with the Energy Cola made the decisive burst at the start of the final period behind back-to-back three-pointers from JC Intal and rookie guard Carlo Lastimosa.

From there, Miranda, Pennisi and Willie Miller combined to score 16 of the team’s 26 fourth-quarter points as the Energy Cola handed the Batang Pier their third straight loss this conference - and sixth in 10 games.

Miranda led Barako Bull with 19 points, six rebounds and five assists, while Pena chipped in 15 and 10 boards. Pennisi finished with 14 while Lastimosa added 12 off the bench.

On the other hand, Barako Bull’s sticky defense held Globalport’s leading scorer Sol Mercado to a quiet 12 points on 3-of-17 from the field overall including a frigid 1-of-10 from beyond the arc.
Jay Washington scored a career-high 30 points to pick up the scoring cudgels for the sputtering Batang Pier, while rookie Terrence Romeo added 16 points.

The scores:

BARAKO 108 - Miranda 19, Pena 15, Pennisi 14, Lastimosa 12, Jensen 11, Isip 10, Intal 9, Miller 7, Macapagal 6, Maierhofer 3, Wilson 2, Buenafe 0.

GLOBALPORT 95 - Washington 30, Romeo 16, Mercado 12, Garcia 8, Nabong 7, Hayes 6, Yee 4, Chua 4, Salva 4, Lingganay 2, Menk 2, Revilla 0, Salvador 0.

Hot-shooting Rain or Shine ends year with bang by gunning down San Mig (12/29/13)

RAIN or Shine ended the year with a barrage of three-point bombs as it routed a listless San Mig five, 101-77 to stay in the hunt for a top-two finish in the PLDT myDSL-PBA Philippine Cup eliminations on Sunday.

Paul Lee, Jeff Chan and big man JR Quinahan converted three or more three-point bombs apiece in a brilliant show of outside marksmanship that broke the backs of the Mixers and silenced their fans at the Mall of Asia Arena.

So disappointed was San Mig coach Tim Cone that he refused to speak to his player during huddles, letting his assistant coaches led by Jeff Cariaso run the team in the second half with little success.

Paul Lee scored 15 points while going 5-of-7 from beyond the three-point arc while Chan and Quinahan each had three triples in an awesome display of outside shooting two days before the New Year.

“This is the best way for us to end the year. We just gave ourselves a New Year’s gift while we also caught San Mig Coffee on a night when I felt they were mentally down,” Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao said after the team's third straight win for a 7-3 mark.

Rookie center Raymond Almazan posted his first career double-double of 17 points and 11 rebounds, while adding two blocks as he started in place for Beau Belga, who sat out for the second straight game due to a bout with measles.

San Mig, which fell to 3-7, was led by James Yap's 16 points.
