Since wala pa separate thread for PBA, i decided to make one! Dito po natin i-post about the latest news, updates, and scores sa PBA.

I'll start po!

Mixers go for the kill

They have overcome a scrambling 1-3 tournament start, survived a sudden death in the quarterfinals and withstood a battle in the semifinals.

And the San Mig Coffee Mixers now want to go all the way to the top.

The Mixers take the first of two cracks at closing out the PBA Governors’ Cup best-of-seven Finals, trying to finish off the embattled Petron Blaze Boosters in Game Six Wednesday night at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

“As the series gets longer it gets tougher. Our mindset is that it’s going to be tougher than the last game,” said San Mig Coffee coach Tim Cone.

Cone, however, stressed they would not give themselves extra load.

“I’ve been here before, and I don’t want to overstate the fact that they’re a good team. I don’t want to be prophetic saying they’re capable of turning the series around. We’re just gonna rely on our games and just play,” Cone pointed out.

Successful in the last two games putting the Boosters out of their comfort zone, Cone said the idea is to do the same in Game Six.

“We’ll try to find a way to keep them uncomfortable,” said Cone, a win away from leading San Mig Coffee to a 10th crown and a win shy of tying coach Baby Dalupan’s long standing, all-time record of 15 championships.

He just can’t rule out a Petron comeback.

“Right now, we’re down but definitely not out,” said Petron coach Gee Abanilla.

There’s a situation right now at Petron, and it’s up for Abanilla to exploit it or blow it.

MVP winner Arwind Santos is in depth of despair following his poor showing in the last two games, and Abanilla has a good rallying point for his team right there.

Santos is begging for support while Abanilla is saying they’re not losing trust and confidence in their main man. The Boosters could be ready to rally around Santos.

Cone, meanwhile, insists they will just come out and play.

On the verge of completing a Finals upset, the Mixers would still rather just play and not put unwanted pressure on themselves.

For the record, the Purefoods/San Mig franchise has won two championships in four times they’ve taken the 3-2 lead from two-all. (SB)

Kerby reunites with coach Ryan at Meralco; Reyes to Ginebra

Even before the curtains close on the 2013 PBA season, another trade has been approved by the PBA Commissioner’s office.

The move has been circulating in basketball circles for quite a while already, and now the reunion between veteran big man Kerby Raymundo and his long-time mentor Ryan Gregorio has been sealed.

In a one-on-one swap, Meralco acquired the power forward from Orion, Bataan from Barangay Ginebra San Miguel for the Bolts’ Jay-R Reyes.

“Yes, it has been done… finally,” said our source, of the trade which was approved Tuesday afternoon.

The deal will be beneficial for both teams as Raymundo will provide the needed muscle inside for Meralco, while Reyes can beef up Ginebra’s frontline.

Both players will hopefully get the desired playing minutes on their new teams, as their spots as talented big guys are quite rare commodities these days.

PBA mulls kicking off Season 39 with simultaneous games

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Basketball Association is looking at the proposal to hold simultaneous games in Manila, Cebu and Davao with a theme “Luzon, Visayas, Mindanao: One Nation” in the inaugurals of PBA Season 39 in Nov. 17.

“That’s the proposal of TV5 which looks okay with the board,” PBA media bureau chief Willie Marcial told The STAR.

It’s going to be grand festivities starting at 2 p.m. with six teams, with their muses, parading at the Smart Araneta Coliseum, two at the New Cebu Coliseum and two at a Davao playing venue.

The Smart Araneta Coliseum match, to be tipped off at 3 p.m., will be telecast live on TV5, followed by the Davao game at 5 p.m. then the Cebu tiff at 7 p.m.

“The board is open to the proposal. It’s not simple. It requires much logistics. They’re now looking at how this can be done,” said Marcial of the innovative opening rites.

The PBA has never gone out of town for its inaugurals in its first 38 years of being.

The Big Dome, however, still serves as the main venue where incoming board chairman Ramon Segismundo of Meralco declares the season open.

The Smart Araneta Coliseum also hosts most of the games in PBA Season 39 that holds four regular double-headers in a week – Sundays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

“It’s still part of the adjustment of the league calendar to give way to Smart Gilas’ participation in the last FIBA Asia tourney,” said Marcial.

The new PBA season ends by the second week of Aug. 2014, giving coach Chot Reyes and Gilas at least two weeks of dedicated training for the 2014 World Championship in Spain.

“Coach Chot has yet to sit down with the PBA board for his program. But before Aug. 2014, malamang nag-e-ensayo na sila at least once-a-week,” said Marcial.

Several stars in new teams and a bumper crop of rookies will be in showcase in the league’s new season.

Among the freshmen to watch are Greg Slaughter, Ian Sangalang, Raymond Almazan, Terrence Romeo, RR Garcia and Jeric Teng.

Their takers will be known on the 2013 Annual Rookie Draft set Nov. 3 at Robinson’s Place Ermita.

Barangay Ginebra is tipped to exercise its rights on the top pick on 7-foot-1 Slaughter while San Mig Coffee is expected to make 6-foot-7 Sangalang as the second choice.

Petron Blaze sets up winner-take-all match Friday

PETRON Blaze just showed the poise that made it a title favorite.

The Boosters bucked San Mig Coffee’s own tough stance to carve a 99-88 win Wednesday and forge a deciding match in their PLDT Telpad-sponsored PBA Governors Cup championship series at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Elijah Millsap shook off an injured foot to score 30 points and had plenty of help in the endgame as Petron withstood a blown 16-point lead to level the best-of-seven series at three games apiece.

The do-or-die match is set Friday, also at the Big Dome, and that is one game Petron rookie coach Gee Abanilla is looking forward to.

“We’re just very happy with the opportunity presented to us,” said Abanilla.

“It’s a great honor to play an elite team like them, especially coached by a great coach Tim (Cone). We’ll come out prepared on Friday. It’s Game 7 of the Finals. It’s a dream of coaches and players.”

“We wanted to avoid a winner-take-all game, too many things can happen,” said Cone, whose charges failed to close it out after back-to-back victories in Games 4 and 5.

“We didn’t play really well tonight. We cannot play this team without all cylinders firing. We have to be very precise in our execution on both sides of the floor. But trying to beat them three games in a row is a huge mountain to climb.”

June Mar Fajardo notched 21 points and 14 rebounds, but it was the small lineup made up of Millsap, Arwind Santos, Chris Lutz, Marcio Lassiter and Alex Cabagnot which took the team home after San Mig charged back from a 43-59 deficit.

PJ Simon, Marc Pingris and Joe Devance took over the cudgels for Marqus Blakely in the fightback, but San Mig lost steam just when it mattered.

Blakely had 21 points and 11 rebounds of his own, but only two points in the decisive period and compounded that with two of his five turnovers.

Simon scattered 11 of his 14 points in the fourth, Pingris eight of his 13 and Devance six of his 17, yet their efforts were simply not enough.

James Yap also had 17 points but he went scoreless in the fourth period while Mark Barroca, key in their last two victories, was a virtual non-factor in the scoring end after being saddled by foul trouble early.

The reverse is true of Petron, especially in the case of Millsap.

The sore left foot bugging Millsap all tournament long and which seemingly got aggravated in the second quarter did not seem to affect his performance, especially in the crunch after the Mixers even took an 82-80 lead.

“My team drove me in the fourth. We don’t wanna lose,” said Millsap, who scored 13 of his points to more than match the entire Mixers’ output in the last 5:45 of the game.

Lutz scored on a couple of drives and had a block and a steal, Lassiter had a dagger of a 16-footer and Cabagnot ably orchestrated play while converting on a layup of his own.

Devance matched his conference-high of 17 with his third triple, tying the game for only the first time at 80, 7:42 left, and Blakely’s drive gave San Mig its first taste of the lead since surging to an early 11-6 spread.

Held to only two charities and 18 minutes in Game 5, Santos was all over the court in the first quarter with six points, three rebounds and as many assists and finished with 12 points and six rebounds in 37 minutes.

The newly-adjudged MVP also had six assists, his last feed to Millsap resulting in a fall away that made it 87-86 and got Petron’s stretch run in the last 4:50, helped along by Blakely’s miscues, fully going.

“We made a lot of errors,” noted Cone, whose team committed a total 14 turnovers. “We rushed our offense down the stretch.”

It was practically the same storyline in the third period as San Mig’s rally drew it within 59-61, but initially blew the chance to tie when Pingris missed from underneath.

And while the Mixers would go on to miss four of their next six shots, Millsap, Fajardo, Santos and Cabagnot were able to conspire for a 13-4 surge that made it an 11-point game going to the last 12 minutes of the contest.

Millsap went to work early and his teammates were ready to back him up.

Millsap led the Petron attack with 14 points, while drawing chief support from Fajardo and Santos, enabling him to play through what appeared to be a sprain after stepping on Alex Mallari’s foot on a drive.

For his part, Fajardo already had a double-double as early as the first half with 12 points and 10 rebounds and his undergoal stab and ensuing block on Pingris resulted in a Cabagnot freebie that made it a 52-39 count at the half.

Petron actually started taking took control of the game just barely five minutes into the game with a 13-0 run from a 6-11 deficit sparked by three charities by Ronald Tubid off Blakely’s foul and highlighted by a triple each by Cabagnot and Millsap.

Yap and Blakely each had 11 points at the half but making things look bleak for San Mig were the three fouls being carried by Mallari and Barroca with still plenty of time left before the turn that somehow took some edge off their effectiveness. (NC)

The scores:

Petron 99 – Millsap 30, Fajardo 21, Santos 12, Cabagnot 12, Lutz 11, Lassiter 7, Tubid 6, Kramer 0, Hubalde 0, Ildefonso 0.

San Mig Coffee 88 – Blakely 21, Devance 17, Yap 17, Simon 14, Pingris 13, Reavis 4, Mallari 2, Gaco 0, Barroca 0, De Ocampo 0.

Quarters: 28-19, 52-39, 74-63, 99-88

PETRON starting guard Alex Cabagnot and import Elijah Millsap suffered injuries in Game Six of the PBA Governors Cup Finals against San Mig, but both are not about to quit.

Not with the championship on the line.

Cabagnot told Spin.ph at halftime of Game Six that he had again hurt the plantas fascia on his foot, which had already sidelined him for two games in the early part of the best-of-seven series.

"I heard it snap. I'm scared. It pains me so much," said the shifty guard as he limped out of the court to the dugout. "But I can't leave the team just like that."

"I'll still play this through. Kakayanin ko.Just pray that it doesn't get worse," he added.

On the other hand, Millsap suffered a sprain in the second quarter when he stubbed his foot against the floor after getting fouled on a drive by San Mig's Alex
Mallari.

The prolific import, who had already been advised against wearing low-cut shoes, was later seen changing from his Nike Kobe 8 System shoes to his street wear kicks, mid-top Air Jordan 3s, after the incident.

"Sabi n'ya masakit ang kaliwang paa n'ya," said a Petron staff of Millsap, who like Cabagnot started the second half but was in obvious pain. Petron consultant Todd Purves, however, said quitting is not an option. San Mig leads the series, 3-2.

"Everything is on the line now," he said.

"Everybody knows we can't quit."

Boosters, Mixers duel for PBA glory, history

Game today (Smart Araneta Coliseum)

8 p.m. – Petron Blaze vs San Mig Coffee

MANILA, Philippines - Game Seven always comes with all the drama and thrill only do-or-die matches provide. This one also comes in with a dash of history and dose of personal milestones.

Petron Blaze and San Mig Coffee both try to further embellish their respective legacy in the league as they fight for all the marbles in the final game of PBA Season 38.

It’s Game Seven with the Governors Cup crown on the line as the Boosters and the Mixers slug it out at 8 tonight before an expected sellout crowd at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Either Petron Blaze, the league’s winningest ball club with 19 titles, reigns anew or San Mig Coffee makes the one final push it failed to deliver last year, the league’s 22nd Game Seven serves as a fitting climax to a season that saw Filipino cage stars return as a major force in regional basketball with their smashing success in the Fiba Asia qualifier.

Private shots at history also come into play as San Mig coach Tim Cone seeks to match the all-time best record of 15 championships owned by the legendary Baby Dalupan or Petron coach Gee Abanilla makes it on his own with a Cinderella finish as a rookie coach.

“Game 7 wasn’t something we particularly wanted to see at this point. But I’m happy for the fans because there is nothing more exciting than a Game 7 in a championship series,” said Cone. “Both teams have been slugging it out the whole series, so going to a Game 7 is a fitting end. We’re asking our guys to just embrace the whole experience and enjoy the ride.”

He added: “We like our chances.”

Like Cone, Abanilla is also upbeat of the Boosters chances, boosted by their morale-boosting 99-88 win last Wednesday that forced this Game 7.

“Definitely, we are going all out to get the most important win in our Governors Cup campaign,” said Abanilla. “Our objectives are still clear – we want to do things right, be good at it and continually improve ourselves.”

“Trying to beat them three in a row was a huge mountain to climb. We have no other recourse now but to go at it at a deciding Game Seven,” said Cone.

Elijah Millsap endured pain on his right foot, carrying Petron on his shoulders in the most critical situation as the Boosters smothered the Mixers, 99-88, Wednesday to force the no-tomorrow setto.

Millsap said he’s been playing through injury all year long and promised to be ready for his most important game in the local pro league tonight.

Both teams are not unfamiliar in showdowns like this – the San Miguel Beer/Petron franchise and the Purefoods/San Mig Coffee ball club have been both to seven Game Sevens, each one winning thrice and losing four times.

And both won their last crowns via the full distance of a best-of-seven title series – San Mig Coffee (then playing under the banner of B-Meg) in the 2012 Commissioner’s Cup and Petron Blaze in the 2011 Governors Cup.

The Mixers bungled a shot at back-to-back championships as they lost to the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters in a sudden death in this very tourney last year.

Marqus Blakely was right there at the Big Dome, out on fouls as Rain or Shine completed its breakthrough title run and foiled San Mig’s own bid in the process.

Cone brought back Blakely purposely to finish an unfinished business in the PBA.

Blakely, Pingris come up big as San Mig slays Petron for Governors' Cup crown

The San Mig Coffee Mixers defeated the Petron Blaze Boosters 87-77 to claim the 2013 Governors' Cup title Friday at the Araneta Coliseum.

The two teams entered the final three minutes with San Mig ahead by four after an Elijah Millsap make, 78-74. The Petron import only managed a split in his next trip to the line, as the Mixers maintained a three-point lead with 2:24 remaining. Marqus Blakely then completed a steal, before soaring for a layup to pad their lead with 1:47 to go. Arwind Santos hit back quickly, but Blakely took it strong for an and one, 82-77.

Good defense from Marc Pingris leads to another San Mig possession with 69 seconds left in the game. The Gilas standout and Barroca then connected on their charities to seal the deal.

It's the tenth title for the San Mig Coffee franchise, their first since the 2012 Commissioner's Cup.

The Coffee mixers raced off to a 6-1 start in the first after a Marc Pingris one-hander. The Boosters then found their range, as Arwind Santos, Marcio Lassiter and Elijah Millsap connected with jumpers for an 8-6 edge, before Mark Barroca tied the game at 8-all.

James Yap and Pingris found their way around the Petron interior defense, before Barroca connected with a pull up for a 19-13 spread. But after a Millsap jumper, Doug Kramer and Chris Lutz converted to end the first with the two teams knotted up at 19 all.

Marqus Blakely and Alex Mallari pushed San Mig ahead to start the second, 25-21, before Millsap and Chris Lutz tied it up anew at 26-all. June Mar Fajardo then strung five straight for a 28-26 Petron advantage, before PJ Simon connected from deep to knot it up at 31-all.

Four straight from Blakely briefly gave San Mig the upper hand, but Fajardo couldn't be denied, getting one off the glass. James Yap continued to go hard for another bucket, while PJ Simon made it a four-point game in his team's favor with 67 seconds left in the half, 39-35.

Millsap briefly stopped the bleeding for the Boosters, but Barroca responded with his own jumper to sustain the advantage. Fajardo ended the second with a putback to make it 41-39 for San Mig after two.

It was a total team effort for San Mig after two, as Blakely, Barroca and Pingris all registered eight points each. The Coffee Mixers' import also had nine boards at the half with two steals and an assist. Yap and Simon chipped in six apiece, as Devance and Mallari scored three and two, respectively.

Fajardo led Petron with 12 points, six rebounds and a block, while Millsap had 11. Lassiter and Lutz had six and four points.

The Petron import sparked the start of the second half with a slam, before Arwind Santos connected with a jumper, 43-41. Blakely, Joe Devance and Pingris strung points together to give San Mig a slim lead, but two makes from Fajardo, followed by a Lassiter bucket made it 53-48 for the Boosters.

Four from Blakely and Pingris inched San Mig closer, before Simon started to sizzle for a 7-3 swing and a 60-56 lead. The Boosters responded with their own mini run, as a pair of charities from Fajardo, followed by an Alex Cabagnot long bomb had Petron leading 61-60, with 1:03 to go. A 5-0 run by San Mig gave the Mixers a four-point advantage heading into the payoff period, though, 65-61.

The Mixers looked to finish strong in the fourth, as four from Simon, followed by a Devance trey and a Pingris bucket stretched the lead to nine, 74-65. Millsap stopped the bleeding with a triple at the 7:09 mark, as James Yap snapped a two-minute scoring drought for both teams with two charities. Blakely cancelled out a Cabagnot triple with his own make, while Millsap tried to keep Petron afloat, 78-74.

Finished business: San Mig Coffee spills Petron to win 2013 Governors’ Cup

Finished business: San Mig Coffee spills Petron to win 2013 Governors’ Cup

The San Mig Coffee Mixers are finally the champions of the Governors’ Cup.

After losing in the title round last year, the Mixers outlasted the Petron Blaze Boosters, 85-77, in Game Seven of the PLDT Telpad finals on Friday before 21,319 fans at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum to take the crown.

Marc Pingris finished with 19 points, 17 rebounds, and five blocks while anchoring the San Mig Coffee defense that ground the high-octane offense of Petron.

The title was the 15th for San Mig Coffee coach Tim Cone, tying the record of legendary coach Baby Dalupan at the top of the PBA’s all-time list.

“I’m very humbled at the moment,” said Cone. “Our boys worked so hard for it.”
