(UAAP Basketball) Ravena, Pessumal take flight, carry Ateneo over La Salle
MANILA, Philippines - It turns out coach Bo Perasol was wrong: The Ateneo Blue Eagles do have an edge against the De La Salle Green Archers. And their names are Kiefer Ravena and Von Pessumal.
A week after Perasol declared “Ateneo has no edge whatsoever over La Salle” following their win over Adamson, Ravena and Pessumal combined for 50 points (Ravena with 29 points, Pessumal with 21) to save Ateneo from a sluggish start and send the Archers to a 0-2 hole with a 97-86 victory in the UAAP Season 77 men's basketball tournament on Sunday, July 20 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

(UAAP Basketball) Ferrer's late threes lead UST past FEU
MANILA, Philippines - It's a familiar sight, one that happens when the University of Sto. Tomas Growling Tigers are nearing victory.
Kevin Ferrer, after making a three, looked up to the UST crowd and lashed his tongue out, basking in the moment.
On Sunday, July 20, that moment made its first appearance in the 77th season of the UAAP, as Ferrer hit clutch threes to guide his Growling Tigers past the Far Eastern University Tamaraws, 69-67, at the Smart Araneta Coluseum.

MANILA, Philippines - A day after Gilas Pilipinas bagged the bronze medal in the FIBA Asia Cup in Wuhan, China, another Philippine basketball team achieved an unlikely milestone right on its home turf.
Manila West banked on guile, guts and fed off a wildly-cheering hometown crowd in stunning fancied Doha of Qatar, 21-17, to capture the FIBA 3x3 World Tour Manila Masters crown on Sunday, July 20, at SM Megamall.

(UAAP Basketball) Perkins delivers as La Salle punches in first win at NU's expense
MANILA, Philippines - It took 3 games but the defending champion De La Salle Green Archers hung on tight and banked on Jason Perkins to claim their first win in 3 outings over the gritty NU Bulldogs, 57-55, in the men's basketball tournament of UAAP Season 77 on Wednesday, July 23 at the Mall of Asia Arena.

(UAAP Basketball) UST escapes Adamson behind Kent Lao's game-winning free throw
MANILA, Philippines - Kent Lao turned coal into gold as the UST Growling Tigers bucked a sloppy game and escaped with a 50-49 over the Adamson Soaring Falcons in the men's basketball tournament of the UAAP Season 77 on Saturday, July 26 at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Lao, who emerged with 14 points in a win over the Tamaraws this past Sunday, came through for UST in the end to save his squad.
In front of a tense crowd, Lao split from the line with 1.1 seconds on the clock to break the 49-all deadlock and shove UST ahead by a hair, 50-49, and ultimately give them the victory.

STANFORD, Calif. (AP) -- Serena Williams looked healthy and played sharp in her first tournament since defaulting during a doubles match with sister Venus at Wimbledon.
The top-ranked player stopped worrying and started having fun again, beating Karolina Pliskova 7-5, 6-2 in a second round match at the Bank of the West Classic on Wednesday night.
At Wimbledon, Williams tried to play through a viral infection that caused her to lose her equilibrium during the doubles match. On Wednesday night, encouraged by a large crowd, Williams fought through a tough first set before she found her legs and took control of the match with a big second set.

(Formula One) Hungarian Grand Prix - Hamilton claims thrilling podium, Ricciardo wins
Changing weather conditions and several safety car outings played havoc with team tactics, allowing Hamilton to seize a podium finish just 24 hours after trudging despondently away from his smouldering Mercedes after an engine fire in qualifying.
Hamilton's team-mate and title rival Nico Rosberg came fourth, having failed to overtake the Briton in a desperate last lap battle. Although Hamilton only trimmed his team-mate's points lead by three to 11, it was an important psychological blow in a race where the polesitter Rosberg had been expected to extend his advantage significantly.

(UAAP Basketball) UP ends two-year losing skid with rout of Adamson
MANILA, Philippines - It took two years, but the UP Fighting Maroons were finally reminded of what it's like to win.

Once UP saw gunners like JR Gallarza and Mikee Reyes get into a deadly shooting groove in the first half, it was quite evident their losing streak would stop at 27.
The Maroons' last won a game in Season 75 with a 63-48 drubbing of UE on Aug 19, 2012.

(UAAP Basketball) UAAP reschedules Ateneo-La Salle match for Sunday
MANILA, Philippines - In a surprising turn of events, the UAAP has rescheduled its second round matchup between the Ateneo De Manila Blue Eagles and De La Salle Green Archers to this Sunday, August 17, at 4 pm.
The original schedule of the second round that was released Wednesday, August 13, had DLSU taking on ADMU on August 23, Saturday, at the Mall of Asia Arena.

The Blue Eagles, meanwhile, are coming off a come-from-behind win over the UE Red Warriors, and top the league standings at 6-1

(FIBA U-17 Basketball) Comeback hopes fall short as Batang Gilas yields to Argentina
MANILA, Philippines - A come-from-behind win looked very achievable when the Batang Gilas national youth team came charging late in the fourth period against Argentina.
But victory still eluded the Philippines as they dropped their 5th straight game, 84-71, in the FIBA Under-17 World Championship in Dubai on Thursday, August 14.
After Argentina scored 6 straight points to open the final canto, Batang Gilas showed their grit and determination to get that first win by mounting a 12-0 burst to turn a 74-52 deficit midway through the fourth to just a manageable 74-64 disadvantage nearing the two-minute mark.

MANILA, Philippines – For every beating the Batang Gilas national youth team had endured for the past week in the FIBA Under-17 World Championship in Dubai, they finally had their vindication.
The Philippines poured all of its frustrations over the successive losses and gave everything they had left in the tank on Saturday, August 16 to batter hosts United Arab Emirates (UAE), 115-51, and end their campaign with their only win in 7 games to finish 15th out of the 16 participating countries.

MANILA, Philippines - When the UE Red Warriors and UP Fighting Maroons last dueled in the first round of UAAP Season 77, University of the East easily took care of their opponents.

"We have a lot of unsung heroes in our team. (Tennis) Past US Open champs Djokovic, Federer seeded 1-2
NEW YORK (AP) -- Top-ranked Novak Djokovic is seeded No. 1 for the U.S. Open, and five-time champion Roger Federer is No. 2, meaning they could meet only in the final.
Djokovic beat Federer for the title at Wimbledon last month.
The U.S. Tennis Association followed this week's ATP rankings in announcing the seedings Tuesday
Federer moved up one spot from his No. 3 ranking because 2013 champion Rafael Nadal withdrew from the year's last Grand Slam tournament with an injured right wrist. The 33-year-old Federer is seeded at the U.S. Open for the 14th consecutive year, tied with Ivan Lendl for the longest streak, trailing only Jimmy Connors' record of 18.

(FIBA U-18 Asia Basketball) China, Korea win FIBA Asia U18 openers
MANILA, Philippines – Favored teams China, Korea, Japan, and Taiwan opened their accounts well on day one of the 2014 FIBA Asia U18 Championships, while the Philippines watched intently from the sidelines. Batang Gilas gets its first taste of the competition Wednesday, August 20 against Jordan.
CHINA over MALAYSIA, 95-55
Zhao Rui torched the net with 6 triples on his way to 28 points as China overpowered Malaysia to open the tournament. The star point guard for the Big Red Machine also had 6 rebounds and 6 assists as coach Fan Bin’s three-peat seeking campaign began. 6’10 Zou Yuchen also did well, putting up 15 points and 8 boards for the victors.
Superstar big man Zhou Qi played just 15 minutes, registering 8 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 blocks. Malaysia, meanwhile, was led by the 14 points and 4 treys of Wee Joon Lock, while Ting Chun Hong added 9 markers and 2 steals.
KOREA over JORDAN, 95-38
Jordan stayed within striking distance for one whole half before Korea outscored them, 66-20, in the last two periods to win in convincing fashion. As expected, Byeon Jun-Hyeong led the Koreans with 15 points on top of 4 steals, while Jeon Hyun-Woo added 14 markers, 4 boards, and 5 swipes.
Big men Kim Kyung-Won and Song Kyo-Chang, both 6’7, combined for 20 points, 20 rebounds, 10 steals, and 6 blocks to compound Korea’s dominance. On the other end, Khaled Abu-Aboud paced Jordan with 8 points, 6 rebounds, and 1 rejection.
JAPAN over IRAQ, 81-62
Ryosuke Motomura, Akito Uchida, and Yuki Mikami combined to make 10 three-pointers as Japan scrambled in the fourth quarter to break the game open and get by the Iraqis. Ryogo Sumino was also impressive, tossing in 11 points while 6’7 Taiga Watanabe added 10 rebounds, 3 steals, and 3 blocked shots. Iraq, meanwhile enjoyed 25 points from Jassam Al-Saadi.
KAZAKHSTAN over KUWAIT, 85-75
Kuwait stuck close to the Kazkhs for the entire game, but the Middle Eastern team just couldn’t contain the dynamic duo of Balaby Agabek and Leonid Kachaev, who paired up for 45 points. Agabek, Kazakhstan’s 6’1 starting shooting guard, also collared 14 rebounds while making 4 treys. 6’7 Alexander Danilchenko also did well with 10 markers and 13 boards.
Kuwait enjoyed 34 points from Hamad Hasan, who also tallied 10 boards and 6 dimes. Moustafa Matwali, meanwhile, had 13 points, 12 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals, and 2 blocks of his own.
QATAR over INDIA, 86-73
Abdulrahman Saad dropped a huge 40-point game on the Indians to lead the undermanned Qataris to its first win of the tourney. Saad played practically the entire game, shooting 16/33 from the field while also grabbing 6 rebounds and handing out 8 assists. He was effectively backstopped by 6’6 Abdelrahman Abdelhaleem, who registered 26 points on 11/21 FG shooting while also adding 10 boards.
Five players scored in double-figures for coach Jora Singh’s Indian quintet, led by the 20 markers of Mahipal Singh, but even those weren’t enough to tow the SABA champs to victory. Qatar is still awaiting four players to join the team — two are still waiting to clear eligibility while two others are still on vacation.
TAIWAN over HONG KONG, 106-83
Sun Yung-Chen and Tseng Po-Yu combined to score 50 points, leading Taiwan past a game Hong Kong squad. Sun also added 12 rebounds and 2 steals while star guard Tu Su-Han shot in 4 triples on his way to 16 markers, 5 boards, 4 assists, and 2 swipes. As for Hong Kong, Yee Fu Ho and Ka Chung On scored 21 apiece in the loss.

Ravena finished with 16 points, 8 rebounds, and 7 assists, but did most of his damage in the final quarter where he totaled 9 markers and hit the biggest shot of the night. Chris Newsome also had a productive game, finishing with 23 points and 6 boards while going 13-of-21 from the free throw line.

(FIBA U-18 Asia Basketball) China remains undefeated, Batang Gilas falls in FIBA Asia U18
MANILA, Philippines – The Philippines fell big time to a taller and speedier Korean side on Day 3 of the 2014 FIBA Asia U18 Championships. In other developments, China, Iran, and Taiwan also continued undefeated.
KOREA over PHILIPPINES, 87-69
Radge Tongco continued to be Batang Gilas’s top offensive option, scoring 24 points on the strength of 5 triples, but Korea just had more weapons.
With superior size and athleticism, coach Kim Seung-Hwan’s crew frustrated the Filipinos at every turn and eventually opened things up in the fourth quarter. Twin towers Kim Kyung-Won and Song Kyo-Chang (both 6’7) paired up for 34 points and 23 rebounds to underscore Korea’s inside edge. Kim also blocked 7 shots to pad his stat-line, Jeon Hyun-Woo and Byeon Jun-Hyeong hit crucial treys to keep the Pinoys at bay the entire game.
Korea tops Group B with a 2-0 record even as the Philippine team falls to 1-1.
CHINA over INDIA, 100-40
As expected, the Chinese ran roughshod over the Indians to close out play in Group A. China, moving up undefeated to the second round, was led by Zhou Qi and Zou Yuchen, who tallied 21 and 19 points respectively. Three other Chinese also broke the double-digit barrier as Wang Zhengbo, Zhao Rui, and Zuo Zhennian each dropped at least 10 markers.
Zhao Rui was the best all-around player, grabbing 8 boards, handing out 11 assists, and getting 3 steals. As for India, Gurvinder Gill and Narender Singh each scored 13 points in a losing effort.
China sweeps the group and is heavily favored in the second round as India drops out of the race.
TAIWAN over JAPAN, 84-75
Taiwan leaned on a strong third quarter to open things up and keep the Japanese at bay for its third win in as many games. The two Tsengs – Tseng Po-Yu and Tseng Pin-Fu – paced the victors with 20 and 17 points respectively and a combined 18 rebounds.
Taiwan’s defense was sterling, forcing 17 Japanese turnovers. Lin Ming-Yi, Taiwan’s diminutive playmaker, was the bulwark of the winners’ defense, netting 5 swipes on top of his 16 points, 7 assists, and 5 rebounds.
6’7 Taiga Watanabe tried to carry the fight for Team Hayabusa with 16 points and 12 rebounds, while Akito Uchida and Yuki Mikami paired up to drill 7 threes in Japan’s losing cause.
Taiwan earns a 3-0 slate in group play while the Japanese settle for a 2-1 card heading to the second round.
HONG KONG over IRAQ, 94-86
The Iraqis were favored in this one and, for the most part, they held sway. Things turned sour, however, when Hong Kong found its mark in the final frame and outscored Iraq, 31-18.
Coach Kai Mo Ng leaned on the hot shooting of Yee Fu Ho and Ka Chung On to power his team’s counterattack in the fourth quarter. That duo combined for 8 of Hong Kong’s 9 treys and a total of 55 points. 6’3 center Wai Hang Yip also did well, tossing in 21 points along with 4 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals as the victors overcame a huge 25-52 rebounding disparity.
Iraq just wasn’t able to close out after leading by as many as 18 points in the first half. Jassam Al-Saadi paced the Iraqis with 29 points, 11 rebounds, and 3 steals, but he did commit 8 turnovers, the same number also committed by point guard Mohammad Al-Fahham. This result effectively boots Iraq out of contention and keeps Hong Kong’s hopes alive.
MALAYSIA over QATAR, 78-70
It was a great time for Malaysia to notch its first win in the tournament as its improbable triumph over Qatar propelled the SEABA side to the next round of competitions while giving India the boot. Though Qatar jumped out to an early 10-point lead in the first canto, Malaysia persisted and took the lead in the second half. Coach Yong Kian Ann’s wards utilized better outside shooting (33% from beyond the arc) to frustrate Qatar, which made just 1 three-pointer out of 13 attempts.
Wee Joon Lock led the way for Malaysia with 5 triples, scoring a total of 28 points. He was effectively backstopped by Ting Chun Hong, who registered 10 points, 9 boards, and 3 steals.
Over on the hosts’ side, Abdulrahman Saad and Mohammad Al-Shawaqfeh scored 28 and 14 points respectively. Malaysia moves on to Group E with a 1-1 slate, while Qatar carries a 0-2 record.
IRAN over KAZAKHSTAN, 81-56
The Kazakhs gave Iran a bit of a scare in the first quarter before the latter broke the game open in the second period and beyond.
As expected, Mohammad Yousofvand recorded an impressive line – 22 points, 11 rebounds, 3 steals, and 1 block – to lead Team Melli, which now advances to the second round undefeated in two matches. Navid Rezaeifar also did well, contributing 19 points, 4 boards, 4 dimes, and 2 swipes.
Only one player scored in double-figures for the losing team – Alexandr Danilchenko, who managed to tally 11 markers on 4/4 FG shooting, mostly in garbage time. Kazakhstan also advances to Group F with a 1-1 slate.

(FIBA U-18 Asia Basketball) Batang Gilas bows to China in 42-point blowout

The Chinese had no remorse for the Batang Gilas national youth team who was overcome from the get go on their way to a 44-25 halftime advantage.
Early on, the struggles were already clear for Batang Gilas as they were outscored 22-10 in the second frame. In the first two quarters, their shooting woes were brought to fore with an 11-of-47 field goal shooting clip and going one-of-13 from long distance.
