(UAAP Volleyball) Lady Eagles crush UE to clinch third spot

MANILA, Philippines - Even a guaranteed ticket to the semifinals did not slow Ateneo de Manila University as they destroyed a hapless University of the East side, 25-17, 25-12, 25-22, in the 76th UAAP Women's Volleyball tournament, Saturday, February 8, at The Arena in San Juan City.

Still displaying her usual lethal form in a practically non-bearing game against two teams that had contrasting fates this year, Alyssa Valdez rose above all as she once again led the Lady Eagles with her 20 markers to take their 8th win this season and formally lock themselves third in the table with eight win in their 12 games so far.

(UAAP Volleyball) La Salle stays hot as they nip UST in straight sets

MANILA, Philippines - De La Salle University showed no mercy against the struggling University of Santo Tomas as they trooped to their 12th win this year courtesy of a 25-23, 25-19, 25-19 victory in the 76th UAAP Women's Volleyball tournament, Saturday, February 8, at The Arena in San Juan City.

The defending champs had to buck a tentative start, though, as they barely clawed their way past the Golden Tigresses in the opening set and had to weather a resolute UST squad in the second and third to stay unbeaten in 28 UAAP games.

(UAAP Volleyball) UP stuns FEU, gives Adamson edge in Final Four race

MANILA, Philippines - Already out of contention this season, University of the Philippines pulled off what could be the biggest upset this year as they tamed Far Eastern University, 26-24, 25-16, 16-25, 25-19, in the 76th UAAP Women's Volleyball tournament on Sunday, February 9, at The Arena in San Juan City.

With only one playoffs slot up for grabs, the loss comes as a double black eye for the Lady Tamaraws as they allowed Adamson University to overtake them for fourth place in the table while the Maroons take only their second win in 13 outings this season.

(UFC) Former UFC Middleweight Kingpin Anderson Silva Already Back in the Gym Training

A month and a half after suffering a severely broken leg, former UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva is already back in the gym and training.

As gruesome and grizzly as Silva’s broken leg looked in his fight with Chris Weidman at UFC 168, as harrowing as the raw footage of the incident was in UFC president Dana White’s recent video blog, the former UFC middleweight champion simply suffered a broken bone that will heal, and it has been improving at light speed.

According to a UFC report, Silva was recently photographed at his Muay Thai College in Torrence, Calif., while lifting weights, and walking down stairs without the assistance of crutches.

(UFC) Jose Aldo vs. Anthony Pettis UFC Superfight Doesn't Have to Happen at Lightweight

Talk of a UFC superfight between featherweight champion Jose Aldo and lightweight titleholder Anthony Pettis has hit a fever pitch recently.

The two had intended to do the fight once before, with Pettis dropping down to challenge Aldo at 145 pounds.

Recent talk about once again trying to put the two together in the Octagon has centered on Aldo's desire to move up in weight and fight at 155 pounds. Should that happen, UFC president Dana White has gone on record with a plan that would include Aldo vacating his belt at 145 pounds.

(Winter Olympics) Martinez, lone Winter Olympic bet of the Philippines, enters medal round in Sochi

WHAT a debut for the Philippines!

With a score of 64.81 in the short program, lone Philippine bet Michael Christian Martinez advanced to the medal round of the men’s figure skating competition in the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi on Thursday night.

The 17-year old made history as the first Filipino and the first Southeast Asian to perform at the Men’s Figure Skating in the Olympics - then took his quest a step further with an impressive routine despite the weight of the controversy that his participation has stirred back home.

Martinez eventually finished 19th out of the 24 who qualified for the free skate program set late Friday evening (Manila time) where the podium finishers will finally be determined.
