(SEA Games) Tacloban native Franco brings cheer to flood victims with gold in SEA Games karate
TACLOBAN native Niño Franco got karatedo its first gold medal in the 2013 Southeast Asian Games on Saturday in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar.
An inspired Franco edged out a Brunei karateka, 8-6, on Saturday in the men’s individual kumite 55kg to claim the gold medal for the Philippines.
It was a sweet victory for Franco, whose family survived super typhoon ‘Yolanda’ that wrecked Tacloban and several parts of the Visayas region.
According to Philippine Karatedo Federation secretary general Raymond Lee Reyes, Franco couldn’t contact his family while in the middle of training in Iran for the SEA Games days after Yolanda struck his hometown.
Fortunately for Franco, his family was safe.
“Para ito sa mga Taclobanon at sa mga tiga-Leyte at Samar,” said the 29-year-old Franco.
Mae Soriano settled for the silver medal of the women’s individual kumite 55kg after bowing in the finals against a Malaysian foe.
Joanna Mae Ylanan won a bronze medal.

(SEA Games) Philippines back in seventh place as Thailand vaults on top
THE Philippines came through with its most productive gold haul so far in the 27th Southeast Asian Games by winning four on Saturday to move back at seventh place in the medal standings.
Thanks to the heroic stand of the boxing team, the country’s delegation now has a total of seven gold medals to move past Cambodia.
Boxers Mark Anthony Barriga, Mario Fernandez, and Josie Gabuco, won golds in their respective weight classes, while karateka Niño Franco also did the same in his event as the four make up for a gold-less campaign by the Filipinos on Friday that saw them slipped to as low as eight spot.
Team Philippines has also collected 11 silver medals, four of which came from boxing also on Saturday albeit in controversial fashion, and 15 bronzes on the ninth day of competitions.
Cambodia is now logged at eight place with four golds, along with six silvers, and 11 bronzes.
Meanwhile, perennial overall champion Thailand has finally taken over the top spot from host Myanmar after collecting 33 golds, 30 silvers, and 30 bronzes. The host country dropped to second after a week of being at no. 1 with a total medal of 31-29-28 (gold-silver-bronze).
Indonesia is in third with 30-40-34, followed by Vietnam (29-23-33), and Malaysia (18-12-31). Singapore occupies sixth place with 12-10-19, five gold medals more than the Philippines.
Laos is at ninth spot with 2-5-18, followed by Brunei (1-1-3).
Timor Leste won its first medal, a bronze, on Saturday.
