(Football) Messi's Golden Shoe is a symbol of his greatness - but also proves his need for rest

BARCELONA -- Lionel Messi was all smiles. Yet another award in his hands, the Argentine attacker looked positive and upbeat as he accepted his latest honor: the European Golden Shoe.

This most recent prize, however, came shrouded in symbolism: not only does it represent his supreme scoring prowess (the award is for most league goals - 46 - in a single season across Europe in 2012-13), but it also serves as a reminder that, despite his brilliance, Messi is a mere mortal whose body was pushed to the limits in pursuit of such accolades and records.

(Boxing) Pacquiao, Rios easily make weight

MACAU – Manny Pacquiao and Brandon Rios both came below the welterweight limit for their 12-round showdown on Sunday.

Rios was the first to tip the scales at 146 and ½ lbs, before Pacquiao followed suit and made it at 145 lbs. during the official weigh-in Saturday morning before a crowd of about a thousand at the Cotai Arena here.

The American from Oxnard, California wore a blue baseball cap over white shirt and green track suit, while a huge tattooed eagle adorned his left chest. He gamely played with the audience when he was loudly jeered shortly after the traditional staredown between the two fighters.

Pacquiao meanwhile, was in an all-blue track suit, but wore a yellow shirt inside that has the words `The Champ Knows’ prominently printed in front. Chants of Manny! Manny! Manny! greeted the eight-time world champion before and after he made weight.

Rookie Romeo erupts for 34 points as GlobalPort beats Air 21

MANILA, Philippines – Rookie Terrence Romeo exploded for 34 points to lead GlobalPort to a 114-100 win over Air 21 in the 2014 PLDT MyDSL Philippine Cup Saturday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Romeo, the fifth overall pick, scored 14 of his total output in the third quarter where the Batang Pier started to pull away.
“I’m just stick to the game plan. I just do what they ask me to do,” said Romeo, who went six-of-nine from long range and also had six rebounds and three assists in 32 minutes.
“He (Romeo) is special, everybody knows that even when he was still in the UAAP,” said GlobalPort coach Richie Ticzon, who picked up his first win after his team absorbed an 87-97 setback at the hands of Petron Blaze in his head coaching debut last Wednesday.
The former Far Eastern U guard Romeo sparked GlobalPort’s run late in the third quarter and denied Air 21′s comeback bid as well with five unanswered points that extended Batang Pier’s advantage back to 16, 110-94, with only 1:56 left.
Joseph Yeo paced the Express, who fell to 0-2, in scoring with 24 points while veteran center Asi Taulava had 21 points and 15 rebounds and at one point carried his team offensively in the final frame.
