(NBA) Wizards land Marcin Gortat in trade with Suns

After completing a five-player trade with the Washington Wizards, the Phoenix Suns could have stockpiled four first-round picks in the talent-deep 2014 NBA draft.

The Suns traded starting center Marcin Gortat, Shannon Brown, Malcolm Lee, Kendall Marshall and a 2014 first-round pick to the Wizards for the expiring contract of Emeka Okafor and a protected 2014 first-round pick.

(NBA) Warriors waive 3, extend contracts of 3 others

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) -- Before signing center Andrew Bogut to a contract extension Friday, the Golden State Warriors waived three training camp invitees and extended the contracts of three regulars.

The Warriors waived guard Seth Curry, center Dewayne Dedmon and forward Joe Alexander. They also exercised the fourth-year contract option on shooting guard Klay Thompson and the third-year contract options on forward Harrison Barnes and center Festus Ezeli for the 2014-15 season, as expected.

(Football) La Liga Preview: Barcelona - Real Madrid

Barcelona will aim to beat arch-rival Real Madrid in La Liga for the first time in almost two years in Saturday's much-anticipated Clasico.

The Catalan giant last won a league fixture against Real Madrid in December 2011, as the club came from behind to win 3-1 in the Spanish capital.

Although Copa del Rey and Supercopa wins have since followed, Barca will be determined to end a run that has seen the club take just one point from its last three league meetings with Madrid.

Gerardo Martino's table-topping team is the only side to avoid defeat in La Liga this term, having recorded eight wins and one draw.

The club was held to a goalless stalemate at Osasuna last week and drew with AC Milan in Italy in midweek, but will hope a return to Camp Nou - where the team has won its last 19 Liga matches - helps it return to winning ways.

Real Madrid sits third in La Liga, three points adrift of Barca, with the club's only loss of the season coming against Atletico Madrid at the end of September.

Both sides have new stars keen to make an impact in their first Clasico - Neymar in Barca's case, and Gareth Bale, Isco and Asier Illarramendi for Madrid - while coaches Martino and Carlo Ancelotti will also experience their first taste of Spain's fiercest derby.

While much attention will focus on the impact of Neymar and Bale - the latter having returned from a back injury against Malaga on Saturday - Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are more than likely to steal the show.

Widely regarded as the two best players on the planet, both have made an outstanding start to the current campaign, with Ronaldo's brace in a 2-1 Champions League win over Juventus on Wednesday taking him to 15 goals from 12 appearances this season.

Four-time world player of the year Messi, meanwhile, has 12 goals in nine outings.

Madrid will be without midfielder Xabi Alonso, despite him returning to training following a broken foot, while Barcelona defender Jordi Alba (hamstring) will also miss the fixture.

Historically, Real Madrid has shaded the clash, winning 90 of the 224 competitive matches, with Barcelona winning 86.

(Football) Neymar leads Barcelona to 2-1 win over Madrid

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) -- Neymar scored one goal and set up Alexis Sanchez's winning chip shot in the 78th minute, carrying Barcelona past Real Madrid 2-1 in the first ''clasico'' since the defending champions added Neymar and Real signed Gareth Bale.

With Lionel Messi oddly quiet for Barcelona, Neymar opened the scoring in the 19th minute from close range after a pass from Andres Iniesta. Two minutes earlier, Neymar struck the ball into the arms of Madrid goalkeeper Diego Lopez with the game's first shot.

''Scoring a goal in a clasico is very special,'' Neymar said. ''It's a game that everyone wants to play. It was like a dream come true.''

Neymar received an ovation when he was substituted with six minutes to go after a match in which the Brazilian striker clearly outshone Bale.

Neymar joined Barcelona this offseason for $76 million, a player who could represent the team's future in a distant post-Messi era. Bale, an attacking midfielder from Wales, signed with Real Madrid for a sum reported variously at $120 million and $132 million.

Barcelona coach Gerardo Martino, also making his clasico debut, was careful not to overpraise Neymar, while also giving credit to Messi for his work in defense.

''The transcendence of this game and the goal he scored magnified the level of his performance,'' Martino said about Neymar. ''But I think he has had better games than tonight. As far as what (Messi) did for the team to recover the ball, I give him a superlative mark.''

Bale failed to produce a shot on goal before being replaced by Karim Benzema with a half hour to go. Bale was limited to a pair of harmless long attempts that sailed high as Madrid failed to muster a shot on target until a minute before halftime.

Bale was making his second start of the season since being hampered by muscle injuries, but didn't prove effective in attack with Cristiano Ronaldo.

Benzema hit the woodwork before Sanchez took Neymar's pass and sealed the victory with an exquisite chip. Substitute Jese Rodriguez scored for Madrid in injury time on a counterattack.

Barcelona now has nine victories and one draw in the Spanish league, lifting it four points ahead of Atletico Madrid, which hosts Real Betis on Sunday.

Madrid is now six points back amid fresh doubts about the team under new coach Carlo Ancelotti following losses to both its league challengers. It lost 1-0 to Atletico last month.

''I think we showed good football in front of a fantastic team,'' Ancelotti said after his first clasico. ''Of course, we want to win this kind of game but at this moment it was a good test. We are improving.''

(NBA) Heat preparing for another ring celebration

MIAMI (AP) -- By now, the Miami Heat know a thing or two about planning championship celebrations.

They're getting a fair amount of practice.

A pair of 3D videos that will turn the court into a theater screen and even the infamous yellow rope - which got attention for all the wrong reasons in Game 6 of last season's NBA Finals against San Antonio - will be part of the show Tuesday when the Heat distribute their newest championship rings and raise another commemorative banner to the rafters before the team's season-opener against the Chicago Bulls.

Pacers fans can only hope he's right.

Hours after the Pacers announced Granger would miss three weeks with a muscle strain, he walked out of practice with a smile and insisted this injury is nothing like the one that kept him out of action most of last season.

(NBA) Lakers to begin season without Kobe Bryant for first time in seven years

LOS ANGELES – Kobe Bryant watched the end of the Los Angeles Lakers' final preseason practice through a training room window while running on an anti-gravity treadmill. When reporters turned to look at him, Bryant quickly closed the blinds and kept running.

For the first time since 2006, the Lakers will open the season without Bryant on the floor when they face the Los Angeles Clippers Tuesday night. And no one can say for sure when Bryant, who is recovering from Achilles surgery, will rejoin his teammates.

(UFC-MMA) Lyoto Machida Sees Immediate Results in UFC Middleweight Debut

Former light heavyweight title contender Lyoto Machida made his long awaited middleweight debut at UFC Fight Night 30 in Manchester, England, on Saturday night and saw immediate results, knocking out good friend Mark Munoz in the opening round.

Machida looked light on his feet as he stalked Munoz around the cage in the opening minutes before he set up the finish, catching Munoz with a kick to the body that he followed up with a left head kick, knocking him out.

“It's very hard for me. I did a diet for one month, very strict diet, but I got it,” Machida said about the weight cut.

The Brazilian stayed at 205 pounds for so long out of respect for teammate and former middleweight champion Anderson Silva, but with Chris Weidman the current champion, it was time for the 35-year-old to make the drop and he looked comfortable in the Octagon.

“I'll stay at 185 (pounds),” Machida revealed. “My bosses Dana White and Lorenzo Fertitta, they decide everything. If they ask me to fight at 205 again, I'll do it.”

The victory opens plenty of doors for “The Dragon,” who is now where he belongs, and becomes the bigger guy in the division, which may allow him to be more aggressive in his fights as he now plots his way to a shot at the title, quite possibly in 2014.

“I'm back to my best; I'm back to my real Karate,” Machida said on the UFC Post-Fight Show on Fox Sports 2. “I trained well for this fight. I want to be champion. I want the belt. I have to chase the belt.”
