Manny Pacquiao agrees to extension with Top Rank through 2016

Manny Pacquiao signed a contract extension with Top Rank on Tuesday that will likely keep him with the promotional company of the remainder of his illustrious career.

The deal that Pacquiao signed will take him through Dec. 31, 2016, when he will be 38 years old. Top Rank CEO Bob Arum told Yahoo Sports that the contract will continue "as usual," meaning two fights a year, including one in the spring and one in the fall.

Pacquiao plans next to fight in November in Macau, China. Juan Manuel Marquez, coming off of a big win over Mike Alvarado on Saturday, will be offered the fight. If he declines, Top Rank plans to pursue Ruslan Provodnikov.

"These guys are like family to me," Arum said. "We had discussed this for a while and I was always sure it would get done. Now that it's been signed and is formally signed, it puts a wrap on it and it feels good to know we'll be together for another two years."

Arum said he remained open to making a fight with pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather and said the contract with Pacquiao does not preclude it. He said if the fight occurs before the end of 2015, it could be on both Showtime and HBO, as was the 2002 pay-per-view match between Mike Tyson, who was then exclusively with Showtime, and Lennox Lewis, who was exclusively with HBO.

Mayweather is under contract with Showtime and has three more fights remaining on the six-fight deal he signed with the company in 2013.

"I'm not going to worry about something I can't bring to bear," Arum said of a potential Pacquiao-Mayweather fight. "We want to fight him and we're willing to discuss it at any point. There are two ways to go here. One is to do a Mayweather fight with both HBO and Showtime involved, as they did with Lewis-Tyson, as I understand Mayweather is under contract to Showtime through 2015. The companies could come together and put on the show.

"Or, the other alternative is, if Floyd wanted to fight Manny in 2016, he could return to HBO and we could do it there."

A difficulty making the fight obviously is the relationship between Arum and Mayweather and Arum and Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer, who has repeatedly said he will no longer do business with Arum. Mayweather has worked with Golden Boy exclusivley since 2007, but said he is loyal to Schaefer and not the company.

There is a rift between Schaefer and Golden Boy president Oscar De La Hoya, which could result in two separate companies. Arum recently mended fences with De La Hoya.

"I could work very easily with Oscar and we could put on fights together with guys who are under contract to him and Golden Boy," Arum said. "I never said I wouldn't deal with Schaefer; he said he wouldn't work with me. But that's one guy. One. I can work with Oscar no problem."

As an example, Arum said that if it turns out that Amir Khan winds up under contract to Golden Boy run by De La Hoya, Khan could be a possibility for a Pacquiao opponent as soon as this year.

Donaire defeats Vetyeka by
controversial technical decision

Nonito Donaire (33-2, 21 KO’s) defeated WBA Super World featherweight champion Simpiwe Vetyeka (26-3, 16 KO’s) by a very controversial 4 round technical decision on Saturday night at the Cotai Arena, Venetian Resort, Macao,Macao S.A.R., China. Donaire suffered a cut in the 1st round from what appeared to be a right hand that that clipped him while he was trying to move out of range. Donaire complained that he couldn’t see out of the cut and this eventually resulted in the fight being stopped.

They said it was from a head-butt. However, there was no clash of heads. Instead of a head clash, Donaire was nailed by a right hand on his left eye and this caused him to go down.
In slow motion replay it shows that Donaire was cut from a punch rather than a head clash, so the referee blew the call in saying it was from a head clash. If he had ruled it
correctly than Vetyeka would have won the fight because Donaire wouldn’t have been able to continue. So in other words, Vetyeka got jobbed in this fight.

Donaire knocked Vetyeka down with a left hook in the 4th round. The shot caught
Vetyeka when he was bent forward to where he didn’t see the shot. However, he wasn’t hurt from the punch and he continued to fight back.

The final judges scores were 40-36, 40-36, and 40-36.

What’s interesting about this fight is that it was allowed to go long enough for it to be an
official fight when it could have been stopped in the 2nd or 3rd rounds. But instead of was permitted to go just long enough for it to be official so that a decision could be rendered.

After the fight, Donaire said “I’m going to give Vetyeka a rematch because I don’t want to win like this.”

The fight was still very much in doubt as Vetyeka was still catching Donaire with shots
in the 4th round. The way the fight was going, I think Vetyeka was going to beat Donaire
because he had no problems landing his shots and he seemed the more comfortable fighter in there. Donaire was landing an occasional big
shot, but he was getting nailed a lot and it just looked like it was only going to be a matter of time before Vetyeka got to Donaire.

Donaire Jr defeats Vetyeka, wins featherweight title

MACAU – From the opening bell, Nonito Donaire Jr. looked intent to silence every detractor who had said he was not the in-ring executioner he was in the lower weights. He promised to be more versatile against IBF featherweight titleholder Simpiwe Vetyeka when they met on Saturday, May 31 at the Venetian Resort in Macau, and he was, landing jabs and overhand rights while not relying as much on his trademark left hooks.

And then all hell broke out.

A heartbeat after the bell for the first round rang, Donaire sank to the floor with blood streaming from his left eye. Donaire complained to referee Luis Pabon who seemed as overwhelmed by the situation as any professional could’ve been.

If he stopped the fight there, the main event at the Venetian Macau would’ve ended in an accidental foul technical draw, a most unsavory ending in an emerging boxing market still trying to establish itself.

Pabon did what he felt to be the right thing – he let the fight continue until one second into the fifth round, enacting the technical decision rule that allowed a fight to be decided prematurely.

That was just enough time for Donaire to separate himself on the scorecards from Vetyeka, who was making the first defense of the title he won with a sixth round technical knockout of Chris John in December.

Donaire weathered several damaging headbutts in round two before dropping wobbling Vetyeka with an overhand right in the third stanza. Donaire then put his biggest imprint on the fight in round four, dropping the South African Vetyeka with a left hook halfway into the round.

Vetyeka, 33, remained wily and survived but was hurt with another big left hook near the end of the fourth round. With blood streaming down his face, the end was nigh for Donaire and the referee knew it.

The fight was stopped and the referee collected the scorecards, all three of which read 49-46 for Donaire Jr., who wins his fifth world title in as many weight classes, earning him entry into an exclusive club that includes Manny Pacquiao, Floyd Mayweather Jr, Thomas Hearns and Sugar Ray Leonard.

Still, the unsavory, inconclusive ending leaves a bitter taste in Donaire's mouth which isn't blood.

"I got head butted in the first round, the referee wanted to stop it," said Donaire, who improves to 33-2 (21 knockouts). "He asked if I could see, I said I couldn’t see. He said 'should I stop it' and I didn’t want to stop it. I knew I didn’t have much time to do what I wanted to do in the fight.

"I couldn’t see on the right side, it was blurring. I couldn’t see his right hand where his power comes from. After the fourth round I couldn’t go any further."

"I promised I'd give him a rematch, it's an unfinished victory."

Vetyeka, 33, says he doesn't believe the cut was caused by a headbutt but rather a punch, which would've ended the fight by TKO in his favor. Vetyeka hangs onto hope that Donaire comes through with his promise for a rematch.

"He promised me a rematch and I hope that we get that," said Vetyeka (26-3, 16 KOs).

Bob Arum, who promoted the event under his Top Rank company, said a rematch between Donaire and Vetyeka would be his first priority before any other Donaire fights could be considered.

"You don’t like to see a fight end early but he’s the champion and he’s a real man and he said he didn’t like to win the title that way so he’s going to give the South African kid a rematch," said Arum.

Arum said that, if Manny Pacquiao's November 23 date ends up in Macau, he would consider hosting the rematch on that undercard. If that happened, it'd be the first time the two best Filipino fighters of this generation fought on the same card.

"I think if Pacquiao fight ends up here, why wouldn’t we add that to the card in addition to Zou Shiming’s title fight plus another fight. It’d be one of the greatest cards that they’re not going to top for years, no matter what happens with boxing in Asia."

Manny Pacquiao is longest reigning fighter in RING’s P4P list

Filipino boxing superstar Manny Pacman Pacquiao continues to make the Philippines proud even when he is not actually fighting in the boxing ring.

According to reports, the eight-division boxing champion Pacquiao is currently the longest reigning fighter in RING Magazine’s mythical pound-for-pound list, which values a boxer’s standing in relation to fighters of different weight classes.

The Ring Magazine said Pacquiao has been among the world’s best pound-for-pound fighters for 548 weeks, roughly over 10 years. In the current ranking of the pound for pound list, the congressman from the lone district of Sarangani is listed as the 4th best fighter in the world behind Floyd Mayweather Jr., Andre Ward and Wladimir Klitschko.

Taking the second spot as the longest reigning fighter in RING’s P4P list is ironically Pacquiao’s nemesis Juan Manuel Marquez. Marquez, who knocked out Pacquiao in 2012, has been on the list for 373 weeks (7 years).

The controversial Mayweather is on the top 10 for 141 weeks.

Mayweather has been on the list since 2007, but dropped out of the ranking after he took a brief retirement from professional boxing following his split decision win over Oscar de la Hoya.

Being ranked in the pound for pound list in Ring Magazine is a huge honor since the magazine is considered as the the bible of boxing. The Ring Magazine ranked the boxers based on the boxers’ most recent victories, performances, and track record, including the quality of opposition they have faced.

Aside from being one of the top boxers in the world today, the Forbes magazine has also recently declared Pacquiao as the 11th highest-paid athlete in the world for 2014; he ranked 13th last year.

According to reports, Pacquiao earned $41 million from his two fights against Brandon Rios and Timothy Bradley, and $800,000 from endorsements. The widely popular magazine said while both fights are both disappointments in pay-per-view, the fighting congressman from the lone district of Sarangani still earned $41 million, including Philippine TV money, from the two bouts.

Pacquiao will face New Yorker Algieri next

MANILA, Philippines - It’s official: Manny Pacquiao will face New Yorker Chris Algieri on Saturday, November 22 (Sunday PH time) in Macau.

ESPN.com reports that WBO welterweight titleholder Manny Pacquiao will face WBO junior welterweight titleholder at the Venetian Resort in Macau as Pacquiao fights in Asia for the first time since his victory over Brandon Rios in November of 2013.

"We have a deal,” Top Rank promoter Bob Arum told ESPN. “On my end, it wasn't a hard deal at all. I came up pretty much with what they were looking for and then [Algieri’s promoters Joe Deguardia and Artie Pellulo] had to sit down with Algieri and cut it up fairly amongst themselves."

Algieri (20-0, 8 knockouts) of Huntington, N.Y. rose from anonymity last month, defeating the heavily favored Ruslan Provodnikov to win a portion of the 140 pound championship. The 30-year-old boxing stylist is also a former world kickboxing champion and obtained his pre-med undergraduate degree from Stony Brook University his masters degree from New York Institute of Technology.

"He's wants the fight and has no problem going up in weight,” said Algieri’s promoter DeGuardia. “He wants the welterweight championship. He wants challenges. He loves the idea. He wanted to fight for another championship and he loves that he is fighting Manny Pacquiao for it. He looks as Manny as an elite of the game. He wants to climb another mountain. If he wins this fight, you have the start of another era."

Terms of the deal were not disclosed but it’s believed Algieri will earn more than $1 million - or ten times the $100,000 he made for the split decision win over Provodnikov.

Pacquiao (56-5-2, 38 KOs) of General Santos City, Philippines has been resurgent since avenging his controversial decision loss to Timothy Bradley with a dominant victory in April. Pacquiao has now won two straight since his sixth-round knockout defeat to Juan Manuel Marquez in December of 2012.

"Manny is 100 percent for it," Arum said. "I told him I was coming along with it. He said Algieri seems like a nice young man and he saw his fight with Provodnikov. Manny said he thought it would be a good fight and he was OK with fighting Algieri."
