The Manila Jockey Club — the first racing club in Southeast Asia — was formed in the summer of 1867 by a group of racing aficionados led by Jose de la Gandara y Navarro, then Spanish General of the Philippines. Its original founders were from Manila’s affluent Filipino, Spanish and English families in the 19th century such as the Ayalas, Zobels, Tuazons, Elizaldes and Nietos.

oh yes... matagal na po yang mga racing clubs na yan.. before there were two race tracks namely the San Lazaro Hippodrome and the Ata. Ana Race Park... nabili ni SM ang San Lazaro property located near the Dimasalang Area so yun at nagtayo naman sa Trese Martirez, Cavite... itong Sta. Ana ang di ko alam kung sino nakabili sa kanyang former property whcih is located somewhere near Pandacan, Manila... Sta. Ana i think moved to Carmona, Cavite.. nasabi kong dalawa ang race tracks before kasi alam kong meron na ngayong isa pa and i can't remember what is called or on what name... anyways, since they have moved outside of Metro Manila, horse racing industry nowadays is in its decaying stages... the betting public are contented in watching the races in their homes or at their nearest Off-Track betting stations... ang layo nga naman eh, trafik na magastos pa... so why decaying, hmmm... gate ticket sales in all three race tracks have decreased immensely, eh mga bagong tayo lamang ang mga new tracks ng tatlong yan so syempre may mga construction loans pa mga yan sa banko nila... slowly, the betting public is dissatisfied the way the races are handled so chances are yung gambling addiction nawawala na, nakakatamaran eh... i've said poor handling of races because instead of the usual 1,400M eh ginagawang 900M na lang haba ng isang karera, eh puro ganyan na lamang so yung thrill nawawala... need nila magtipid ng haba ng isang karera so that they can save on overhead expenses like electricity and isa pa, maagang nagsisi-uwi ang mga patrons at malayo nga sa Manila hehehehe....

bad business strategy pala ung relocation nila... anyway, i still see a lot of patrons on betting stations within the metro... so i think it's the ticket sales on the venue which suffered a lot...
