FIBA Asia - Quarter-Final places on the line in Manila

MANILA (FIBA Asia Championship/FIBA Basketball World Cup) - It is crunch time at the FIBA Asia Championship, with Quarter-Final match-ups to be decided by a thrilling day of basketball on Wednesday.

Korea continued their steady march towards the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup with a convincing 71-47 win over Kazakhstan, in the process locking up second place in Group F with one day remaining.

Kim Sunhyung was perfect from the field on his way to 14 points, while exciting youngster Kim Mingoo pitched in with 14 points and six rebounds. For Kazakhstan, only the naturalised Jerri Jonson (15 points, 6/7 field goals) could make inroads into the Korean defense.

The Philippines kept their hopes of finishing atop Group E alive with a stunning 80-70 demolition of the previously undefeated Qatar.

Through the centre pairing of Marcus Douthit (19 points, 14 rebounds) and Japeth Aguilar (14 points, 7 rebounds) the host nation overpowered Qatar and then ran them off their feet on the way to a 23-point third-quarter lead.

Behind Jarvis Hayes (17 points, 11 rebounds) the Qataris restored some respectability in the fourth period but the damage had been done.

The result sets up a crucial final day clash between Qatar and Chinese Taipei, with potential for those teams to join the Philippines in a three-way tie for first place if Qatar prevails.

Taipei kept their unbeaten run to the Quarter-Finals alive but only just, escaping a brave Japanese challenge with a 79-76 win.

Tseng Wen-Ting was again the star with 19 points and a number of crucial plays in the third term when Japan threatened to skip away, while the classy Lin Chih-Chieh (16 points, 6 rebounds) was also impressive.

Kosuke Takeuchi led Japan with 17 points and seven rebounds and was ably supported by JR Sakuragi (10 points, 12 rebounds, 4 assists).

Japan face a do-or-die encounter with Jordan on Wednesday to decide who continues on the road to Spain - and who will take on Iran in Friday's Quarter-Finals - following the Middle Eastern nation's 80-54 defeat of Hong Kong.

Mohammad Hadrab starred with 21 points and seven rebounds as nine Jordanians pulled in four or more boards in a 51-34 hammering of Hong Kong on the glass.

Iran remains undefeated in Group F with the World Cup in their sights, but they received a surprising challenge from Bahrain before prevailing 75-56 in the day's second game.

After trailing by 18 points midway through the second quarter, the Bahrainis unleashed a staggering 19-4 run to pull within three at half-time.

But the quartet of Samad Nikkhah Bahrami (17 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists), Hamed Afagh (15 points), Mahdi Kamrany (9 points, 11 assists) and Hamed Hadadi (9 points, 8 rebounds) stood tall in the third to end the resistance.

China made light work of India 79-45 and can now assure themselves of a place in the Quarter-Finals by defeating Bahrain on the final day of the Second Round. However, if Bahrain can upset the defending champs, a three-way tie with Kazakhstan appears likely.

In the Classification Round, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia recorded their first win of the tournament with a 93-80 victory over Thailand.

BRACKET WATCH | FIBA Asia Championship matchups if Gilas Pilipinas wins over Hong Kong
InterAKTV · Wednesday, August 7, 2013 · 4:53 pm

With Qatar defeating Chinese Taipei on Wednesday, the two teams finished tied at first place in Group E of the FIBA Asia Championship with a 4-1 win-loss record. The Philippines can forge a three-way tie for the top seed with a win in the evening over minnow Hong Kong.

If Gilas Pilipinas takes care of business, it will end up No. 1 in its group by virtue of a better tiebreak. In that scenario, Chinese Taipei will end up second and Qatar will finish third.

With the position of the top four teams of Group F unlikely to change, here is the bracket if the Philippines wins on Wednesday evening:

Qatar coach on victory over Chinese Taipei: ‘We play to win, we wanted win’

For a chance to top Group E of the FIBA Asia Championship, the Qatar national team needed to win their game against Chinese Taipei by 16 points.

That scenario looked unlikely after Chinese Taipei tied the game at 68-all with 1:06 remaining.

But Qatar showed what they were made of when they hung tough and pulled off a win that had little at stake for them, but major repercussions for the rest of the group.

Their 71-68 win meant the Philippine national men’s basketball team, barring an unlikely upset loss to Hong Kong, will finish on top of the group with Chinese Taipei in second and Qatar third.

“We challenged (our players’) ability to bounce back from a loss and show some character,” said Qatar coach Tom Wisman, whose team was coming off its first loss of the tournament at the hands of Gilas Pilipinas on Tuesday night.

“And they responded to that.”

Qatar’s win didn’t move them up the standings, but for Wisman, victory is its own reward.

“We play to win. We wanted win,” the coach said.

“Winning is enough. That’s why we play the game.”

Tim Cone on Gilas Pilipinas bagging top seed: ‘I’m really excited!’
Rey Joble, InterAKTV · Wednesday, August 7, 2013 · 7:31 pm

San Mig Coffee coach Tim Cone has been an interested observer in the campaign of the Philippine national men’s basketball team in the FIBA Asia Championship.

Cone, a good friend of Gilas Pilipinas coach Chot Reyes, attended a couple of the team’s practice sessions before the tournament as an informal adviser. Since then, Cone has been rooting for the Philippine team from the stands.

When Qatar beat Chinese Taipei to give Gilas a fair shot at the top seed in Group E, Cone couldn’t hide his glee. The Philippines would only need to beat minnow Hong Kong on Wednesday to place first in the group.

“No doubt, they’re chances go up exponentially. I’m really excited! The key is for Gilas not to take the Kazakhs for granted and look past them to the semis,” wrote Cone in a text message to InterAKTV.

“They need to take care of business and not look too far ahead. But, wow, this is getting exciting. I’m so proud of Chot (Reyes) and the guys.”

Cone was the last man to lead a Philippine team to a medal finish in a top-level regional tournament, with his Centennial Team winning bronze in the 1998 Asian Games. Incidentally, current Gilas coach Reyes served as his assistant then.

Now, Cone sees a golden opportunity for the Philippines to bring home some new hardware.

“I feel Korea and China are certainly beatable. It would be nice to meet Iran in the championship game,” said Cone.

Veteran coach Tab Baldwin warns Gilas Pilipinas against dangerous QF duel with Kazakhstan

The Philippine national men’s basketball team only needs a win on Wednesday night against Hong Kong to take the top seed and book a quarterfinals date with Kazakhstan.

But veteran international coach Tab Baldwin warns against getting too complacent, a surefire recipe for an upset.

Baldwin knows what he’s talking about. In 2011, he piloted fourth-seed Jordan to victory over No. 1 Iran in the quarterfinals during his team’s Cinderella run to the title match of the Asian championship.

“Playing the fourth-placer of the other bracket is an advantage. However, Kazakshtan gave us all we could handle pre-tournament,” said Baldwin, who is currently helping the Gilas Pilipinas coaching staff for the competition that serves as qualifier to next year’s FIBA World Cup in Spain.

The Philippines defeated Kazakhstan in a tuneup match, 92-89, last July 26.

Baldwin says the result shows just how dangerous the Kazakhs can be.

“They are a big, pounding team that can give us some problems,” said Baldwin, who did note that the Philippines presents a lot of headaches for Kazakhstan as well.

“Our quickness can also give them some problems.”

China coach impressed by Gilas Pilipinas, hopes to play in front of big Pinoy crowd in finals

China coach Panagiotis Giannakis caught a glimpse of the Philippine national men’s basketball team against Qatar on Tuesday night, and came away impressed

“They try to play fast, aggressive. Their (fans) give them more enthusiasm. So if you want to play (against them), you have to be focused and control the game,” the Greek coach said shortly after his team’s victory over Bahrain on Wednesday.

China and the Philippines originally seemed destined for a quarterfinal collision, before Qatar’s victory on Wednesday shook up the playoff pairings.

Gilas Pilipinas can book first place in Group E with a win over Hong Kong, which would give them a seat on the other side of the bracket from China.

Instead, China will take on Chinese Taipei to begin the knockout rounds on Friday.

Chinese reporters asked Giannakis about missing out on a potential clash against the hosts, and he replied that he was hoping to see Gilas in a match later in the tournament, especially for the chance to play in front of a big Filipino crowd.

“I feel nice if I play with a full (arena). Anyway, I hope to meet them,” said Giannakis.

When it was pointed out that the soonest China might play the Philippines is the finals as they are on opposite sides of the bracket, his answer was simple.

“Why not?”

Gilas Pilipinas bucks ‘terrible’ performance to beat Hong Kong, grab top seed in Group E
InterAKTV · Wednesday, August 7, 2013 · 10:02 pm
FIBA Asia/Nuki Sabio

FIBA Asia/Nuki Sabio

The Philippine national men’s basketball team flirted with disaster in the first three quarters before cleaning up its act in the final period to defeat Hong Kong, 67-55, on Wednesday at the Mall of Asia Arena.

The victory formally gave Gilas Pilipinas the top spot in Group E, but not before a poor start that had coach Chot Reyes fuming at the sidelines.

“Terrible” was how Reyes described his team’s play. “I thought we had a very poor game tonight,” he said.

The winless Hong Kong team scored the first seven points of the game and opened up double-digit spreads at a couple of junctures in the first half, the last at 29-19 on a three-pointer by Chan Siu Wing with 2:33 left in the second quarter.

Gilas still trailed at the half, 33-28, when Jeff Chan sparked the team, scoring six points in an 8-1 run to give the Philippines its first taste of the lead.

Hong Kong had its last taste of the lead, 39-38, with 1:53 left in the third quarter on a putback by Duncan Reid. LA Tenorio broke down the Hong Kong defense to score two straight three-point plays and a three-pointer in an 11-4 run to bridge the third and fourth periods, giving Gilas a 49-43 advantage.

The visitors strung together five straight points to threaten at 49-48 with 7:52 left, and stayed within striking distance until the four-minute mark of the fourth period.

With the Philippines up by just four points, Gabe Norwood hit a jumper, stole the ball, and scored a three-point play, before Jayson Castro hit a fastbreak layup to give Gilas its first double-digit spread, 65-54, with 1:48 remaining.

“I really thought we could have played a lot better tonight,” said Reyes. “There’s no such thing as a sure win.”

The Filipinos shot miserably from the field, making just 38 percent of their field goals and 21 percent of their three-point shots. Against inferior competition, the hustle was also lacking for Gilas, as they gave up 14 offensive rebounds to the smaller Hong Kong players.

Despite the lethargic effort, the Philippines secured first place in its group by having a better tiebreaker after finishing with the same record as Chinese Taipei and Qatar. The team moves into a knockout duel against Kazakhstan on Friday.

di lang puso kelangan ng Gilas , dapat presence of mind din , malakas ang Kazaks lalo na nung game nila against China , kahit talo sila binigay nila best nila . Wag maging complacent ang Gilas dahil tinalo nila kazaks sa tune up game e kompyansa sila.
