UFC 175 results: Chris Weidman retains title against Lyoto Machida in thrilling fight
LAS VEGAS - Going into his UFC 175 title defense against Lyoto Machida, there were still people who believed that undefeated UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman was somehow a fluke.
No one in their right mind is saying that after Saturday night, though. In a thrilling battle, Weidman got off to a fast start against the former light heavyweight champion, withstood a furious late-round comeback, and retained his championship via unanimous decision in the main event of UFC 175 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center.
The judges' scores were 49-45, 48-47, and 49-46.
"He's as good as I thought," Weidman (12-0) said of Machida. "He's quick, he's tricky in there."
Machida (21-5) attempted to get off to his trademark methodical start, but Weidman did his best to keep Machida from getting into his comfort zone. Weidman threw kicks, landed combos, and pursued Machida when he attempted to scamper to safety.
The second round was similar to the first, but this time Weidman further asserted himself, finishing things off with a takedown in the final minute.
By the third round, the fight seemed to be squarely in Weidman's favor, as he continued to shoot for takedowns and impose his will.
When the bout hit the championship rounds, however, Machida displayed a sense of urgency. The Brazilian started landing body kicks, started in with his trademark in-and-out combos, started to land hard with his strikes. Machida connected with a huge left to the jaw at the horn which rocked Weidman backwards, sealing the round in Machida's favor.
Machida continued to bring the heat in the fifth round. This is where Weidman answered several of the questions which lingered in the leadup to the fight. Does Weidman have a chin? He shook off several of Machida's hardest shots. Does he have heart? He managed to ride out the storm, get his second win, score a takedown with under two minutes left in the fight, and seal his victory.
The challenger finished the bout with one last manic flurry of strikes, which brought the crowd at Mandalay Bay to their feet. But Weidman weathered that, too, as the horn sound and the Long Island native retained his belt.
Asked if he was hurt by Machida during the fight, Weidman said "probably. I don't remember right now. I was in the moment."
For his part, Machida, in defeat, displayed the sense of class which has earned him such a loyal fan following.
"The plan was to keep the fight standing," Machida said. "But he's a true champion, he deserves the title. I'll be back strong."

UFC 175 results: Ronda Rousey needs just 16 seconds to finish Alexis Davis
LAS VEGAS - Ronda Rousey apparently wanted to prove a point about her striking.
The UFC women's bantamweight champion put on a swift and lethal show Saturday night in the co-main event of UFC 175 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center, needing just 16 seconds to finish Canada's Alexis Davis.
The victory earned Rousey, who has been heavily jeered in her recent fights, a standing ovation from the fans in attendance.
"Hopefully everyone keeps cheering for me," Rousey said. "Thank you."
Rousey tagged Davis (16-6) with a right hand at the outset, landed a big knee in the clinch, and then delivered a picture-perfect judo throw. When they hit the ground, Rousey grabbed a headlock and delivered punches until referee Yves Levigne waved it off.
"I box six days a week and I grapple and wrestler four days a week," Rousey said. "So I have more to catch up with on my striking."
After the bout, Davis tried to get up while still wobbly. Lavigne attempted to put her back on the mat until finally, Davis sat down on a stool. Davis left the cage under her own power.
Rousey, with her fourth successful title defense in 16 months, added to her impressive list of accomplishments. She improved to 10-0. She's won all her fights via finish. She's won nine of her 10 bouts in the first round.
It was also the fastest bout of Rousey's career. She had won two previous bouts in 25 seconds apiece.
In the post-fight interview, Joe Rogan put Rousey on the spot and asked if she wanted to headline the Aug. 2 card at Staples Center in Los Angeles, which lost its main event of Jose Aldo vs. Chad Mendes on Friday.
"I've got knee surgery scheduled," said Rousey. "But I'll ask my coaches and we'll see what they say."

UFC 175 results: Urijah Faber submits Alex Caceres in third round
LAS VEGAS - Alex Caceres decided to aim high a couple months back and call out popular Urijah Faber for a fight.
Faber was only too happy to oblige, and Saturday night the veteran taught the upstart a few lessons. "The California Kid" rebounded from his loss to then-bantamweight champion Renan Barao in February and defeated Caceres at UFC 175 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center.
A rear-naked choke submission give the former WEC featherweight champ the win at 1:09 of the third round.
"He's very tough, he was on a five-fight win streak," said Faber. "I'm ranked No. 2, he's ranked No. 12. That's not too far off. I take these fights seriously."
Faber set the tone in the first round by winning the positional battle, scoring takedowns and working from top position.
In the second, a game Caceres had his moments, including popping the 35-year-old Faber with a sweet uppercut. But Faber stuck to his game plan and controlled most of the round, including a nasty judo throw.
In the third, Caceres came out swinging and Faber went for the kill, scoring a takedown and swiftly working into position for the RNC. Caceres tapped to give Faber his 18th career submission win.
"Enough pressure, he's going to make a mistake," said Faber, who has won his past 10 straight non-title fights. "He's a young guy, I kept up the pressure and he made a mistake."
Caceres dropped to 10-6 (1 NC) with the loss.

Rousey only needed 16 seconds to finish Davis. It took Buffer longer to introduce Rousey. Hehe. Nice to hear that they're now cheering Rousey. The main event match was dragging and boring (except for the last 2 rounds). Never liked Machida's style. Best fight was Faber vs. Caceres.

@Parabola
, medyo po. Hehe.

Vitor Belfort gets a license, title shot against Chris Weidman at UFC 181
LAS VEGAS -- Vitor Belfort was given a license by a 5-0 vote by the Nevada Athletic Commission on Wednesday, freeing him to challenge Chris Weidman for the middleweight title on Dec. 6 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in the main event of UFC 181.
Whether he'd have gotten that affirmative vote had he announced that the fight would be in Brazil instead of Las Vegas will never be known.
But be sure that it didn't hurt his cause at all. Prior to UFC 175, which was also at Mandalay Bay, UFC president Dana White told Yahoo Sports that the card would have a non-gaming economic impact of $175 million on Las Vegas' economy. A Weidman-Belfort title fight, with a potential Ronda Rousey-Gina Carano women's bantamweight title fight underneath it, would do massive business and would likely attract a paid gate in excess of $4 million.
Belfort, appeared in person with attorney Michael Alonso to plead for his license. He got emotional as he spoke and wiped tears from his eyes at one point.
He was required to appear in person because in 2006, he'd tested positive for the anabolic steroid 4-hydroxytestosterone. He was fined and suspended nine months for that. In addition, Belfort was given a surprise test by the Nevada commission on Feb. 7 when he was in Las Vegas to attend an awards show.
His testosterone was out of the legal range, but he was on a therapeutic use exemption issued in Brazil for testosterone replacement therapy at the time. He testified on Wednesday that he normally injected himself with testosterone twice a week. But he said that because he was traveling, on Feb. 6 he injected himself with a double dose and that was why he was so high.
He said he provided subsequent tests that were in the normal range shortly thereafter.
TRT usage was legal at the time of the Feb. 7 in Nevada, but only with a TUE from the commission, which Belfort did not have. TRT use was banned later in the month by the commission.
But the commission gave great weight to the fact that Belfort was unlicensed in Nevada at the time of the test and that he was on a valid TUE from Brazil.
Belfort's performance seemed to skyrocket after he began his TRT regimen in 2011 after a loss to Anderson Silva. Belfort said he'd been feeling tired and lethargic and sought a doctor's help. Since going on TRT, Belfort went 5-1 with five knockouts, four in the first round, and only a loss in a light heavyweight title fight to Jon Jones.
As part of the agreement to license him, Belfort said he would not fight anywhere until December and that when he did return, the bout would be in Las Vegas. Finally, he agreed to random, unannounced drug testing at the commission's discretion.
Commissioner Anthony Marnell said, "You understand we're going to test you until the day you retire," and Belfort said he did.
Alonso said he asked that the testing "be reasonable." He said that because Belfort would be giving blood in addition to urine, he didn't want him to give too much blood too close to the fight so as to put Belfort at a competitive disadvantage.
The commission said it would consult its doctors before ordering the tests.
It would have been interesting, though, to see how the vote would have gone had Belfort never mentioned the Weidman fight or if he'd said it would have been in Brazil. However, UFC CEO Lorenzo Fertitta, a former member of the commission prior to purchasing the UFC, said he didn't believe that the talk of the fight had an impact on the decision.
He said it is ordinary for the commissioners to ask a fighter when he plans to fight if he hasn't already had one announced.
"Vitor, I believe, was trying to be cooperative and show that he wants to do the right thing by saying I want to fight here in Nevada and I want to be tested and have you look at me as closely as you want," Fertitta said. "I don't think they were influenced by that. It's more a case of Vitor trying to make his point that he is doing the right thing and trying to cooperate."
Fertitta, who has had a long relationship with Belfort, said he believed Belfort when Belfort denies using performance enhancing drugs. No fighter has been under suspicion more than Belfort, but Fertitta said he has faith in him.
Fertitta said it would be "cruel" if it turned out Belfort lied to him about not using PEDs.
"Think about it, if he is taking something and is caught, look what the consequences of that are," Fertitta said. "It costs a lot of money to promote a fight of this level. We're going to be committing a lot of money to do the marketing and the ads, and all the TV programming we do. It would be very cruel of him if he's doing something knowing all of that and impacting as many people as he would be.
"I believe him when he tells me he's clean. I do believe that. We have a relationship that goes way back and it would be incredibly cruel if he turned around and did that [use PEDs] after we showed the faith and trust in him that we've shown and gone ahead and invested all of this money."
Fertitta said it costs the UFC "in the millions" to promote a fight of that caliber.
Still, it would have been nice to have seen how the commissioners may have reacted to Belfort's testimony had they not known the big-money fight was coming to Las Vegas.
Something tells me it wouldn't have been quite so easy for Belfort.

UFC on FOX 12 Results: Robbie Lawler Goes Distance With Matt Brown for Unanimous Decision
Robbie Lawler outlasted the toughness of Matt Brown, earning a unanimous decision on Saturday at UFC on FOX 12 in San Jose.
The 25-minute featured bout of the evening ended with Lawler getting the judges' nod with scores of 49-46, 49-46 and 48-47.
“There's two champions in this ring tonight,” Lawler said, addressing the tough fight Brown gave him at the SAP Center.
Lawler struck first with a combination of punches, later countering each time Brown stepped forward with a strike. Brown then found his mark, wobbling Lawler with a combination, which led to a clinch against the cage. Lawler broke free and unloaded a flurry of punches to highlight the end of the first round.
The two fought more relaxed in the second round before Brown shot in for a takedown, briefly getting Lawler to the ground. Unable to keep Lawler on the canvas, Brown came back to the feet, but landed a combination that sent Lawler backpedaling.
The third round started with Brown almost immediately shooting in for a takedown. Lawler kept the fight from fully going to the ground and landed strikes in the clinch, later separating and landing a hard kick to Brown's body. After a brief pause for a low blow, Lawler turned it up and began landing shots at higher accuracy.
Lawler opened up the fourth round with a knockdown of Brown, pursing to the floor and working from top position. Brown ate a number of strikes while trying to get back to his feet, and once there suffered another shot in the form of an uppercut from Lawler.
Brown entered the final round with a high volume of punches, as Lawler attempted bob his head out of the way. Both fighters began to throw a greater amount of punches, furiously trading shots through the end of the five-minute frame.
With the win in San Jose, Lawler improves his record to 24-10 with 1 no-contest, and puts himself in place for a rematch for the UFC welterweight title with current champion Johny Hendricks.

UFC on FOX 12 Results: Dennis Bermudez Submits Clay Guida
Dennis Bermudez collected the biggest win of his professional career, submitting Clay Guida at UFC on FOX 12 in Sacramento, Calif. on Saturday.
Bermudez pulverized Guida on the feet before bringing the fight to the ground and securing a rear-naked choke at 2:57 of the second round.
Guida came out with his typical high energy, bouncing around as Bermudez angled to find the right moment to strike. Bermudez eventually found the mark, chopping away at Guida and punishing him in the pocket with punches and knees. Bermudez brought the fight to the floor and worked to get a rear-naked choke moments before the first round ended.
Bermudez continued being the more accurate striker in the second round. With combinations of kicks and punches, Bermudez pressured his opponent, leaving a welt under Guida's left eye.
The fight once again went to the ground and Bermudez worked towards Guida's back, securing it moments later. He then sank in the rear-naked choke for the finish.
With the UFC on FOX 12 win, Bermudez collected his seventh win in a row, and puts himself in prime position for a top contender.

UFC on FOX 12 Results: Anthony Johnson Serves Notice, Rumbles Nogueira with First-Round KO
Anthony “Rumble” Johnson is back in the Octagon, and the Rumble is for real.
Johnson proved that much with his immediate destruction of Antonio Rogerio Nogueira at UFC on FOX 12 at the SAP Center in San Jose, Calif., on Saturday night.
After several years of torturing himself in trying to get down as low as welterweight, Johnson has since come to his senses and become a force at light heavyweight.
He lost to Vitor Belfort at UFC 142 in early 2012, was ousted from the promotion for missing weight on too many occasions, and then reinvented himself at 205 pounds. It has been a highly successful move for Johnson, who has revived a once promising career.
He added to the revival on Saturday night by taking Nogueira, one of the most highly regarded light heavyweights in the UFC, in just 44 seconds.
Johnson took a few moments to acclimate himself, then rocked Nogueira with the first punch of the fight. He didn’t stop, realizing that he’d tagged the veteran, and followed up with a brutal series of punches that included several uppercuts.
“I just kept thinking, I gotta hurt this guy really bad or put him away because he’s a Nogueira and they don’t stop,” said Johnson after the fight.
But like several other fighters before him, Nogueira couldn’t handle the power that Johnson unleashed. He had no choice but to stop, as he crumpled to the mat under the fury of Johnson’s fists.
It was a scary dismantling of one of the top 205-pound fighters in the world, framing Johnson as one of the most intimidating fighters in the division.
“Hopefully, I keep putting fear in everybody’s heart,” Johnson said after the fifth knockout in his last eight bouts.

Signed, Sealed, Delivered: Anderson Silva vs. Nick Diaz Signed for Early 2015
Former UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva will return to action on Jan. 31 against Nick Diaz in Las Vegas. UFC president Dana White announced the development on SportsCenter on Tuesday.
The 39-year-old Silva has been sidelined since suffering a broken leg in his UFC 168 loss to Chris Weidman on Dec. 28. White expects Silva to return in top form against Diaz.
“I think he will (be as good as he was before the injury). He’s been training. He said his leg feels great. There were a couple of adjustments he needed to make, but other than that he feels good. He’s confident. He’s excited. He’s ready to fight, and more importantly his head is in the right place with that leg. I guess he’s been kicking a lot and he feels good,” said White
On July 24, Diaz inked a new three-fight deal with the UFC ending his pseudo-retirement. Following his UFC 158 loss to then-champion Georges St-Pierre on March 16, 2013, Diaz announced he had hung up his gloves. A fight with Silva was enough to entice the Stockton native back to the cage.
“I’d be interested in fighting (Anderson Silva) and anything that’s going to do well,” Diaz told UFC.com after signing the new contract. “As far as Anderson Silva, I think that would be a great fight for people to see because he has my type of style.”
A win over Silva would put Diaz in the mix for a title shot in the middleweight division.
“If he comes in and beats Anderson Silva, he could fight for the title,” said White. “He’s right in there. It would be a huge, huge win for him.”

Jose Aldo vs. Chad Mendes 2 Headed to Brazil, Headlines UFC 179
UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo will return from injury and defend his title against Chad Mendes at UFC 179 in Rio de Janeiro, UFC President Dana White announced on Saturday.
The 145-pound rematch, which was originally scheduled for Aug. 2 in Los Angeles before Aldo had to withdraw, will now headline the pay-per-view in Brazil, which takes place at the Maracanazinho Gymnasium on Oct. 25.
Aldo and Mendes were set to headline UFC 176 at Staples Center, but Aldo suffered a neck injury in training and had to step out of the fight. As a result of Aldo’s withdraw, the entire UFC 176 card was canceled, and the fights were rescheduled for later cards.
The UFC 179 featured bout will be the second time the two featherweights clash. The first meeting between Aldo and Mendes occurred at UFC 142 in January of 2012, a bout that saw Aldo win with a devastating knee to Mendes’ chin for the knockout.
UFC 179 currently has no other bouts scheduled for the card, but more fights are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.

Jon Jones Out of UFC 178 with Injury, Fight with Daniel Cormier Moved to 2015
Jon Jones suffered an injury this week that has forced the postponement of his next title defense.
Jones had been slated to defend his belt against Daniel Cormier in the UFC 178 main event on Sept. 27 in Las Vegas. Jones, however, suffered a leg injury in training that has forced him out of the bout.
The UFC announced the postponement during Tuesday’s edition of America’s Pregame on Fox Sports 1.
The fight will now take place at UFC 182 on Jan. 3, 2015.
With the fight postponed, UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson steps into the UFC 178 main event slot.
Johnson was supposed to put his belt on the line against Chris Cariaso in the UFC 177 co-main event on Aug. 30 in Sacramento, Calif. He will still defend against Cariaso, but the bout will headline UFC 178.
There has still been no word from the Nevada Athletic Commission or UFC officials about what or if any penalties Jones and Cormier will suffer for their respective roles in a skirmish during a UFC media day event on Aug. 4 in Las Vegas.
