Anderson Silva remains in hospital after successful surgery on broken leg

LAS VEGAS – Anderson Silva remains in a Las Vegas hospital following successful surgery to repair a broken leg he suffered trying to regain the UFC’s middleweight title.

Silva (33-6 MMA, 16-2 UFC) on Saturday threw a kick that was checked by champion Chris Weidman (11-0 MMA, 7-0 UFC), and in the process Silva’s left leg was badly broken. The fight was the main event of UFC 168 at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Following Silva’s surgery, the UFC issued a statement announcing UFC orthopedic surgeon Dr. Steven Sanders had repaired Silva’s broken left tibia as well as stabilized his broken left fibula. The UFC estimated his recovery time to be as long as six months.

“Following Saturday evening’s UFC 168 main event, former champion Anderson Silva was taken to a local Las Vegas hospital where he underwent surgery to repair a broken left leg. The successful surgery, performed by Dr. Steven Sanders, the UFC’s orthopedic surgeon, inserted an intramedullary rod into Anderson’s left tibia. The broken fibula was stabilized and does not require a separate surgery. Anderson will remain in the hospital for a short while, but no additional surgery is scheduled at this time. Recovery time for such injuries may vary between three and six months. Anderson is deeply touched by the outpouring of support from his fans and the entire MMA community. There has been no immediate decision about his future, and he would kindly ask for privacy at this time as he deals with his injury and prepares to return home to recover.”

After a dominant first round for Weidman, who took Silva’s belt in a stunning knockout at UFC 162 in July, he checked a Silva low kick in the second – leading to one of the most gruesome injuries in MMA history.

Silva immediately collapsed to the canvas, yelling out in pain as referee Herb Dean waved the fight off.

“Anderson Silva has been amazing,” UFC President Dana White said at the UFC 168 post-event news conference. “He’s one of the greatest of all time, if not the best ever. It’s a s–tty way to see him go out, but it’s part of the game.”

Of course, time will tell if Silva returns from the injury, or if the fight was effectively a retirement bout that he hadn’t planned on.

Bakit Karamihan sa Inyo sinasabi ng Mag re-retire na si
Anderson Silva.. 2 straight Losses?, Broken Leg?

The Technological Advancement in the Medical Field have come a long way and with Anderson Silva's Financial Capabilities, him bouncing back from the injury he is suffering right now will be very Achievable, with the right surgery and physical therapy he will be alright and be in a STATE "physically" where he can Compete in the UFC again at a high level and even still contend on for CHAMPIONSHIP

1 year we will have to wait just 1 year to see Anderson Silva Fighting in the Octagon again, It is not over for him, Anderson Silva is just too good, too gifted to retire Looking Pathetic and hurting

Anderson Silva says he 'will be back,' quashes retirement rumors

Anderson Silva has a long road to recovery, but multiple reports say he wants to return to the UFC.

Jorge Guimaraes, one of Silva's managers, told TMZ that the all-time great "will be back" in the Octagon. Silva's coach, Pedro Rizzo said in an interview with MMAFighting.com that Silva told him: "I will be back."

"He had his second X-ray [Thursday] and everything looks great,"€ Guimaraes told TMZ. "It was a clean break so the nerves are OK. He's already started physical therapy and he's moving his toes."

A message left by FOX Sports with Silva'€™s other manager, Ed Soares, went unreturned Sunday.

Silva, the former UFC middleweight champion, broke his leg in grisly fashion on Dec. 28 when he attempted to kick opponent Chris Weidman's leg. Weidman checked the kick with his knee and Silva's left leg snapped on impact. The greatest pound-for-pound fighter ever fell to the canvas and screamed in agony in one of the most heartbreaking scenes in UFC history.

Dr. Steven Sanders, the UFC doctor who performed surgery on Silva's broken tibia, said the Brazilian could return to training in nine months.

But there are obstacles. Dr. Robert Klapper, who has performed surgery on Silva in the past at Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles, said Silva could experience pain in his leg for a year, as long as there are screws in his bone locking in the rod that was inserted.

Also, Kevin Ware, the Louisville college basketball player who suffered a compound fracture famously in a postseason game last March, said he "wouldn'€™t be surprised"€ if Silva retired, because of the difficulty of coming back from such an injury.

Rizzo said Silva doesn'€™t seem to be interested in hanging up the gloves.

"At the hospital, Anderson told me '€˜I will be back, master. I will be back,'" Rizzo told MMAFighting.com. "I told him '€˜Yeah, you'€™ll be back home to recover and rest'. And he said 'I will be back, master.'€™ He's a fighter. He has six months to recover, heal and then decide what he's going to do next."

Reps want Anderson Silva to fight Georges St-Pierre upon UFC return

It’s much too early to set a date, but Anderson Silva‘s managers are dreaming big for the former middleweight champion’s return to the octagon.

Jorge Guimaraes and Ed Soares, who’ve guided Silva’s career since his UFC debut in 2006, say the fighter’s recovery is going better than expected after surgery to repair the broken leg he suffered at UFC 168.

The process is going so well, in fact, the managers mused about a super- fight against Georges St-Pierre, if the former welterweight champ returns from a self-imposed hiatus. St-Pierre vacated his belt last month to deal with personal issues but suggested he would return.

“Don’t you think that’s an option?” Guimaraes told MMAjunkie when asked about Silva’s future.

Actually, the option was all the rage a few years ago when Silva (33-6 MMA, 16-2 UFC) and St- Pierre (25-2 MMA, 19-2 UFC) were dominant champs. Despite UFC President Dana White’s repeated hints of the big fight, fans lost hope that it would ever materialize, and the fighters didn’t seem too jazzed about the prospect, either.

Silva once called the idea “bull(expletive).”

But it sounds as if his camp is keeping the faith.

“Man, if we were able to pull something like that off, it would be a win-win for everybody — the fans, the UFC,” Soares said in a separate interview. “I think that would be awesome.”

But for now, the reps will settle for Silva’s return to health. Guimaraes expects the fighter to begin physical therapy next week after stitches from the surgery come out this week.

“He’s walking around on crutches and raising his leg, and he’s just getting ready to start physical therapy when the doctor allows him,” Guimaraes said.

“He’s already moving his toes. I feel that positive vibe on him, and that’s what makes me believe he’s going to come back even stronger.”

Silva broke his left tibia and fibula when middleweight champion Chris Weidman (11-0 MMA, 7-0 UFC) checked his leg kick in the second round of their rematch at the Dec. 28 UFC 168 event in Las Vegas. It was the second such injury to occur in the UFC after Corey Hill broke his right leg in a 2008 fight.

The doctor who repaired Silva’s leg the night of the event said the fighter could return to training in six to nine months. He added that Silva immediately asked him for a timeline, suggesting that speculation surrounding the 38-year-old’s potential retirement was premature.

Soares said the UFC covered the cost of the initial surgery and assumes the company will cover future medical bills.

“The UFC has been absolutely incredible to us and given us the best of everything,” said Soares, who lives two blocks from Silva in Los Angeles and said the champ was in good spirits during a visit Sunday.

“The way it looks now, (his recovery) looks great, and he’s only getting better every day.”

Georges St-Pierre Doesn't Regret Vacating UFC Championship, Unsure If He Will Ever Return

Longtime champion Georges St-Pierre recently vacated the UFC welterweight championship, citing a need to get back to a normal life.

“I’ve been fighting for a very long time, at a very high level,” said St-Pierre. “It’s a lot of pressure. I know that UFC is a business. They have to keep things rolling, so I vacate my title.

“I need to have a normal life for a little bit,” he continued. “If I come back some day, I will be even better.”

That was nearly a month ago. St-Pierre has since posted a few times on social media, but has made few public comments about his last fight, his hiatus, or his thoughts of a possible return.

St-Pierre made a public appearance in Edmonton on Saturday, however, giving his most extensive comments yet since he stepped away to the Ottawa Sun. He added perspective to his decision to remove himself from the fight scene, but did little to reinforce the likelihood for a return to the Octagon.

“I'm 32 years old and this is the first time I have my Christmas with my family,” said St-Pierre. “I spent some time, but I never really had free time, total free time like I did [this holiday]. It was time for me to do it. I'm very happy I did it and I don't regret any of it.”

It sounds as if his decision has been a good one for St-Pierre. The pressure of being a world-class athlete was a prime factor in relinquishing his belt. He realizes it’s something that comes with the territory, but it was also something that seemed to consume him, and he wasn’t enjoying it anymore.

“At the time, I thought it was the right time for me to do it. I had a lot of pressure,” he told the Ottawa Sun.

“People don't realize how much pressure I have. It's a lot of expectation. You take a lot of risk. You get so nervous because you care about it. There is so much on the line.”

At the time of the announcement, St-Pierre had been involved in 11 consecutive title fights, and hadn’t lost a bout since April of 2007. He wanted to attempt to live a normal life for a while to see if mixed martial arts could be fun for him again.

“I needed to take time off to relax, to feel better and to have fun to do it again if I ever wanted to come back,” said St-Pierre.

While he does seem to be enjoying his time away from the sport, appearing much more relaxed than he has in quite some time, St-Pierre did not clarify whether or not he expects to one day return to a career of prize fighting.

“I don't give myself any preference,” he said. “There is a chance I will come back.”

GSP VS. THE SPIDER

Will not Happen the Weight Difference Between the Two is Too big one of them would have to Sacrifices just to make the Fight Happen and it is very unlikely that either one of the fighters will give their opponent an Advantage entering a big Fight Like this.

The UFC Superfight that is Likely to happen is a Fight Between
Anthony Petis and JOSE Aldo.

Jose Aldo VS. Anthony Petis is a Champion Vs. Champion Fight  That can Happen in Near Future Provided that Both of them can Keep their Championships

Why Anderson Silva can't be counted out just yet

LAS VEGAS – Imagine for a moment that, instead of summoning all of his will and courage to get to his feet while being pummeled by Alistair Overeem, Travis Browne had a complete tear of all of the ligaments in his knee during their fight last year at the TD Garden in Boston.

Instead of rallying to win a bout that he was literally a second or two away from losing, the torn knee would have ended the fight and Overeem would have gotten the victory.

Browne wouldn't be on the verge of a title shot and wouldn't be developing a reputation as one of the most feared men in the sport of mixed martial arts.

As Browne was covering up and taking punches from Overeem, it looked like he was about to lose. But Browne rallied to his feet and scored one of the most unlikely wins in UFC history, setting him down the road toward stardom.

That very moment is the exact reason why it's impossible to dismiss Anderson Silva when he says he wants to return to the top of the UFC's middleweight division.

Yes, Chris Weidman knocked Silva out when Silva left his hands at his side and offered his chin as a target at UFC 162.

And yes, Weidman was having his way with Silva in the rematch at UFC 168 in December, until the leg kick that snapped the bones in the bottom of Silva's left leg.

As Silva lay on the mat shrieking in pain before an eerily silent crowd at the MGM Grand Garden, it seemed plainly obvious that his legendary career had come to an end.

Within a few hours, Silva was on an operating table, having a rod inserted into his leg.

UFC president Dana White visited Silva the next day in the hospital and, even then, Silva was optimistic that he would return.

"He was in pain, still, but he was talking about fighting even then," White said.

Now, just a bit more than two weeks after the gruesome injury, Silva is not only speaking of returning, but he's talking about another match with Weidman.

In an interview with Brazilian television network Globo, Silva said he felt he would have won the fight had it continued.

To many, his position seems ludicrous. Weidman nearly knocked him out with a right hook in the first round. Silva wasn't landing his punches. Weidman seemed in total control until the injury.

But then, as Browne was hunched over along the cage in Boston, arms protecting his head from Overeem's blows, he looked like he was done. You could have gotten some pretty long odds at that point that he'd not only come back to knock out Overeem, but to also then blow out veteran Josh Barnett.

This isn't to say that Silva is going to return and simply reclaim his old belt. Until there is evidence to the contrary, it's obvious that at this stage of their careers, Weidman is the better fighter.
Silva will be 39 in April, and he'll have to fight his way back up to the top when he returns. He's not going to be granted a title shot right away.

But in the interview with Globo, Silva made a point that had to put a huge grin on White's face.

"I just want to do what I do," Silva told Globo. "It doesn't matter if it's for the title or not. I want to do what I do well."

Silva is one of the top earners in the history of the UFC, but he's motivated by more than just money, so as unlikely as it seemed when his leg was broken and he was overcome by pain in the cage, he just may return.

High-level athletes have the kind of pride that drives them to achieve things that others simply can't.

If Silva chooses to return, he may never again be the UFC middleweight champion, but it's a better sport just having him a part of it.
