Helterbrand's vintage night sparks Ginebra comeback
By Alder Almo (philstar.com) | Updated April 21, 2013 - 12:45am

MANILA, Philippines – The legion of die-hard fans were wishing Mark Caguioa could get on the floor when their team Ginebra San Miguel stared at a huge 15-point deficit early in the second half against Rain or Shine last night.

Caguioa could only watch from the bench and cheer on his teammates to continue fighting back.

The Mall of Asia Arena fell to eerie silence as the fans of the most popular PBA ballclub were starting to lose hope because the second seed Elasto Painters appeared headed on their way to the semifinals for the third straight conference.

But not so fast.

After all, Ginebra isn’t called never-say-die team for nothing.

With their conference on the line, a forgotten man, the better half of Caguioa in “The Fast and The Furious” chose the moment to step up for his injured partner.
Sportshub ( Article MRec ), pagematch: 1, sectionmatch: 1

Jayjay Helterbrand earlier misfired a couple of shots in the first half but at crunchtime, he was clutch.

The 36-year old guard found a way to turn back the hands of time. Suddenly, it was 2008-09 all over again. Mr. Fast, the MVP version, came in and knocked in 13 all in the fourth as the Kings essayed another classic comeback, pulling off a 90-83 victory to live to fight another day.

“Glory be to God,” were the first words that came out of Helterbrand’s mouth after the game.  “We pulled off a miraculous victory because of Him.”

Helterbrand, a devout Christian, was a perfect three-for-three from beyond the arc in this vintage night. His biggest triple of the game stretched Ginebra’s lead to seven, 86-79, to kill any Rain or Shine momentum to steal the game back with just a minute to go.

“Coach [Al Chua] told us in the locker room that if we want to have a practice tomorrow, we got to come out there and play like there’s no tomorrow,” Helterbrand added. “And that’s exactly what happened. Thank God, our whole team was able to step up and play.”

It wasn’t only Helterbrand as there was also Kerby Raymundo, who muscled his way to 14 points that kept the Kings within striking distance in the third period to set up the stage for Mr. Fast’s heroics.

There was also LA Tenorio, who banged in 19 shifting to shooting guard in lieu of Caguioa leaving his point guard duties to new recruit Josh Urbiztondo.

And the newest King also had his own moments of brilliance as Urbiztondo ran the show with boundless energy in his debut with the squad finishing with five assists on top of five boards despite scoring only four points and missing all his six attempts from the three-point land. Their import Vernon Macklin also starred in this game bouncing back from his lackluster play the last time out, this time pacing the team with 21 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the field mostly from ferocious dunks and his patented semi-hook shots.

But clearly, the night belonged to Helterbrand.

The 36-year old guard, who is the only other MVP in the squad aside from Caguioa, bought some time for his ailing partner to join him and the Kings as they try to write a Cinderella story this conference.

Never Say Die: Ginebra overcomes Rain or Shine to advance to semifinals
InterAKTV · Monday, April 22, 2013 · 8:56 pm
Vernon Macklin scored the last four points of the game, including the marginal free throws to lead Barangay Ginebra San Miguel to an 81-79 victory over the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters Monday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.

The Gin Kings import scored on a tip-in to tie the game with under a minute left, before making two pressure-packed free throws with 11 seconds in the game to help Ginebra complete a quarterfinals upset over the second-seed Elasto Painters.

Rain or Shine had several opportunities to at least tie the game. But Macklin blocked Jeff Chan’s layup attempt with six seconds left.

The Elasto Painters drew up a play that freed up Paul Lee for a corner three-pointer that missed. Rain or Shine got a couple of offensive rebounds, but point-blank attempts by Chan and Gabe Norwood failed to hit the mark, leaving the mammoth crowd of 12,764 fans at the Big Dome in ecstasy as the final buzzer sounded.

Macklin finished with 24 points, 16 rebounds, and six assists for Ginebra, which moves to the best-of-five semifinals against the Talk ‘N Text Tropang Texters.

Chris Tiu and Lee led Rain or Shine with 15 and 14 points apiece, while import Bruno Sundov battled foul trouble to finish with a quiet 12 points.

In biggest test of career, Vernon Macklin steps up from free throw line for Ginebra
Rey Joble, InterAKTV · Monday, April 22, 2013 · 9:28 pm

It was the biggest test in the young professional basketball career of Vernon Macklin.

With a reputation as a poor free throw shooter, the Barangay Ginebra San Miguel import sank two pressure-packed free throws with 11 seconds left in the game to lead Ginebra to a thrilling 81-79 victory over Rain or Shine Monday night.

After the game, Macklin said it was one of the biggest games he has ever played.

The former Detroit Piston gave credit to Ginebra coach Alfrancis Chua for sticking with him in the clutch despite his poor free throw percentage.

“Coach told me that I will win or lose you, so he stuck with me,” Macklin told InterAKTV in an exclusive interview. “There was a time I was shooting really bad from the free throw line, but he trusted me and didn’t pull me out.”

Chua said that he was willing to live and die with Macklin’s performance from the stripe.

“I know Macklin can make it. (I told him,) ‘I will stick with you, if you miss your free throws, you miss your free throws. But I’m not gonna take you out,’” said Chua, who noted that wasn’t always the case at Ginebra.

“Dati nung si Siot [Tanquingcen] pa coach, he would take out [former import Jackson] Vroman, who is always being fouled.”

Macklin was also instrumental in Ginebra’s final defensive outings, swatting away a potential game-tying layup by Jeff Chan. He finished with 24 points, 16 rebounds, and six assists, dominating his matchup with counterpart Bruno Sundov.

Despite his gaudy numbers, he deflected praise to the rest of the Gin Kings.

“I have to give it to my teammates who played hard every game. Now, we’re here in the semis,” said Macklin.

Ginebra coach Alfrancis Chua on beating Rain or Shine: ‘They underestimated us’
Rey Joble, InterAKTV · Monday, April 22, 2013 · 9:13 pm

“They underestimated us.”

That was how Barangay Ginebra San Miguel coach Alfrancis Chua explained how his underdog team defeated Rain or Shine in the quarterfinals of the Commissioner’s Cup.

The seventh-seed Gin Kings booked their ticket to the semifinals with two straight victories over the second-ranked Elasto Painters, who were coming off back-to-back stints in the finals of the two previous tournaments. The Gin Kings did it despite missing superstar Mark Caguioa, while top point guard LA Tenorio struggled in Monday’s second win scoring just two points.

Still, other players stepped up.

“They underestimated our players, pilay-pilay kami, hindi nila na-anticipate ang puso ng mga bata,” said Chua.

The quarterfinals victory continued Ginebra’s storybook conference that has seen the Gin Kings rebound from a 0-4 start to crash the final four.

Up next for Ginebra in the semifinals is Talk ‘N Text, another powerhouse team. But Chua believes that Ginebra can pull off yet another upset.

“Morale ng mga bata at yung puso, hindi maalis yun,” he said.
