Wizards Rookie Buys Homeless Man Meal, Sits to Eat It With Him

Otto Porter Jr. Buys Homeless Man Sandwich, Schools Nation in Human Decency

" After about 25 minutes, Otto Porter Jr ., the Georgetown basketball star and the Washington Wizards’ newest first-round draft pick, drove up , hopped out of his car and entered the shop. Mr. Porter soon exited with his sandwich
and drink — but also with a sandwich, a bag of chips and a drink for the homeless man . Mr . Porter then sat down next to the man, and they both enjoyed their sandwiches while making small talk .

Rockets beat Pacers 116-96 in 1st game in Manila.

MANILA, Philippines (AP) -- James Harden scored 21 points Thursday to lead the Houston Rockets to a 116-96 win over the Indiana Pacers in the first NBA preseason game in the Philippines.

Omri Casspi added 17 points and 10 rebounds off the bench for Houston, while Paul George led the Pacers with 17 points. Dwight Howard was held to nine points in his second game for the Rockets after struggling with foul trouble, and had four turnovers.

Houston coach Kevin McHale started Patrick Beverly at point guard and Terrence Jones at power forward instead of Jeremy Lin and Donatas Motiejunas, who started in the first preseason game.

''I told them I will change starting lineups every game to see what happens. They're aware of it,'' McHale said. ''On this game, I saw D-Mo (Motiejunas) having a great synergy with Omri Casspi and the bench was just energized.''

For Indiana coach Frank Vogel, the Rockets just showed up more ready to play.

''It's simple: the Rockets played better than us,'' he said.

NBA Commissioner David Stern said basketball-obsessed country is an ideal host for NBA preseason games, and the league may go to other Southeast Asian countries.

He said Filipinos were ''rabid fans in a wonderful way.''

''The NBA is always trying to find ways to take advantage of opportunities particularly in Southeast Asia, and the Philippines lead the way,'' Stern said. ''But we're beginning to see activity around like Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia and Singapore.''

The teams play each other again on Sunday in Taiwan, the ancestral home of Rockets guard Lin.

Clippers' Redick to miss two weeks

Los Angeles Clippers guard J.J. Redick will miss up to two weeks with a bruised quadriceps, coach Doc Rivers said.
Redick, acquired via sign-and-trade in the offseason, is in the first year of a four-year, $27.7 million contract.
Rivers said in August that the Clippers will use many of the half-court sets designed to get Ray Allen open perimeter looks in Boston to spring Redick for outside shots as a way to balance the floor.
Redick isn't a great defender, but the Clippers parted with Caron Butler and, more painfully, sixth man and backup point guard Eric Bledsoe to add the dead-eye 3-point shooter.

Lee's 31 points lead Warriors past Lakers in China.

BEIJING (AP) -- David Lee scored 31 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead the Golden State Warriors to a 100-95 preseason win over a Kobe Bryant-less Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday in China.

Stephen Curry added 24 points for the Warriors, while Andrew Bogut had 14 rebounds and nine points. Lee finished 12 of 16 from the field.

''The way it's supposed to work is that we can get some stuff on the inside early in the game and that will open up the outside for guys like Steph to shoot 3s as the game goes on,'' the center said.

Nick Young led the Lakers with 18 points. Pau Gasol had 15 points and Chris Kaman scored 14 with 10 rebounds.

Although Bryant made the trip to China, he's sitting out the games to nurse a torn Achilles tendon and an ailing right knee. He was clearly missed by the Chinese fans, who chanted his name throughout the game.

Gasol said the Lakers faded defensively in the third quarter without their star.

''We don't know when Kobe's going to get back,'' Gasol said. ''But until that point we just have to play hard as a team as we've been doing, and making sure we can't wait for him to get back and everything to fall into place at that point.''

The Lakers play a second exhibition game in Shanghai on Friday.

The Warriors trailed 11 points at the end of the third quarter, but tied the score at 84 with just over seven minutes remaining on a 3-pointer by Curry and never trailed again.

Golden State coach Mark Jackson said Curry has been healthy the entire offseason.

''I thought tonight for the first time in a long time he had a rhythm and he was the best player on the floor,'' Jackson said. ''It was great to see and we expect tremendous (things) from him throughout the course of this season.''

Curry said the team played ''probably our best half in the second half all preseason.''

Nets edge Celtics in first meeting since trade
By Brian Mahoney (Associated Press)

NEW YORK -- One of the greats to wear green, Paul Pierce found it strange playing for the other side.

''It was a little weird looking over and seeing all the green uniforms,'' he said of his first game against the Boston Celtics. ''I'm used to lining up in the green and white for so long.''

Pierce made just one basket but grabbed 10 rebounds and added five assists to help the Brooklyn Nets beat the Celtics 82-80 on Tuesday night in the first matchup between the teams since a blockbuster trade on draft night.

Brook Lopez scored 20 points and Andrey Blatche had 14 starting in place of Kevin Garnett for the Nets, who won it when Chris Johnson made two free throws with 7.0 seconds left after the game was tied at 80.

Pierce finished 1 of 6, his only basket a driving layup with 6.2 seconds left in the first half in the first meeting between the teams since the deal that sent Pierce and Garnett to Brooklyn.

Coach Jason Kidd told Pierce to treat it like a green and white scrimmage - and the white pulled it out.

''I thought he handled it well, as any professional would,'' Kidd said.

Courtney Lee led the Celtics with 14 points but missed a potential tying jumper in the final seconds.

Pierce was the first Nets starter announced after he was always the last guy called in Boston. Originally shaken by the trade, he seemed to enjoy reminders of his past and catching up with his old teammates. He had a chat with Rajon Rondo by the Celtics bench while the Nets were shooting free throws, and later said something that drew a smile from Avery Bradley after blocking the guard's shot.

Pierce also visited the Celtics in their locker room before the game to wish them luck this season.

''It was weird at first, but it's at a point now where people just got to get used to it,'' Celtics forward Jeff Green said of the trade.

Pierce spent 15 years with the Celtics and is second on their career scoring list and was the MVP of the 2008 NBA Finals. He knows he has a lesser role on a deep Nets team, but won't accept that his days as an elite scorer are over.

''I still have it in the tank,'' he said. ''When the big games come, I still am more than capable.''

Garnett didn't play as part of a regularly scheduled night off after the Nets played Monday in Philadelphia. Kidd called it a ''reward'' for Garnett's good work during the preseason, though Garnett has already made it clear he doesn't want nights off.

The Nets were also without Deron Williams, who remains out with a sprained right ankle, and key reserves Andrei Kirilenko (back spasms) and Jason Terry (left knee), who was also part of the trade.

The Nets host the Miami Heat on Thursday night. They will retire Kidd's No. 5 before the game.

Durant scores 36 to lead Thunder past Nuggets
AP - Sports

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- Kevin Durant scored 22 of his 36 points in the first half to lead the Oklahoma City Thunder to a 109-81 preseason victory over the Denver Nuggets on Tuesday night.

The Thunder, in their first game after playing earlier this month in Turkey and England, raced to a quick double-digit lead in the first half and weren't challenged in the second half.

With his fiancee, Minnesota Lynx guard Monica Wright, watching from courtside, Durant hit four 3-pointers in the first four minutes of the second half. He finished 13 of 20 from the field and added six rebounds and four assists in 23 minutes.

Serge Ibaka added 13 points, nine rebounds and five assists and Thabo Sefolosha scored 13 points for Oklahoma City (3-0), which played without injured starters Russell Westbrook (knee) and Kendrick Perkins (finger).

Nate Robinson and Andre Miller each scored 10 points for Denver (2-2).
