Ah! My Goddess
The goddesses are named for the Norns of Norse mythology: Urthe, Verthande, and Skolde. Their respective areas of influence are the past, present and the future; much like the three fates of Greek and other European mythologies.

Astroboy
Although most folks think Astro Boy was the first anime on TV, the title of first Japanese animation on the airwaves is actually held by Three Stories, a special that retold three Japanese folk tales, which aired in 1960. Astro Boy premiered in 1963.

Astroboy’s Japanese title is “Tetsuwan Atom”.

In the cartoon series Astroboy: The real name of Dr. Packadermus Elefun (Elephant, as we know here in the Philippines)is Professor Ochanomizu. He is also known as Dr. Peabody or Dr. O’Shay.

Digimon
The third series of Digimon known as Digimon Tamers in Japan was written by Chiaki J. Konaka who is most well known for writing anime like Serial Experiments:Lain,Armitage III,Hellsing and Texhnolyze which explains why that season of Digimon is so dark and scary for a kids show. Apparently all the other writers were not interested in the third season and he offered to write the whole thing and take the lead on the project so he got it. Amusingly the episode he wrote for Digimon series 2 was also dark and scary and nothing like the other episodes. Which makes you wonder what they were thinking letting him lose on Digimon.

Dragon Ball
Toriyama Akira originally only intended Dragon Ball to be about 10 volumes or so, however due to it’s massive popularity he ended up writing 42 volumes. Later on Toriyama intended to make Freeza the final villain of the series however the creators of the anime wanted him to write more so he continued.
The same was true with the Cell saga however Toriyama went on to write one more saga, Majin Buu, before ending the series.

The first story arc in Dragon Ball anime (episodes 1-13) contained the least filler out of the entire series, the only “new material” from the manga being that Pilaf, Shuu and Mai (shuu and mai are unnamed in the manga) are introduced at the very beginning.

Dragon Ball has had quite a few references to Kaiju movies as well including Kame Sennin riding a baby Gamera to Gyumao’s castle, Son Goku transforming into an Oozaru and fighting with Pilaf’s plane is an obvious reference to King Kong and Baragon also makes a guest appearance in Dr.Briefs garden.

FLCL
FLCL most famous for being that weird anime where robots come out of a kids head originally started out as a simple boy meets girl story but Director Kazuya Tsurumaki was so into robots in anime that he talked to the writers about a way to work it into the storyline and that is what resulted. Also The iconic yellow Vespa seen in the closing credit sequence belongs to director Kazuya Tsurumaki. Apparently, he can’t get it to work.

Haruko refers to Naota as “Taro-kun” several times during Episode 1. Taro is perhaps the most generic name in Japan for a boy, and it used as a placeholder for unidentified Japanese males (like John Doe).

Gundam
So what does “Gundam” actually mean? When developing the original 1979 TV series, Sunrise first called the robot “Gundom,” a combination of “gun” and “freedom” in reference to the show’s working title, Gunboy. Creator Yoshiyuki Tomino changed the name to “Gundam,” referring to a robot that warded off foes the way a dam blocks a river.

Gurren Lagann
Lord Genome’s four generals are named after the four nucleotide bases found in DNA: Cytosine (Cytomander), Guanine (Guame), Adenine (Adiane), and Thymine (Thymilph).

ADV Films had the license at one point. A script had been written and voice actors had been casted. Then ADV dropped the title and it went over to Bandai.

The titular Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann mecha is, as of mid-2008, the largest robot in anime history, standing ten million light-years tall. Our galaxy is one hundred thousand light-years across and the biggest known galaxies are estimated to have diameters of roughly six million light-years.

K-on!
The family names of the four main girls are named after former members of the disbanded band “P-Model”. In addition, the instrument used by each of the four girls also matches with the instrument used by the cooresponding P-Model member. Yui Hirasawa from Susumu Hirasawa (Guitar), Mio Akiyama from Katsuhiko Akiyama (Bass), Ritsu Tainaka from Sadatoshi Tainaka (Drum), & Tsumugi Kotobuki from Hikaru Kotobuki (Keyboard). In addition, there are other characters that have family names matching those from the band “the pillows”. They include: Sawako Yamanaka from Sawao Yamanaka (lead vocal & rhythm guitar) & Nodoka Manabe from Yoshiaki Manabe (lead guitar).

Naruto
Uzumaki Naruto is the name of the hero in the anime Naruto. However, it also refers to the kamaboko (fish cake) usually put in noodle dishes (like ramen). Uzumaki means spiral (also found in Naruto’s emblem/logo) and naruto is a fish cake. Spiral fish cake

Neon Genesis Evangelion
Names in anime often follow a pattern -the characters in Evangelion are name after Japanese warships (plus an American carrier) of World War II; those in Magic Knight Rayearth after Japanese cars; while virtually everyone in Scrapped Princess carries a firearms-related monicker, such as Winchester, Leopold and Casull. The military characters of Fullmetal Alchemist -Mustang, Fuery, Hawkeye and the rest -are named after World War II military aircraft.

That the last names of the characters in Neon Genesis Evangelion belong to WWII warships?

Both Asuka Langley Soryu and Dr. Ritsuko Akagi Have the last names of WWII aircraft carriers. The Soryu and Akagi were the japanese, while the Langley was an American carrier. To go even deeper, Asuka’s mother’s middle name is Zeppelin, in refference to the giant Airships of the early 1930′s. This some what suggests Asuka has 3 true nationalities. American, German, and Japanese. Though this is just fan based speculation, not just mine.

In the Neon Genesis Evangelion film “End Of Evangelion” the scene where lots of Japanese writing flashes on the screen are actually exerpts from hate mail that Hideaki Anno recieved over the fans being dissapointed with the last episodes of the series and how it ended. End Of Evangelion was basically a giant middle finger to those fans so they used a lot of references to the fan hate.

Full Metal Alchemist
Do you know that Ed Elric’s dad Hohenheim is actually based on a real person. Theophrastus von Hohenheim was born in 1943 and traveled the world to learn alchemy and advanced medicine (which at the time contended that wounds were more likely to heal by keeping them from getting infected, as opposed to the then-widespread notion that you should pour burning oil on them). Because of his interest in the human body, he said to have tried to create homunculi (miniature humans).

Full Metal Panic
In Full Metal Panic The Second Raid episode 6 there’s this part where you will see the characters of Death Note, Light, Mr. Yagami, Misa and watch out for L in bicycle! though the scene is very brief.

One Piece
There are several Pirate names in One Piece that belong to real pirates. Some examples are Marshall D, Teach (Blackbeard) and Edward Newgate (Whitebeard)

The best-selling first-edition manga ever in Japan is One Piece volume 24. Over 2.52 million volumes were sold, meaning approximately one in 28 people in Japan has a volume.

Sailor Moon
Sailor Jupiter’s attacks were based on the powers of the Roman God of Thunder. In the manga, she had an attack called “Flower Hurricane”, and in the anime series, if I’m not mistaken, she had an attack called “Jupiter Oak Evolution”. Both of which are associated to trees.

Yu Yu Hakusho
When Kurama was introduced in the series, there was a brief sequence that shows him in his fox form– sporting 4 tails. Togashi was using the lesser known version of the tale: a kitsune gaining another tail every 1,000 years. So with 4 tails (and being born with 1), Kurama would around 3,000 years old.

Anime in General
Director Kazuya Tsurumaki personally oversaw the English dub in America. He was very insistent that the voice actors/actresses from the English dub had the same “essence” as the Japanese actors/actresses. He said he was very pleased with the characters for the English dub, and was especially pleased with voice actress Kari Wahlgren’s Haruko.

Fan service is an anime institution nowadays, and you can thank (or blame) two series for making it that way. The1973 TV show Cutey Honey broke gound by featuring the heroine naked during her transformation into the title character, while Gainax’s 1988 OVA series Gunbuster was the first to emphasize “bouncing” female characters.

The first CG in an anime was the helicopter landing sequence in the first Golgo 13 movie, The Professional, which came out in 1983. It, uh…looks pretty much like you would expect CG animation from 1983 to look like.

Tenchi Muyo started out as a sequel of sorts for Bubblegum Crisis.

In the French version of Maison Ikkoku, all the characters are constantly getting drunk on sodas and fruit juice because censorship wouldn’t allow the words beer and alcohol in a cartoon.

The theme of three sisters is used very often in anime, and that in almost all cases some of their characteristics can be traced back to the Three Fates of the Greek mythology. Ratings Record
The record for the highest anime-related Tv ratings is held by a 1985 series called Touch. with its tale of baseball, romance and sibling rivalry, the last of the anime’s 101 episodes roped in over 34 percent of all TV viewers across Japan during a prime-time slot.
