NBA: Balanced Cavs cruise past Clippers

LeBron James scored 22 points and the Cleveland Cavaliers put an embarrassing defeat further behind them Thursday with a 115-102 NBA victory over the Los Angeles Clippers.

Kevin Love scored 18 points and grabbed 16 rebounds for the Cavs as all five Cleveland starters scored in double figures.

The balanced effort helped Cleveland overcome a 30-point night from Clippers guard Chris Paul, who scored 12 straight points in the first quarter to keep visiting Los Angeles close in the early going.

The Cavaliers then clamped down on defense to come up with a solid win against a top Western Conference team days after they were blown out by the Golden State Warriors -- a defeat that James said "opened a lot of eyes for us".

"In order for us to be successful we have to defend at a high level. We've got to share the ball and get the ball moving from side to side and get the defense moving," said James, whose Cavs began their bounce-back with a win over Brooklyn on Wednesday. "We've done that the last two games."
Although James admitted that Monday's loss to the Warriors was a wake-up call, he bridled at the suggestion it was a "red flag" for the 30-11 Cavaliers.

"We're number one in our conference for a reason," he said. "Monday was definitely a test for us to understand how much more room for improvement (we have), but I'd rather be in this position than a lot of other teams."

- Grizzlies hold off Nuggets

Spanish center Marc Gasol converted the go-ahead three-point play with 12.2 seconds left as the Memphis Grizzlies held off the Nuggets in Denver by a score of 102-101.

Gasol scored 27 points and guard Mike Conley added 20 for the Grizzlies, who got off to a blistering start and led by as many as 18 in the second quarter before the Nuggets rallied.

Gasol scored 18 of his points in the second half, cutting to the basket for a layup with 12.2 seconds to play that put Memphis up 99-98. He was fouled on the play by Denver center Joffrey Lauvergne and made the free-throw to give the Grizzlies a 100-98 lead they wouldn't relinquish.

It was close as well in Sacramento, where Kings guard Rajon Rondo notched his fifth triple-double of the season and forward DeMarcus Cousins scored 24 points with 15 rebounds to lead the hosts to a 91-88 victory over the Atlanta Hawks.

Rondo scored 11 points with 11 assists and 10 rebounds as the erratic Kings notched their fourth straight win.

- Spurs scorch Suns -

San Antonio forward Kawhi Leonard celebrated his election as an All-Star starter with 21 points as the Spurs defeated the injury-hit Suns 117-89 in Phoenix.

Reserve center Boban Marjanovic notched his first career double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds as the Spurs won their 12th straight game and took their record to 37-6.

The absence of injured Tony Parker and a resting Tim Duncan was no problem for the Spurs, who never trailed in the contest.

With the win, San Antonio closed within two games of the 39-4 Warriors for best record in the league.

- Davis lifts Pelicans -

Anthony Davis scored 32 points to lead the New Orleans Pelicans, who continued their mid-season surge with a 115-99 victory over the Detroit Pistons.

Tyreke Evans added 22 points and 10 assists for the Pelicans, who won for the fourth time in five games.

Davis was his usual hard-driving self, diving into the courtside seats after a loose ball in the second quarter in a move reminiscent of one on which he hurt himself a fortnight earlier.

"It just happens," an unscathed Davis said. "I can't stop that. It's raw instinct."

M.I.L.K. is an epic photographic celebration of what it is to be part of a family, share the gift of friendship and more than anything else, to be loved. Inspired by the 1950s landmark photographic exhibition "The Family of Man", M.I.L.K. began as a worldwide search to develop a collection of extraordinary and geographically diverse images portraying humanity’s "Moments of Intimacy, Laughter and Kinship" (M.I.L.K.). This search took the form of a global photographic competition in 1999.

Basketball: Nowitzki calls time on international career

Dallas Mavericks star Dirk Nowitzki on Sunday announced his retirement from international competition for Germany.

"The last match at Euro 2015 was my last match for Germany," the 37-year-old Nowitzki told Bild newspaper.

On that occasion in Berlin on September 10, Germany lost 77-76 to Spain, a loss which knocked them out of the competition.

His retirement announcement came a few days after the International Basketball Federation announced that Germany had failed in a bid to stage one of the Olympic qualifying tournaments this year.

Nowitzki, a power forward who won an NBA title with the Mavericks in 2011, played 153 times for his country, making his debut in February 1997 and he amassed a points total of 3045.

He played in the German teams that took third place in the 2002 World Championships in the United States and second place in the 2005 European Championships in Serbia.

He was also the German flag carrier at the opening ceremony for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

Even without TD, Spurs is a tough team to beat. They are 7-0 this season without him. :book1:

Raptors trounce Clippers for eighth straight NBA win

Kyle Lowry scored 21 points as the Toronto Raptors thumped the Los Angeles Clippers 112-94 to stretch their winning streak to eight games and close in on NBA Eastern Conference leaders Cleveland.

The Raptors' latest win, on their home floor in Toronto, was their 29th in 44 games this season, one less than than the Cavaliers, who top the East at 30-12.

The Raptors have built the second-longest winning streak in club history, behind a nine-game run in 2002.

Seven Toronto players scored in double figures, led by Lowry who also handed out six assists.

Center Jonas Valanciunas scored 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds and guard DeMar DeRozan added 18 points -- ending his string of three straight games of at least 30.

The Raptors' four reserves, Cory Joseph, Terrence Ross, Patrick Patterson and Bismack Biyombo, out-scored the Clippers' bench 51-29 and helped turn the game around after Los Angeles had leapt to an early lead.

The Raptors led 62-49 at halftime and were up by 16 early in the third quarter.

The Clippers, paced by Chris Paul's 23 points, twice trimmed the deficit to four in the third period, but could get no closer.

"(The Clippers) had 34 in the first quarter and I thought it was going to be a long night but the second unit ... came in and changed the game, started getting into bodies, getting into players, being physical and I thought that changed the mentality," Raptors coach Dwane Casey said.

- Nets shock Thunder -

The struggling Brooklyn Nets surprised the Oklahoma City Thunder 116-106 thanks largely to a season-high 31 points from center Brook Lopez.
Lopez bounced back after being held to eight points in an ugly loss to the Jutah Jazz on Friday, scoring in double figures for the 43rd time in 45 games.
Lopez connected on 11 of 19 shots, notching his 18th double-double of the season as Brooklyn snapped a five-game losing streak.

The win, in a game postponed several hours because of the snowstorm that pummelled the eastern United States this weekend, was the Nets' second home win in their last 15 games at the Barclays Center.

Kevin Durant paced the Thunder with 32 points, his 10th game of 30 or more points.
Russell Westbrook contributed 27 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists, but the Thunder saw their seven-game winning streak end.

- Harden, Smith fuel Rockets -

James Harden notched the eighth triple-double of his NBA career to lead the Houston Rockets to a 115-104 victory over the Dallas Mavericks -- with a little help from recent Rockets acquisition Josh Smith.

Harden scored 23 points, pulled down 15 rebounds and handed out 10 assists.

Smith, who returned to Houston on Friday after being traded to the Clippers after last season, added 16 points and much-needed energy off the bench.

"I feel comfortable," Smith said. "It might have been a little different story if this had been my first time getting to know these guys, but being able to get an opportunity to play with the same team around the same group of guys is awesome."
Dallas entered the fourth period shooting 53.4 percent. They made 15 of 30 three-point attempts and led 70-59 midway through the third quarter but couldn't hold on.

Mavs forward Chandler Parsons poured in a season-high 31 points against his former team, but got little support from his teammates.

Forward Dirk Nowitzki added 19 points but was scoreless over four minutes in the fourth quarter.

Guards Raymond Felton and Wesley Matthews scored 16 and 15 points, respectively, but combined for just six in the final frame.
