How to have a healthy Vagina

There are tons of common misconceptions about what you should do to maintain vaginal health. You might think you know everything about keeping your lady bits in tip-top shape, but you could be missing some key tips.

A healthy vagina is naturally acidic and contains rich quantities of beneficial bacteria to help fend off infections and maintain a normal pH level. It is also normal to secrete small amounts of discharge to stay clean, just like saliva is produced to help cleanse the mouth. Interference with these normal conditions can cause vaginal irritation or infection, so it's good to know how to keep your vagina healthy.

Vaginitis is inflammation of the vagina, caused by a disruption of the bacteria in the vagina. Experts report 40% of all types of vaginitis are caused by candida, a yeast like fungus, and when it multiplies in the vaginal tract, it is called a "yeast infection", and around 75% of women experience one at some point in their lives.

Symptoms

Itching and burning in the vagina and vulva
Vaginal discharge (small amounts are normal, however)
Red, swollen, painful vaginal mucous membranes and external genitalia
Satellite lesions (tender, red, pus filled bumps, which can spread to the thighs and anus)
Odor
Causes

Antibiotics
Pregnancy causing increased heat, moisture, and hormonal shifts
Diabetes
Corticosteroid use
sixually transmitted diseases
Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection
Birth control pills
Obesity
High sugar intake
Wearing panty hose, tight clothing, or noncotton underwear
Menstruation -- women report recurrent episodes of vaginitis immediately before and after their periods
First Form Of Defense: A Healthy Diet

You may not realize it, but a balanced, nutritious diet and drinking plenty of fluids are key to vaginal and reproductive health, as certain foods are very effective in treating vaginal health problems. Cranberry juice and yogurt help to prevent yeast infections, aid in their treatment and even protect against UTI's. Eating more soy products that contain phytoestrogens or a weak form of estrogen, can aid natural lubrication.

Wear Cotton Underwear or Go Commando

I love it when I have done something for years, then I find out there is scientific proof of it being beneficial! I have officially "Gone Commando" since college. No scientific reason, I just got sick of wedgies, and always having to discreetly pull my underwear out of my crack. Finally one day I said "enough is enough" and I NEVER looked back!

Now it has been found that when it comes to your underwear selection, your vagina has a preference: cotton or nothing at all! That's why most underwear comes with a thin strip of cotton fabric in the crotch. Since it breathes and absorbs moisture, it's the ideal way to clothe your lady parts, says Mary Jane Minkin, M.D., a clinical professor of obstetrics, gynecology, and reproductive sciences at Yale University. Also feel free to go commando so you can let things air out.

Avoid Douching

Douching can interfere with the vagina's pH levels, reducing its acidity and setting the stage for bacterial infections. Normally, vaginal pH is about 3.8 to 4.5. If your vagina has a strong or unpleasant odor, see your doctor; a douche will only cover up the smell without curing the problem that's causing it. Avoid using harsh soaps or cleansers on the vulva or inside the vagina, as these also can affect a healthy pH balance.

Perform Vaginal Workouts

Yep, I have a workout for EVERYTHING! I didn't create this workout, but I know that doing kegels is crucial for strengthening your pelvic floor muscles. This is key in producing stronger, longer, mind-blowing orgasms, not to mention aiding bladder control. Include some kegels everyday to keep things hot in the bedroom, and to ward off the need of a pantyliner for leaks.

Lube Up

Sometimes when you're about to "get it on", it seems like your vagina missed the message. This is totally normal, but vaginal dryness can really impact you if you take certain medications like antihistamines, antidepressants, or hormonal birth control. It can also crop up after pregnancy and before menopause, so if this happens, make sure you’re taking steps to make sure you're properly lubricated. Being too dry down there is obviously painful and can cause small tears or abrasions. Or just use lube to speed up the process and make six even hotter.

Now I am not a fan of your standard "Lube", and I have also heard of many people being allergic to them, some say that they taste bad, or that they cause infections or get sticky and nasty. Well the perfect solution to all of this is using a natural item, that not only helps keep the area lubricated, but will absorb into the area leaving it soft, smooth, free of infection and that has a decent taste. Coconut oil is the clear winner here. It is natural, moisturizing, anti-viral, anti-bacterial & anti-fungal so it won't cause infection, and as a matter of fact it can help fight an infection. Now coconut oil also tastes good and is healthy for you, but if you wanted to make it sweeter, add a bit of pure raw honey. Honey also fights infection because it too is antibacterial, anti-viral and anti-fungal. It also helps heal wounds, tastes great, and is healthy. These are two fabulous ways to keep your nether region healthy and to spice up your six life!

Use Condoms

As if we need another reason to "Wrap It Up", knowing that rubbers are great at protecting against STDs and pregnancy. Certain studies show that using condoms helps keep your vagina’s pH level at the status quo so good bacteria, like lactobacilli, can survive in there. And this is super important since those little bacteria help prevent yeast infections, UTIs, and bacterial vaginosis. Just in case you needed another reason to wrap things up.

We don't like to discuss our vaginas because we think of them as some big secret. However, everyone knows that we have them, so it's time to be more open about the subject. After all, if we want to keep them clean, then we're going to have to talk about them. Here are a few ways to assure that we'll always smell fresh down there:

1. WASH WITH WARM WATER, NOT SOAP

When you step into the shower, you should keep soap away from the area. You should never use a vaginal douche either, because it'll actually harm your vagina instead of clean it. You should stick to using warm water to wash the area. It doesn't seem like a lot, but it's all we actually need.

2.CHANGE YOUR PAD FREQUENTLY DURING YOUR PERIOD

During that time of the month, it's natural for us to feel grossed out by what's going on down there. However, you shouldn't feel all that dirty if you change your pads or tampons frequently. As long as you don't keep them in place for too long, then there shouldn't be any nasty odors.

3.WIPE FROM FRONT TO BACK AFTER PEEING

When you go to the bathroom, make sure to wipe from the front to the back. You never want to start at the back, because the bacteria from back there can get into your vagina and cause you harm. But as long as you start in the front, you should be able to keep yourself healthy.

4.WEAR COTTON UNDERWEAR AND LOOSE CLOTHING

The type of clothes we wear can seriously affect the way our bodies smell. As pretty as silky thongs are, you should wear cotton underwear as much as possible. It's also healthiest to wear loose fitting clothes so that your #skin can breathe. If you're always wearing skinny jeans, you could end up harming yourself down there.

5.PEE AFTER six

If you're sixually active, it's incredibly important to pee after six. It pushes out any bacteria that might be inside of you. If you forget to pee, then you could end up with a Urinary Tract Infection, which can cause an unpleasant odor down there. Even worse, it'll cause you pain and make you feel like you have to pee every five minutes, even when you don't actually have to go.

6.EAT MORE FRUIT AND YOGURT

Your diet can also impact the way that you smell down there. Try to eat more yogurt and fruit if you want to improve your odor. Not only will it make you smell sweet, but it'll keep your entire #body healthy. There's never a bad #time to stock up on fruits.

7.GO TO THE DOCTOR WHEN SOMETHING'S WRONG

If the odor down there is different than usual, or if you notice a new colored discharge, then you should head to your gynecologist. It's not as scary as it sounds. Yes, she's going to #look at you in a place you're not used to showing doctors, but she won't hurt you at all. Besides, it's always a good idea to get a checkup, even if #everything is running smoothly.

If you follow these simple tips, then your vagina should always smell clean, with no offensive odors to be found. What other tips do you have for smelling good down there?

10 Ways to Love Your Vagina

What better way to honour and express your femininity than to practice ways to love your vagina. If you think your vagina is awesome, then you’ll never stand for anyone who doesn’t think it’s awesome. And, guess what ladies? It IS awesome! So here are 10 ways to love your vagina, as you should!

1. BE GENTLE

One of the first ways to love your vagina is to take care of her very gently. She's a sensitive gal. When cleansing your vagina, the last thing you want to do is expose her to harsh chemicals and perfumes. The vagina is actually self-cleaning ... kind of like an oven ... but not at all! Use water and a mild, preferably natural soap. Your vagina shouldn't smell like flowers, it should smell like a healthy vagina. If your vagina DOES smell like flowers or anything that's *ahem* unpleasant, (or if something unusual is occurring "down there"), please make an appointment to see your gynecologist asap, as you may have an infection that needs treatment! Same cleansing method goes for during your period (which btw you should embrace!) Also, be sure to change your pads, tampons, cups, plates (wait! I think I went one too far!) every couple of hours to keep the natural pH of your vagina balanced. An unbalanced pH leads to infections. Practice healthy hygiene fo r a happy vagina.

2.DRESS TO IMPRESS BUT WEAR SYNTHETIC LESS

I know! I know! Many of us like to wear fun, flirty panties. But most often these undergarments are made of synthetic fabrics such as polyester and nylon. The warmth and moisture created by these unbreathable fabrics cause bacteria and an overgrowth of yeast to #grow. There's nothing fun and #flirty about a big yeast infection now is there?! Therefore, if you want to keep #things sixy in every way, either purchase cute cotton panties or make sure those frilly panties have a cotton gusset.

3.LET HER BREATHE

Give the lady some space! Like I said, your vagina needs air. Just like you remove your makeup before #bed to allow your skin to breathe and renew, you should remove your panties for the same reasons. The less frequently you wear panties 24/7, the better. If Aunt Flo isn't in town for a visit, sleep sans underwear. The only Victoria Secret runway you'll be walking while you sleep will be in your dreams, so panties are pointless!

4.SPECIAL "K"

The other "K". I'm talking Kegels. Developed by Dr. Arnold Kegel in 1948, Kegel exercises strengthen and tighten the pelvic muscles which support the uterus, bladder, small intestine and rectum. Pregnancy, childbirth, being overweight, abdominal surgery and aging, cause the pelvic muscles to weaken creating health risks and problems such as urinary incontinence, uterine prolapse and dysfunction of the Pubococcygeus ("PC" ie: pelvic floor muscle). The cool thing is, unlike other kinds of exercise, you can do Kegels discreetly almost anywhere! You can't do pull-ups on the subway, (okay, you CAN but don't!) but you can do Kegels! So there goes that, "I don't have #time" excuse. Identify your PC muscles - the muscles you use to hold in pee - then with an empty bladder, tighten them and hold the contraction for 5 seconds, then release for 5 seconds. Try doing 10 reps, 3 times a day. You can even work up to contracting for 10 seconds, then releasing for 10 seconds. And trust me, just like any other #exercise, it is so worth it!

5.MIRROR MIRROR ON THE ... GROUND

It's time to start believing that your vagina is "the fairest of them all". And guess what? In order to do that you have to actually #look at her! Gasp! It's outrageous how few ladies have seen their own vaginas. Many have allowed it to be the only area on their bodies that's uncharted territory to them, but a downtown dining and entertainment district to others. Ladies, your vagina is yours to discover! Grab a handheld mirror and enjoy the trip! There's a false, manufactured ideology in this #world of what our vaginas should look like that convinces many women that their lady parts are ugly, dirty and gross. This brings about shame and insecurity within ourselves. Porn is often the only #time you're exposed to what your vulva is "supposed" to look like. Never compare yourself to the distortions of porn. You've got to unlearn that negative stuff perpetuated by society and come #face to ... vagina with the truth. Just as all of us are unique in every other way, so are our vaginas. And they are all #beautiful. Don't take my word for it though, see for yourself!

6.MASTER OF YOUR DOMAIN

Ah, masturbation. You knew I'd have to touch on this subject. Oh, the glorious puns! While you're down there with your mirror you may as masturbate with it ... looking into it that is! I'm a firm believer that your "first #time" should be with yourself. You can't expect a partner to know the way you like to be touched if you haven't even discovered it for yourself. Playing solo teaches you what you like and what you dislike, you're always doing it with someone you love - yourself! - AND it allows you to cultivate even MORE self-love and self-respect. Not only will you learn how your vagina wants and needs to be touched, you'll also develop a love and admiration for your body that you will exude and expect to be replicated by your #partner.

7.DON'T HESITATE TO LUBRICATE

There are two ways to lubricate your vagina - internally and externally. To keep your vagina hydrated internally, aim to drink 3 litres of water a day. Not only does this hydrate and keep your entire #body healthy, it also specifically flushes out bacteria from your urinary tract. To lubricate externally it's best to use a chemical-free, water-based lubricant when using condoms during six. NEVER use an oil- based lube with condoms or you will risk breakage. HOWEVER, during solo six or monogamous, safe but condom-free partner six, my personal favourite lube is #coconut oil.

8.GET SOME CULTURE

You want to maintain good bacteria in your vagina. You can do this by practicing a healthy diet. Eat those #fruits and veggies and stay away from sugar as often as you can. Also, incorporate prebiotic and probiotic cultures, as well as fermented foods such as kimchi, kombucha, kefir and miso. You may not be familiar with these foods, but I highly recommend that you check them out. They're delicious and good for you and your vagina!

9.SAFE AND SANITARY six

Please be respectful of yourself and your health and have safe six. Use a condom, especially if you're not monogamous. If you are monogamous use a condom or another method of birth control - unless your looking to start a family of course! Your vagina is naturally acidic and sperm is naturally alkaline. Ah, the private parts version of the Venus and Mars opposites! Continue to keep that pH balanced by urinating and washing after six. This also keeps unwanted, extra moisture away from the area.

10.PAP THAT

Make sure you have a great gynecologist and make an appointment to see them for annual check-ups. Gynecological exams generally include an internal and external pelvic exam, a Pap test and a breast examination.

It's amazing how much vaginas can do. They can bring you mind-blowing pleasure one moment, and a human life the next! Part of cultivating a great self-image and #body love is the knowledge that you're an all around fabulous female - inside and out! (Pun very much intended!) Show your vagina some much deserved love! Do you have any other ways you show the girl some love?
