Useful Kitchen Hacks

Life is busy and every spare minute you can squeeze in the day is valuable.  These genius ideas will have you marveling, “Why didn’t I think of that before?”  Here are 18 handy tricks that will make life a lot easier when it comes to the one room we undeniably spend the most time in: the kitchen.

1.  Use frozen sponges for cheap, convenient lunch box ice packs.

Soak several sponges in water then seal them in separate Ziploc bags.  Freeze, then pack them in lunch boxes for a quick, and inexpensive ice pack.  The sponges will melt, soak up the water, and freeze over and over again!

2. Use cookie cutters to make neat cake decorations, or shaped eggsand pancakes.

3.  Use bread bag clips to label cords.

Who would’ve thought?  I’ll never be on my hands and knees, following a maze of chords again.

4.  Coat measuring cups with nonstick spray before measuring sticky ingredients like honey, syrups, and peanut butter.

5.  Freeze fresh herbs in olive oil, then freeze them for a quick, delicious addition to sauces and pastas.

I hate buying an entire sprig of expensive herbs for only one recipe.  This is the perfect solution for that situation, for your abundance of summer herbs, or  your farmer’s market spree.

6.  Pit cherries quickly and efficiently using a glass bottle and a firm straw or chopstick.

7.  Or bend the two outside prongs of a fork for an inexpensive homemade cherry pitter.

8.  Forget expensive products that don’t work, clean and polish stainless steel appliances with…

9.  Remove the hull from strawberries with a firm straw.

10.  Peel garlic the easy way.

11.  Quickly cut potatoes with an apple slicer.

12.  Three easy ways to peel hard boiled eggs without the mess and frustration.

1) Prick the large end each egg with a pushpin before boiling.

2) Adding 1/2 a teaspoon of baking soda to the water before you boil eggs makes them easier to peel.

13.  Clean a crusty microwave with a soaked sponge (and sanitize a sponge this same way).

Soak a sponge in water and cook in microwave for one minute.  Careful, it will be too hot to handle with bare hands.  The moisture will loosen grime on your microwave and make it easier to clean.  To sanitize a yucky sponge, soak it in water and vinegar and microwave for one minute.

14.  Convert creamer bottles into convenient snack dispensers.  These would be great for traveling!

15.  Keep floss in your kitchen for cutting cakes, soft cheeses, cinnamon rolls, and other soft foods.

16.  Use a wooden spoon to keep pots from boiling over and avoid a huge mess!

Does it have to be wooden?  All evidence points to yes.  Call it an old wive’s tale, or culinary witchcraft, but for some reason, a wooden spoon will keep the boilage at bay.

17.  Use empty Tic Tac containers for spice storage.

18.  Use a PLASTIC knife to cut brownies neatly without sticking.  Crazy, but it works!

Ten Cheap and Easy Breakfast In Bed Ideas for Valentine’s Day

Try something new this Valentine’s day. Serve your special someone breakfast in bed! It easy, doesn’t cost you anything (You probably have all the ingredients in the house already) and gives you the cutesy bonding moment with your loved one. And everyone can do these things. Guys can cook for their girls, girls can cook for their guys and kids can cook these for their parents. So have a happy Valentine’s day and let’s start cooking.

1. Passion Toast

The idea is to toast a heart pattern on bread. You just need to cut out a heart pattern in a slice of bread. We usually use the slices at the end of the loaf since they hold their shape better when cut. Place this pattern on top of a bread slice you want toasted and place under your oven’s top broiler. It’ll also work if you have an overn toaster with a heating element at the top. Watch until the bread gets toasted to your desired level of toastiness. You should be able to use the pattern for several pieces of bread, until it gets too burned for further use.

Serve the toast as you would usually serve toasted bread, with eggs and ham or bacon, and jam or butter.

2. Enamored Egg in a Basket

Cut out a heart shape in a slice of bread. In a hot pan, put a little butter and place the bread in the pan. Break an egg into the heart shaped cutout of the bread.

Serve it with ketchup, may and of course ham or even better, bacon!

3. Forever French Toast

With a pair of kitchn scissors, cutout heart shapes from slices of bread. In a bowl mix some eggs, milk and cinnamon powder. Dip the bread slices in the batter and cook in a medium hot pan with a little butter until golden brown.

Serve with syrup or honey.

4. Fall for you Fried Egg

Fold some aluminum foil into strips and form into heart shaped molds. In a pan heat some butter and place the mold in the pan. Crack an egg into the mold and cook to your desired doneness. Always use tongs to handle the aluminum foil. It gets hot and you’ll burn your fingers if you touch them with bare hands.

Serve with toast or pancakes.

5. Affection Omelette

Use aluminum foil to create a heart shaped mold. You’l need to make it bigger than the one we used in #5 above so it’ll hold more eggs. Place the mold in a hot pan with butter and pour in a mixture of beaten eggs, grated cheese and chopped chives.

Serve with toast, french toast or pancakes.

6. Happiness Ham

Cut out heart shapes in ham slices and fry in a little butter. How easy is that! It also works with spam

Serve with ketchup, toasted bread or pancakes.

7. Caring Carrots

Carve heart shaped slices from a carrot and use in a salad. Some people may find it difficult to make thin slices. No worries, just poach the thick carrot sliced in water and they’ll be soft enough. Be careful when using a knife, you might cut yourself specially when trying to carve a hard vegetable like carrots.

Serve in a salad.

8. Romantic Chocolate

With aluminum foil create thin strips and form into heart shaped molds or letters if you like. Place the molds on top of a plate rubbed with a bit of butter. This is to prevent the chocolate from sticking to the plate. Melt some chocolate in a double boiler and pour over the molds. Place in the freezer until the chocolate sets then remove the molds. You can use any type of chocolate bar, without any nuts or fillings. We used a bar of milk chocolate. It was quite soft but we just placed it in the freezer until serving time.

Serve with vanilla ice cream.

9. “Hearty” Steak

Steak for breakfast? Sure, why not! This one is a bit tricky. We wanted to be able to get a big piece of steak in a heart shape but as it turns out, not all cuts are suited for it. What you can do is just cut out a heart shape in the part of the steak that’s all meat. Don’t include any large fat layers as these will cause your heart shape to distort. Then just cut the remaining pieces and fry along with the main heart shape. It’s heart shape steak with steak strips. If you pan fry it, fry some potato slices in the remaining fat from the fried steak. Yum!

Serve with a salad and potato slices.

10. Lovey Dovey Pancakes

You’ll need a plastic squeeze bottle and some pancake batter mix. Make the pancake batter and place into the plastic squeeze bottle. In a medium hot nonstick pan make your heart shapes by squeezing the pancake mix onto the pan. The trick is to make your outlines and letters first. Once they’re almost cooked you can start filling in your outlines. This will make the outlines and letters look darker since they cook longer. Don’t forget, when making letters, the letters should be written as a mirror image since you’ll be flipping the pancake later.

Serve with syrup or honey and ham or bacon.

Enjoy!

In line with your post...check this out guys!

Delectable tikoy recipes for Chinese New Year

Tikoy, or “Nian Gao,” is a Chinese delicacy popularly given away and eaten every Chinese New Year. The Chinese have always been keen on keeping this custom because for them, “Nian Gao” is identical to “higher year” in sound, implying that they wish the receiver good fortune and prosperity in the coming year.

In the past, tikoy was considered food for the rich, but now it is served and eaten by basically anyone. Its basic ingredient is glutinous rice (or malagkit), which is pounded or grounded into a paste and then molded into a desired shape.

Tikoy is usually coated with egg and fried, and served with a bit of sugar. But check out these other tikoy dishes which are yummy alternatives to serving tikoy this Chinese New Year.

~Grilled Porkchop~
(Kanto Style)

Ingredients:

6 pcs Pork Chops Thin cut (1/4 in thick)

Marinade / Basting Mixture:

2 tbsp Cooking Oil
2 tbsp Soy Sauce
1/2 tsp Black Pepper
3 Cloves Garlic chopped
*** Notes: If this runs out when you’re basting, just add more soy sauce and oil in equal amounts.

Procedure:

1. Place all the ingredients for the marinade mixture in a bowl and mix well.
2. Coat the pork chops with the marinade mixture and let it sit for about 10 minutes.
3. Grill the pork chops on a charcoal grill for around 10 minutes or until done.  This will depend on the heat of your grill and the distance of the grate to the charcoal.  Every couple of minutes, turn the pork chops and brush with the marinade mixture so they don’t dry out.
4. Serve with rice
5. Enjoy!
@magbubukid eto po inihaw na porkchop...malamang miss mo na yan...enjoy eating
