Changing of the guard: Once-dominant Talk ‘N Text slowly but surely rebuilding lineup

When people talk about dominance in the PBA these days, there’s really only one team in the league that comes to mind – the Grand Slam champion San Mig Coffee Mixers.

It’s easy to forget that a few years ago, prior to San Mig Coffee’s ascension into the ranks of the great teams in PBA history, it was Talk ‘N Text that ruled as the league’s alpha dogs, winning four championships in a span of just three seasons.

This year, it will be a slightly different look for the team as they officially began a rebuild that they hope can bring them back to the heights that they once reached.

“Yes, we’re on a rebuilding stage,” Talk N Text’s representative to the PBA Board and incoming chairman Patrick Gregorio told mediamen during the press luncheon for the league’s 40th season at the Palawan Ballroom of Edsa Shangrila hotel.

“We have to do that. Everybody knows that na yung panahon na napakaganda nung performance ng Talk ‘N Text ay nasusubukan na rin because of the really good players and we tried our best to rebuild our team,” he added.

Team captain Jimmy Alapag will begin the season on the Tropang Texters’ injured list after a grueling farewell tour with the Philippine national men’s basketball team. He signed a short, one-year contract extension this offseason, leaving many pondering how much longer the ‘Mighty Mouse’ will continue playing in the league.

Another player who was banged up in the offseason is Alapag’s Gilas Pilipinas teammate Jayson Castro, who will need time to recuperate from an injury sustained in the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup in Spain.

That’s not to say that Talk ‘N Text will enter the season lacking in firepower.

They’ve acquired a number of players that are expected to play big roles as Talk ‘N Text attempts to retain its place among the PBA’s most feared squads under newly-appointed coach Jong Uichico, who was elevated to the head coaching spot after serving in different capacities with Meralco and later Talk ‘N Text over the past two seasons.

The Tropang Texters have reacquired the services of 6-foot-7 forward Jay Washington as well as rookie standout Matt Ganuelas-Rosser and veteran frontline Larry Rodriguez.

The team is also expected to trade for Kevin Alas from sister NLEX in a three-way deal that has yet to be completed. The impending transfer has been put on standby as sources from the team told InterAksyon.com that they are seeking a third team to act as a middle to make the trade possible.

Grand Slam champion San Mig Coffee remains consensus favorite heading into PBA’s 40th season

On the day San Mig Coffee coach Tim Cone was named Coach of the Year by the PBA Press Corps, he warned the rest of the league that his team wasn’t planning on slowing down in its chase for more championships.

“Our time isn’t over yet,” Cone had said. And in this coming PBA season, it will be up to the reigning Grand Slam champions to live up to that as they gun for a fifth consecutive PBA title despite every other team sure to bring its best shot against the Mixers.

“We just lost our tuneup game against NLEX… but we know expectations are high. We can’t put down our guns because we’ve won the Grand Slam,” Rene Pardo, San Mig Coffee’s representative to the PBA Board of Governors, told sportswriters during the press conference of the PBA’s 40th season held at the Palawan Ballroom of the Edsa Shangri-la hotel.

“We’re now looking at the All-Filipino and go for win No. 5,” he added.

San Mig Coffee, winners of four straight championships including a sweep of all three titles in the PBA’s 39th season, will return with an intact lineup anchored on their own version of the ‘Big Three’ in superstars James Yap, Marc Pingris and Peter June Simon.

With other talents like Joe Devance and Mark Barroca, youngsters like Ian Sangalang, Allein Maliksi and Justin Melton and role players Rafi Reavis, Yousef Taha, Ronnie Matias and Isaac Holstein also on board, the Mixers are sure to remain one of the top contenders for this year’s crowns.

Their lineup is so stacked that they even decided to trade away their first round pick in the 2014 PBA Draft for future assets.

It’s little surprise that the other teams picked San Mig Coffee as an overwhelming favorite in the coming season, which is set to open on October 19 at the Philippine Arena in Boucaue, Bulacan.

Other teams that garnered some consideration as contenders include Talk ‘N Text, Rain or Shine, San Miguel and Barangay Ginebra.

“San Mig (Coffee), Talk ‘N Text and Rain or Shine will be there pero kami, nakaabang kang kami, kakagatin lang namin sila,” said Robert Non, San Miguel’s representative to the board.

Al Panlilio, Meralco’s new representative to the board, also picked San Mig Coffee, though he mentioned sister team Talk ‘N Text as a close second.

“From my standpoint, obviously, San Mig Coffee with Talk ‘N Text not far behind,” he said.

“I would put San Mig Coffee as No. 1 being the Grand Slam champion,” added GlobalPort representative Erick Arejola. “But I would also include the two other SMC teams – San Miguel Beer and Ginebra – in the top three.

Other members of the board like NLEX’s Ramon Fernandez and Ginebra’s Alfrancis Chua also picked San Mig Coffee as the favorite.

PBA slaps four players with hefty total of P140,000 in fines for preseason brawl

The Philippine Basketball Association came down hard with fines on four players that took part in a recent preseason brawl.

Veteran slotman Enrico Villanueva of NLEX and Rain or Shine’s Ryan Arana, Jervy Cruz and rookie Jericho Cruz, the players involved in the unfortunate fracas during an exhibition game, were fined a combined P140,000 by the Office of the PBA Commissioner.

The four players were summoned separately by league commissioner Chito Salud but none of them were spared from receiving a hefty fine.

Villanueva was fined P40,000 for throwing the first puch and engaging Arana in a fight.

Arana, who instigated the fight by throwing the ball at Villanueva, and Jervy Cruz, who kicked the NLEX center while he was down on the floor, were both fined the same amount.

Even Jericho Cruz, a rookie that has yet to play in an official PBA game, saw his involvement penalized getting fined P20,000.

Curiously, Villanueva engaged in the incident against the Rain or Shine squad of Yeng Guiao, his old head coach. Villanueva played under Guiao when both were still with the Red Bull franchise.

Talk ‘N Text rookie Kevin Alas excited to learn from new teammates Jimmy Alapag, Jayson Castro

Talk ‘N Text rookie Kevin Alas is ready to learn from the very best.

Alas, the latest player to join the reloaded Tropang Texters squad, was part of a three-team deal that was recently approved by the PBA and he’s pretty excited to join and learn from one of the most talented veteran backcourts in the league.

“Not only because you’re joining a team that has a rich championship tradition, you’re also getting the opportunity to learn from two of the best point guards – Jimmy Alapag and Jayson Castro,” he told InterAksyon.com in a telephone interview.

Alas will get a rare opportunity to be under the tutelage of the Philippine national men’s basketball team captain Alapag and its star guard Castro and receive some much needed playing time as well with both veterans expected to be out to begin the season.

Castro is recovering from injuries he incurred during the FIBA Basketball World Cup in Spain while Alapag is getting some much needed rest after one last tour of national team duty in the Incheon Asian Games.

Alas, who joined Talk ‘N Text in time for the team’s preseason game against GlobalPort on Sunday, will also be joining a favorable situation as he’s already familiar with his new coaches and teammates from his time as a cadet on the national team pool.

Among those he’s already played for or with are Talk ‘N Text coach Jong Uichico, Alapag and Castro, Ranidel De Ocampo and even fellow cadet and rookie Matt Ganuelas-Rosser.

“I know a lot of them. I’ve played for Coach Jong, who was our coach last year sa national team (in the Southeast Asian Games) and siya rin yung assistant coach sa Gilas, so I know how he coaches. Tapos sina Jimmy, Jayson, Kuya Ranidel and Matt, nakasama ko na rin sa Gilas,” Alas said.

“We’re like a family here.”

80% of tickets for PBA opening at Philippine Arena already sold, says commissioner

The biggest opening day crowd in league history.

That’s what the Philippine Basketball Association foresees for the opening of its 40th season as around 80 percent of the tickets for the ceremony set for the Philippine Arena were already sold with less than a week before the event.

PBA commissioner Chito Salud told InterAksyon.com about this latest development in a text message.

“I am happy to report that our opening for the PBA’s 40th season this Sunday is being met with enthusiastic response from our fans. I have been informed that 80 percent of the venue tickets have been sold, translating to some 35,000 fans already confirmed to attend,” Salud said.

“This is a huge number by any measure that can only become bigger as we get closer to opening day,” he added.

The Philippine Arena, the largest arena in the country, can accommodate up to 55,000 people.

Just recently, the Philippine Arena was awarded by Guinness for biggest attendance in worship gathering as the 100th anniversary of Iglesia ni Cristo attracted more than 50,000 attending the celebration.

Last year, the PBA drew a combined 30,000-plus in attendance as the league opened in three separate venues in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.

With the league opening the season at Philippine Arena, Salud is confident they could set the biggest opening-day crowd in league history due to clamor of fans for tickets.

“But more than the numbers, we in the PBA feel privileged to have this opportunity to give our fans a treat – fans whose unwavering support have brought PBA to where it is today,” the commissioner said.

“Maraming dapat pasalamatan pag dating sa istoryang PBA at ang nasa katuktukan nito ay ang ating mga fans.”

SMC Mixers to be renamed Purefoods Star Hotshots

MANILA, Philippines - The defending PBA Grand Slam champion San Mig Coffee Mixers will change their team name to Purefoods Star Hotshots ahead of the 2014-2015 PBA season.

Changing team names isn't an unfamiliar happening with the franchise, which has juggled with different titles since its entry into the Philippine Basketball Association in 1988.

Before being renamed the San Mig Super Coffee Mixers in 2012, the team was known as the B-Meg Llamados from 2010-2012, and called the Purefoods Tender Juicy Giants before that from 2007-2010.

Purefoods Star Hotshots is the 13th name the franchise will have during its successful tenure with the league - the eighth time the term "Purefoods" will be attached - which includes 13 championships and 27 finals appearances.

Purefoods star James Yap posted pictures of his club's new uniform on Instagram on Wednesday, October 15.

"This is where I started: Purefoods!," said yap, who was picked second overall in 2004 by the Purefoods Tender Juicy Hotdogs.

The Star Hotshots open their title defense on October 22, Wednesdays, against the Alaska Aces at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum at 7:00 pm.

Devance says Purefoods is ready to face challenges with history on the horizon

MANILA, Philippines – The San Mig Super Coffee Mixers, now known as the Purefoods Star Hotshots, are two championships shy from tying one of the most long-lasting records to stand in PBA history.

From the third conference of the PBA’s maiden season in 1975 until the Open Conference in 1977, the historic Crispa Redmanizers won six straight PBA championships led by the super play of Philippine basketball legends like Atoy Co, Bogs Adornado, Philip Cezar, and Freddie Hubalde, to name a few.

In the upcoming 2014-2015 PBA season that begins this Sunday, October 19, the Hotshots, coming off four straight championships and a Grand Slam, have the opportunity to become just the second franchise ever to win six straight rings if they come out on top in this season’s Philippine Cup and Commissioner’s Cup conferences.

If they could also add the 2015 Governors’ Cup championship, they would break Crispa’s 34-year record by winning seven straight titles and create an unprecedented feat of their own: winning consecutive Grand Slams.

“I’m challenging you to try and win six straight championships like we did at Crispa,” Co dared Purefoods head coach Tim Cone during the 2014 PBA Press Corps Awarding Night where Cone was named the 2013-2014 PBA Coach of the Year.

Many regard Cone, owner of 18 PBA rings, as the greatest coach ever in Philippine basketball. But even the multiple-champion, like everyone else, has yet to attain back-to-back Grand Slams.

But despite having the chance at history on the horizon, Purefoods isn’t going to let that veer them away from the mentality that has helped them remain undisputed for more than a year now in the PBA.

“It hasn’t changed from before. We are not a goal-orientated team,” Purefoods stretch forward Joe Devance said to Rappler in an exclusive interview on Thursday, October 16.

“We are a growth-orientated team,” he explained. “Meaning we already won championships. And that’s the ultimate goal. So now what?”

He elaborated, talking about “growth” and how every day provides the Star Hotshots to improve on their cohesiveness and move a step closer to winning even more titles.

“Usually teams that win will let up. So we focus on just getting better every day. We try to grow as individuals and grow as a team.”

Purefoods will have huge targets on their back. They are four-time defending champions, and as WWE legend Ric Flair would say, “To be the man, you have to beat the man.”

The man in the PBA right now is Devance’s team. They will receive the best out of every opponent on every given night they play.

Does that add pressure for the defending champions?

Their rivals shouldn’t count on it.

“We have no pressure on us to do anything,” Devance says. “[We] just take it day by day improving and pushing each other to be the best teammate we can be for each other.”

No PBA team has taken down Purefoods since mid-2013 in a playoff series, giving them all the reason to be confident heading into their title defense this season.

But the opening chapters of their journey may prove challenging with their heart and soul hustle man and national team favorite, Marc Pingris, scheduled to miss a few games.

“Mga two weeks ako mawawala. And then pa-condition na rin ako. Plano ko lang talaga from now, mga 10 days nang pahinga, and then tama na yun,” Pingris told Rappler a few weeks ago.

(I’ll be out for two weeks so that I can condition myself. My plan is to rest for 10 days, and that will be enough.)

Assuming he’s out for 10 days, Pingris, who averaged 9.8 PPG and 7.4 RPG last season, should be back for San Mig Coffee’s October 31, Friday, game against the Global Port Batang Pier at 7:00 pm at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum, after missing his club’s first two games against the re-tooled Alaska Aces and the always-dangerous San Miguel Beermen.

“The absence of Ping will be huge,” said Devance, who averaged 9.4 PPG, 4.3 RPG, and 2.3 APG last season, and will be given the task to shoulder much of the load with Pingris out.

“Everyone will have to do his part defensively and offensively.”

SMC’s play was uneven to start the latest PBA conference, the 2014 Governors’ Cup, as they exchanged wins and losses throughout the elimination round, finishing at 5-4 and at fourth place.

During the 2013-2014 Philippine Cup and Commissioner’s Cup, the Mixers finished the eliminations with 7-7 (fifth place) and 4-5 (sixth place) records, respectively.

In all three times, they managed to turn on the switch in the playoffs, as is evident by the three championships on their mantle.

But Devance thinks it’s best if the team doesn’t play with fire anymore.

“Starting off on a good note is going to be vital this conference. So hopefully we can do that.”

“Kaya nila yan. Wag lang lumaki yung ulo nila na galing kami sa Grand Slam. Kailangan lang talaga mag-laro na, syempre, gutom parin para makuha ulit yung semis,” said Pingris, confident about his teammates’ ability to make do without him during the opening stretches of the season.

(They can do it. Their heads just better not get big since we came from a Grand Slam. We need to play hungry so we can get to the semis.)

Aside from Devance, Coach Cone will have to rely on is second-year man Ian Sangalang, who despite being a rookie played like a tested and seasoned veteran in key stretches for San Mig during their Grand Slam run.

Sangalang, who averaged 7.5 PPG and 5 RPG last season, fits that last role well. Justin Melton, whose pesky defense and athleticism seemed to always wake up his team during their rough stretches last season, also will be looked to in the coming season.

“These two guys are great people and excellent talent. They are both learning Coach Tim’s system – where their spots are going to be in the triangle and learning our defense,” Devance said about the two sophomores. “I’m so proud to have those guys as my teammates.”

How about the changing of team name from San Mig Coffee to Purefoods, how does he feel about that?

“I’m really happy to actually be apart of the team that’s called Purefoods,” he says. “I’ve been a part of the franchise but not so much the actual name ‘Purefoods.’”

“People would ask me what team I play for and I would say B-Meg (former team name) or San Mig Coffee and they would look at me like, ‘what team is that?’”

“So then, [now] I would say we are the new Purefoods and they would get all happy.”

But regardless of which brand Devance and his teammates wear across the front of their jerseys, nothing gets fans riled up more than the mention of one specific player's name.

“If I know James Yap,” he joked.“Aaaaaaah!” would be their (fans) reaction.

FHM show-stealer Alice Dixson to lead muses in PBA opening ceremonies

Veteran actress Alice Dixson, the show-stealer of FHM Philippines’ Top 100 sixiest Women last July, will be back in the spotlight when she leads the parade of muses as one of three ladies representing the San Miguel Beermen in the opening ceremonies of the Philippine Basketball Association’s 40th season on Sunday at the 55,000-seat Philippine Arena in Bocaue, Bulacan.

It will be 20 years since Dixson’s first appearance in front of PBA fans back when the then-budding young actress was selected to become the muse of PBA club Great Taste.

She featured in a memorable moment when the late great sports commentator Joe Cantada requested a kiss from the young Dixson. After he was rebuffed by the actress, Cantada settled for getting one from her escort, PBA legend Philip Cezar, instead.

Dixson will be flanked by two volleyball players in Erica Adachi, a Brazilian import in the Super Liga Grand Prix, and Alaina Bergsma, another player who was named Miss Oregon in 2012.

Dixson isn’t the only one expected to make a splash in the show.

Jinkee Pacquiao, wife of boxing icon and Kia Sorento playing coach Manny Pacquiao, will walk alongside her husband in the parade.

Two lovely young talents of TV5 were also selected as muses for the ceremonies.

Meralco will feature ‘Tropa Mo Ko Unli’ star Ritz Azul, a frequent guest of Sports5’s PBA coverages, while NLEX will parade Dianne Mediano of Good Morning Boss.

Blackwater Sports, one of the two expansion clubs debuting this season, will have two muses – actress Sunshine Cruz and Binibining Pilipinas 2012 first runner-up Ali Forbes.

Several other ladies, mostly beauty queens and volleyball players, will join the parade as other teams.

The Purefoods Star Hotshots, the team formerly known as San Mig Coffee, has tapped 2014 Binibining Pilipinas winner MJ Lastimosa while Rain or Shine will be bannered by Mutya ng Pilipinas Tourism International Glennifer Perido.

GlobalPort and Alaska turned to local volleyball stars. The Batang Pier will feature the pair of recent FHM cover girl Rachelle Anne Daquis and Cha Cruz while the Aces will have La Salle star Michelle Gumabao represent them.

Manny Pacquiao’s Kia debuts with victory over fellow expansion team Blackwater

Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao and his Kia Sorento squad debuted with a win over fellow expansion club Blackwater Elite, 80-66, to kick off their PBA Philippine Cup campaign on opening day at the Philippine Arena in Bocaue, Bulacan.

Kia, which trailed 34-25 at the half, turned the game around with a 38-point third quarter behind speedy guard LA Revilla, who scored 14 big points in the quarter.

Revilla finished with a game-high 23 points and seven rebounds.

Three other Sorento players finished in double figures with Reil Cervantes and Hans Thiele scoring 13 apiece and Rudy Lingganay added 11.

Playing coach Pacquiao finished the game scoreless after playing in just the first quarter. He did give his team an effective halftime pep talk, however, after a poor offensive first half for the Sorento.

The eight-division boxing world champion, who is used to big crowds, tried to ease his team’s jitters about playing in front of the huge crowd at the arena, which has a capacity of 55,000.

“Sabi ko na wag kayo mailang sa dami ng tao. Nandito sila para i-cheer tayo. Wag kayo ma-pressure, laro lang,” he said.

Kia, with Pacquiao starting the game, got off to a very slow start. They were able to go toe-to-toe with Blackwater in the opening minutes but watched as the Elite extended its lead behind some solid post play from 6-foot-8 center JP Erram.

Pacquiao came out of the ballgame midway through the quarter with his team trailing, 15-6, and never checked back in again.

Blackwater finished the first with a 21-12 lead. Erram finished with eight points in the opening period, at one point having the same output as the entire Kia team combined, 19-8.

The second, meanwhile, was a defensive grind of a quarter with both teams managing to score just 13 apiece.

The Sorento shot just 22% from the field in the first half.

It was vastly different in the third period, though. Kia overmatched Blackwater with its hustle play as their high-motor, run and gun play produced 38 big points in the period.

Revilla used his speed advantage to the fullest, scoring 14 big points in the quarter while Cervantes added nine in a high-energy quarter that saw them forcing turnovers left and right.

When the dust settled, it was a 23-point turnaround for the Sorento, turning an 11-point halftime deficit into a 12-point lead at the end of three.

They carried their momentum over to the fourth, where they extended their lead to a high of 18 points, 75-57, after a three-point play from Lingganay.

The scores:
Kia (80) – Revilla 23, Thiele 13, Cervantes 13, Lingganay 11, Saldua 7, Alvarez 4, Sanga 3, Webb 2, Padilla 2, Buensuceso 1, Ighalo 1, Alonzo 0, Pacquiao 0, Raymundo 0.

Blackwater (66) – Tiongson 10, Erram 10, Faundo 6, Nuyles 6, Menor 6, Cawaling 6, Artadi 6, Salvacion 6, Ballesteros 4, Rodriguez 2, Laure 2, Austria 2, Timberlake 0, Gamalinda 0.

Quarterscores: 12-21, 25-34, 63-51, 80-66.

52k-strong fans watch PBA opener at Philippine Arena

The opening day of the PBA’s 40th season on Sunday drew one of the biggest crowds in Philippine sports history, with no less than 52,612 fans trooping to the humungous Philippine Arena in Bocaue, Bulacan.

The crowd easily eclipsed the league’s previous all-time highs in gate attendance, including the previous record of 24,883 fans during the finale of the Manila Clasico finals between Barangay Ginebra San Miguel and San Mig Coffee last February.

Fans were treated to a pair of exciting games, with Filipino boxing champion Manny Pacquiao making his debut as a playing coach for Kia which rallied past Blackwater Elite, 80-66, in the battle of the league’s two newest teams.

Crowd darlings Barangay Ginebra San Miguel then pleased the crowd in the second game, dominating the Talk ‘N Text Tropang Texters, 101-81, in the second game.

Here’s another look at the record crowd.

Twin towers Japeth Aguilar, Greg Slaughter lead Ginebra in opening day rout of Talk ‘N Text

The Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings were impressive in an opening day dismantling of retooled powerhouse Talk ‘N Text, 101-81, in PBA Philippine Cup action on Sunday at the Philippine Arena in Bocaue, Bulacan.

Ginebra’s twin towers of Japeth Aguilar and Greg Slaughter had a terrific outing in this game, with the athletic Aguilar finishing with 18 points, 18 rebounds and five blocks while frontcourt partner Slaughter notched a double-double of his own with 16 points, 12 boards and two blocks.

The Kings, coming off an offseason where they were able to continue learning both the triangle offense and the defensive mindset that their coach Jeffrey Cariaso has been implementing, looked extremely sharp on both ends in this one.

The Kings were merciless down the stretch, outscoring their foes 18-5 and pouring it on well after the outcome was decided as the quotient system could come into effect after the elimination round.

Mac Baracael also scored 16 points while longtime Ginebra duo Mark Caguioa and Jayjay Helterbrand added 12 and 10, respectively.

Talk ‘N Text jumped to a 7-2 lead after scoring seven consecutive points early in the opening period. They mostly kept Ginebra at bay, taking a slim 19-18 lead at the end of the first.

But the Kings began to find its range from the outside in the second. They went on a 14-5 run with Mac Baracael connecting twice from long range and Jayjay Helterbrand adding another.

Billy Mamaril capped the run with a three-point play off a beautiful dish from LA Tenorio, giving Ginebra a 34-24 lead.

But the Tropang Texters, despite being undersized against the Kings, continued to pound the ball inside with Harvey Carey, Kelly Williams and rookie Matt Ganuelas-Rosser all hitting key baskets.

Larry Fonacier cut Talk ‘N Text’s deficit back down to just four, 45-41, on a corner triple with 10 seconds remaining in the period.

Slaughter kept Ginebra in the game, scoring the last five of his team’s points in the first half.

Williams and Slaughter each had 11 points for their respective teams at the break.

In the third, more outside sniping from Baracael and some scrappy play from Mark Caguioa sparked a 9-1 blast for Ginebra that pushed their lead back up to double digits, 61-51.

Jayson Castro, who scored 11 points in the third quarter, attacked the basket relentlessly to score six points in a 9-2 Talk ‘N Text blast that got them back to as close as three, 63-60.

But Ginebra was back to its old tricks once Castro returned to the bench, scoring seven unanswered points on a Helterbrand three, an alley-oop finish for Slaughter and tough, off balanced jumper for Aguilar.

Talk ‘N Text rookie Kevin Alas finally got his first points of his PBA career in the fourth quarter and he poured it on, scoring the first seven of his team’s points.

Unfortunately for him, the Ginebra offense was even better during that stretch with Chris Ellis slamming home a highlight reel dunk and Helterbrand knocking down a jumper as the Kings extended their lead even further, pushing it to 13, 83-70, after a putback from Aguilar.

The Tropang Texters made their last stand after that with Williams splitting from the line, Alas knocking down another three-pointer and Williams scoring again to come to as close as seven, 83-76, with 5:43 remaining.

Williams had 20 points and 11 rebounds while Castro finished with 19 for Talk ‘N Text.

The scores:
Ginebra (101) – Aguilar 18, Slaughter 16, Baracael 16, Caguioa 12, Helterbrand 10, Mamaril 8, Yeo 7, Ellis 6, Brondial 4.

Talk ‘N Text (81) – Williams 20, Castro 19, Alas 10, Ganuelas-Rosser 9, Fonacier 9, Seigle 4, Carey 4, Ry. Reyes 4, Ro. Reyes 3, Aban 0.

Quarterscores: 18-19, 45-41, 70-62, 101-81.

Talk ‘N Text’s Jimmy Alapag looking forward to working with ‘incredibly talented’ Kevin Alas

Highly-touted Talk ‘N Text rookie Kevin Alas made his PBA debut against Ginebra last Sunday and already he’s impressed a number of observers, including his own team captain Jimmy Alapag.

Alas took until the fourth quarter before scoring his first points as a pro, but they came in bunches as he finished with 10 points in the ballgame.

The veteran Alapag, who is expected to take Alas under his wing, wasn’t too surprised with the performance of the young player currently.

“Kevs is incredibly talented,” Alapag told InterAksyon.com. “I’m happy that he’s with us and I’m looking forward to really spend quality time at practice with Kevin, just probably impose some of my experience.”

“I’m a little bit older than Kevs, but he’s a great player. He’s got a great work ethic and attitude, we’re happy to have him.”

Alas and Alapag have yet to share the floor in the PBA with the Philippine national men’s basketball team captain and former PBA MVP skipping the game as he rests up from his recent international campaigns.

But the two are pretty familiar with each other’s play as they’ve been training together for a while now, since both are members of the Gilas Pilipinas national team pool.

Alas, the son of Alaska assistant coach Louie, is cherishing every moment spent learning from the legendary point guard.

“Sabi niya sa akin i-enjoy ko yugn dati kong ginagawa kasi alam naman niya yung capabilities ko,” the rookie said.

In fact, Alas admitted that it was Alapag who helped him find his rhythm in the fourth quarter of his debut game.

“Kanina nga medyo passive ako, napansin ni Jimmy hindi ako tumitira. Sabi niya I have to be aggressive. Sinabihan niya ako na huwag akong mahiyang tumira.”

Talk ‘N Text coach Jong Uichico believes that Alas, as well as former rookie Matt Ganuelas-Rosser, have a lot of more room to grow in their PBA careers, although he did preach patience on their behalf.

“It will take time before we can see or improve their potential,” Uichico said.
