Meet the kick-ass Equus Bass 770
You will be forgiven for thinking that the car you see here is a restomod of a classic Ford Mustang--especially with that logo--but it's not. Apparently, this is the original handiwork of a start-up car company based in Rochester Hills, Michigan, called Equus Automotive, and this car is dubbed the Equus Bass 770. (Is Bass short for "badass"?)
Obviously, this is a throwback to the golden age of the muscle and pony cars in the late '60s and early '70s. "The 2014 Bass 770 is born of an abiding passion for genuine 1960s and 1970s muscle cars," declares the company website. "The rare seductive power of those legendary beauties, brought on by their unique fastback signature, enraptures and enthralls to this day. Proudly, the Equus Bass 770 sets a new reference in the international luxury automobile class as a brand-new muscle car."
The retro-styled fastback, according to the website, features a "full-aluminum bespoke frame and body, tailored leather interior, and skilled craftsmanship that meet in hushed eloquence suited to a genteel lifestyle."
We don't know if "genteel" is the right adjective to describe this car, because there's a monster residing under its hood. A handcrafted, supercharged 6.2-liter 90-degree aluminum V8 pumps out 640 horses and 820Nm of torque, good for a 0-100kph sprint time of 3.4sec and a top speed of 320kph. That's a lot of muscle right there. The gasoline powerplant is mated to a six-speed dual-clutch manual transmission.
Some of the equipment of this car include traction control, magnetic selective ride control, active handling system, variable-ratio steering, Brembo performance brakes, dual front and side airbags, and 19-inch alloy wheels (wrapped in 255/40 tires in front and 285/40 rubber at the back).
The curious part of this car is the body, because Equus Automotive says it is made of aluminum lined with carbon fiber. Enthusiasts have pointed out in online forums that aluminum and carbon fiber don't go well together. Perhaps Equus has developed a process that makes the concept work.
A fully equipped Equus Bass 770 goes for $250,000, or P10.9 million (possibly twice if you bring it in due to local taxes).
