(Asian Games) Volcanoes finish fifth in rugby sevens
The Philippine national rugby team finished a respectable fifth place after winning over China, 28-21, in the classification phase on Friday in the Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea.
The finish, however, was short of the Volcanoes’ target of a making it to the podium.
The victory avenged the Volcanoes’ 19-14 loss to the Chinese in the preliminary round.
The Volcanoes, ranked 52nd in the world, also lost to eventual silver medalist Hong Kong, 40-0, in the preliminaries before bouncing back with a 59-0 triumph over Pakistan.
However, the Volcanoes couldn’t get over the hump against Hong Kong, who beat them, 21-0, in the quarterfinals.
The Volcanoes went on to thump Thailand, 45-0, before getting back at China to finish fifth.
Japan won the gold, while South Korea settled for bronze in the rugby event which
The Volcanoes are one of the only team sports representatives of the Philippines to the Asian Games, and got a nod from the country’s sports officials to participate after their impressive performances recently, including a historic stint in the Rugby World Cup Sevens last year.

(Asian Games) Three Pinoy boxers settle for bronze
Three Filipino boxers settled for bronze medals after losing their respective semifinal bouts in the Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea.
Olympian Mark Anthony Barriga, Mario Fernandez and Wilfredo Lopez all bowed to their opponents on Thursday and missed a chance to have a shot at another gold for Team Philippines.

Fernandez also got overwhelmed by Zhang Jiawei of China in a 29-28, 29-28, 29-28 defeat in the men’s bantamweight (56kg) division.
Lopez failed to overcome his Jordanian foe Odai Riyad Adel Alhindawi in a split decision loss, 28-29, 29-28, 28-29.
With their losses, only lightweight boxer Charly Suarez has a chance to bring home a boxing gold for Team Philippines.

(FIBA 3X3) PBA-backed Manila West enters quarterfinal round of FIBA 3×3 World Tour final
Philippine representatives Manila West, comprised of PBA players Terrence Romeo, KG Canaleta, Aldrech Ramos and Rey Guevarra had a strong showing on Day 1 of the FIBA 3×3 World Tour Final after splitting their two games in the tournament in Sendai, Japan.
Manila West defeated Sao Paulo of Brazil, 21-17, in their first game before dropping a close decision to Romanian side Bucharest, 15-13, in their other assignment.
Their 1-1 mark was enough to send them through to the quarterfinals, where they will face Slovenia’s Kranj, which steamrolled through their opposition in the first round.
Kranj crushed Jakarta of Indonesia, 21-10, before routing China’s Wukesong, 21-8.
Other squads that advanced to Day 2’s knockout rounds are Bucharest, Jakarta, Serbia’s Novi Sad, Trbovlje of Slovenia, Saskatoon of Canada, and USA’s Denver.
Manila West’s quarterfinal clash with Kranj will be held tomorrow, October 12, at 12:15 p.m. Manila time.

(FIBA 3X3) Manila West loses to Kranj in FIBA 3x3
SENDAI, Japan – Kranj of Slovenia proved too experienced for Manila West Sunday, October 12, as they held the Filipinos without a basket in the last 5 minutes to advance to the semifinals of the FIBA 3x3 World Tour Finals at the Xebio Sports Arena.
Seeded third in the tournament, the Slovenians displayed a decisive familiarity with the demands of the fledgling FIBA event as they took control when the Filipinos began fading defensively in the final half of the match.
Kranj swept Pool C to draw Manila West, the No. 2 team from Pool B, as a quarterfinal opponent.
The quartet of KG Canaleta, Aldrech Ramos, Rey Guevarra and Terrence Romeo failed to score in the final 5:13 of play that negated their effort to claw back at 14-12 after trailing, 11-6.

(Basketball) MVP embraces challenge in FIBA World Cup hosting bid
MANILA, Philippines – If it’s too easy, it’s probably not worth it.
Manny V. Pangilinan, the national basketball team’s primary patron and president of the country’s basketball federation, says he is willing to take risks and go up against top basketball countries to bring the FIBA World Cup to the Philippines.
Pangilinan is spearheading the country’s bid to host the tournament slated in 2019.
According to reports, more or less P4 million has already been spent for the initial part of the bidding process. Twenty thousand Euros, or around P1.2 million went to the Observer Programme in Madrid last September and €50,000 (P2.8 million) was paid along with the submission of the bid application questionnaire – the deadline of which was last Friday, October 31.

(Basketball) MVP looking to partner with SM Group on possible 2019 World Cup venues
With the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) requiring host countries to have a minimum of four world-class venues, Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) president Manuel V. Pangilinan is looking to forge a partnership with Hans Sy and his family in making sure that the Philippines can meet that requirement.
Sy and the SM Group are already building an arena in Cebu that Pangilinan is looking at as a potential venue should the Philippines win the World Cup bid, and the top SBP official is hoping there are more in store for the future.
“Kung matapos na yung ginagawa sa SM Cebu, some of the teams can play there. Sana sa ibang probinsiya gumawa rin ng stadium,” Pangilinan told a small group of sportswriters
He said that hosting the FIBA World Cup would be a much larger event compared to the FIBA Asia Championships that the country hosted in 2013.
“It’s an infinitely more complex undertaking compared to the FIBA Asia Championship last year. We’ve seen how Spain hosted the World Cup. It’s a huge undertaking and we were warned by FIBA that it’s going to be 10 times bigger than FIBA Asia,” he said.
“Pero malaking karangalan sa bansa kung mananalo tayo. Hopefully, we made the shortlist and tingan natin.”
Among those that have expressed interest in hosting the event are China, the host of the 2008 Olympic Games and several FIBA Asia Championships, as well as a bloc formed by France and Germany.
“Mabibigat yung kalaban, kasama na doon yung China.”
The construction of the arena began not with the World Cup in mind but simply as a means for the Sy family to support Philippine sports in general.
“The family is really going to support sports in the Philippines. We’ve decided to put up an arena in Cebu. We’ll definitely push sports to new heights,” Sy said in an earlier interview with InterAksyon.com.

(FIBA WORLD CUP)
Heartbreak for Philippines’
#PUSO2019 bid as China named host of FIBA Basketball World Cup.
The Philippines’ bid to stage the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup on home soil fell short as China was officially named the host of basketball’s biggest international tournament after both countries made their final presentations to the FIBA Central Board on Friday in Tokyo, Japan.
The Philippine delegation pulled out all the stops but was just up against a formidable foe in China, a known giant in hosting sporting events.
“The 2019 FIBA World Cup in China will be about more than ever. More World Cup, more promotion, more basketball,” said a representative from the Chinese delegation led by former NBA star Yao Ming.
China just had too much in terms of infrastructure — from world-class venues to trains connecting the no less than eight cities that will host the games. They also boasted of more than the minimum requirement of FIBA standard venues.
They also showed off their experience in hosting huge international events such as the 2008 Beijing Olympics, the 2010 Asian Games and the 2014 Youth Olympic Games, among others, while also having a huge market thanks to its 1.3 billion-strong population.
The FIBA decision on which country will host the next Basketball World Cup was based on four key areas:
1. Vision and concept
2. Experience in hosting events
3. Basketball history in the country
4. Cities and venues
The two countries made their respective 20-minute presentations and each faced the 23-man FIBA panel for a closed door question and answer session before the final voting for the hosting rights took place.
The Philippine delegation, banking on its “heartware”, the Filipinos’ never-ending passion for basketball, as a key component of their pitch as well as the country being the social media capital of the world, was led by Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas president Manny V. Pangilinan who kicked off the country’s presentation. – InterAksyon.com
