(NFL) Carolina's Rivera wins AP top coach award

NEW YORK (AP) -- Ron Rivera took the Carolina Panthers from also-ran to division champion this season, earning him The Associated Press NFL Coach of the Year award.

Rivera's Panthers went 12-4 to take the NFC South and get a first-round playoff bye. They lost to San Francisco in the divisional round.

(NFL) Second-year LB Kuechly AP's top defensive player

NEW YORK (AP) -- Luke Kuechly has been voted The Associated Press NFL Defensive Player of the Year, adding the honor to his top defensive rookie award of 2012.

Carolina's All-Pro linebacker received 19 votes from a nationwide panel of 50 media members who regularly cover the league in balloting announced Saturday night. He beat out Indianapolis All-Pro linebacker Robert Mathis, who earned 11 1/2 votes.

Kuechly was credited with 96 tackles for a defense that allowed 241 points, fewer than any team except NFC champion Seattle. He also had four interceptions, two sacks, eight passes defensed, and was a presence from sideline to sideline on the NFL's No. 2 unit.

Two Seahawks All-Pros also drew support in the voting: safety Earl Thomas (7 1/2 votes) and cornerback Richard Sherman (4).

(FIBA) Brazil, Greece headline FIBA World Cup wildcard winners

MANILA, Philippines - The cast is complete.

Brazil, Finland, Greece, and Turkey will be joining 20 other teams to complete the 24-team delegation in the FIBA World Cup slated from August 30 to September 14, 2014 in Spain.

The 4 countries earned the nod of the FIBA Central Board, emerging as the 4 awardees from 15 wildcard candidates on Saturday, February 1.

The criteria included sporting and promotional aspects, governance aspects, and economic aspects.

Finland finished in 9th place while Greece was 11th in the 2013 Eurobasket. Turkey did not even qualify after getting booted out in the first round.

Brazil was even more lethargic, having a winless 2013 FIBA Americas stint after parading an incomplete lineup.

(NFL) Seahawks beat Broncos 43-8 in Super Bowl

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) -- Waiting to get their hands on the Lombardi Trophy, the Seahawks were surrounded by security guards in orange jackets. It was the first time anyone in that color stopped them all night.

The Seahawks stayed true to their mantra to make each day a championship day. They made Super Bowl Sunday the best day of all with one of the greatest performances in an NFL title game - sparked by a defense that ranks among the best ever.

(UFC) Barao retains belt against Faber at UFC 169

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — Renan Barao was on a tear, trying to put away Urijah Faber with a series of fists to the head.

Faber attempted to flash a thumbs up — a sign he could still fight. Barao and an early stoppage didn't let him get that chance.

Barao made quick work of Faber in his latest title defense, dropping the challenger with a right and pummeling him with a series of shots to the head while retaining his 135-pound championship in the main event of UFC 169 on Saturday night.

(UFC) Jose Aldo Dismantles a Game Ricardo Lamas; Is Lightweight Title Shot Next?

Ricardo Lamas made the short trip from Chicago to Newark, N.J., to try and take the featherweight title from champion Jose Aldo at UFC 169 on Saturday night.

Unfortunately for Lamas, the trip home will feel quite a bit longer, as he’ll make it minus the belt that he so desperately sought.

Lamas showed a lot of movement and a variety of kicks early in the fight. He was the more aggressive fighter in the opening round, although Aldo checked most of his kicks, and landed harder and with greater accuracy, when he fired his weapons.

(UFC) José Aldo Likely Vacating Belt to Challenge Anthony Pettis for UFC Lightweight Title

UFC president Dana White, featherweight champion José Aldo, and lightweight champion Anthony Pettis all see eye to eye and are aiming to make a super-fight.

Aldo and White said at Saturday's UFC 169 post-fight press conference that a fight between the two divisional champions is the fight they want to make next, with White saying Pettis has agreed to the proposed match-up.

(UFC) Chael Sonnen vs. Wanderlei Silva Confirmed for UFC 173 in Support of Weidman vs. Belfort

UFC president Dana White at a media gathering in New York on Thursday said that whether Chris Weidman’s title defense against Vitor Belfort landed on July 5 or May 24, it was likely that the fight between The Ultimate Fighter Brazil 3 coaches Chael Sonnen and Wanderlei Silva would follow suit.

The UFC confirmed on Saturday night that Weidman vs. Belfort would headline UFC 173 on May 24. White, at the UFC 169 post-fight show on Fox Sports 1, also confirmed that Sonnen vs. Silva would also be featured on the Memorial Day Weekend fight card in Las Vegas.

(UFC) UFC 172 Fight Grows with Addition of Luke Rockhold vs. Tim Boetsch

After stumbling against Vitor Belfort and then rebounding against Costas Philippou, former Strikeforce champion Luke Rockhold wants to take the express route to UFC title contention.

His next opportunity to take a step towards the belt currently wrapped around Chris Weidman’s waist will come against Tim Boetsch.

Rockhold and Boetsch will square off as part of the UFC 172: Jones vs. Teixeira fight card slated for April 26 in Baltimore, Md. UFC officials announced the bout Tuesday morning.
