La Salle rallies past FEU, books first trip to finals in five years

After five long years, La Salle is back in the UAAP men’s basketball finals.

The Green Archers banked on a big second half explosion to overcome fast-starting Far Eastern U Tamaraws Wednesday night with a thrilling 71-68 victory that enabled them to advance to the finals of the Season 76 men’s tournament at the MOA Arena.

Three players–LA Revilla, Jeron Teng and Norbert Torres–tallied at least 15 points while taking turns in the team’s big wind-up as the second-seed La Salle gained a fitting follow-up to an impressive 74-69 victory last Saturday and booked its trip to the finals for the first time since 2008.

It was also the ninth straight win for La Salle, which will now have to wait for the winner of the other semis duel between top-seed National U and fourth-ranked University of Santo Tomas.

Carl Cruz tallied a game-high 16 points but top guards Terrence Romeo, the season MVP, RR Garcia and Mike Tolomia only combined for 27 markers on 10-of-35 shooting from the field, as the Tamaraws' campaign ended in disappointment after a hot 7-0 start.

nice one archers! sana tama ang prediction ko na it's gonna be NU vs LA SAlle
whoever wins? ok lang,,bet ko sia pareho, ;D

Best Player: Ryan Arana 16 pts 3 rebs

* Petron Blaze 101 Ginebra 94

Best Player: Arwind Santos 17 pts 13 rebs 4 blks

Ginebra's season comes to an end! But they came down fighting. Coming back from 25 points to cut it down to 1. The injuries to Kerby, Dylan,Japeth, and Mark summarizef it all

We have the draft to look forward to. With the 1st or 2nd pick, BGSM could finally nail the big man they desperately need. With a healthy lineup,Ginebra will come back strong next season. See you soon BGSM!

DeMarcus Cousins, Kings agree to $62 million extension

DeMarcus Cousins has reached agreement on a four-year, $62 million maximum contract extension with the Sacramento Kings, a league source told Yahoo Sports.

Cousins deal will include no early termination option, which could've been possible after the third year of the deal, a source said. After resisting the idea of giving Cousins a max deal without conditions in the contract, the Kings finally relented and gave the talented, but temperamental young center the offer he and his agents, Dan Fegan and Jarrin Akana, had sought in negotiations.

Cousins, 23, averaged 17 points and nearly 10 rebounds a game for the Kings last season. He was the fifth overall pick in the 2010 draft, and is the third member of his class – including Washington's John Wall and Indiana's Paul George – to earn a maximum contract extension.

New Kings owner Vivek Ranadive has grown fond of Cousins and his prodigious talent, and was determined to agree to the extension before the start of training camp next week, sources said.

Cousins has been punished several times with suspensions and benchings in his three NBA seasons, and the Kings are hoping that a new regime – including owner, GM and coach – will provide the organizational structure to help him mature into a legitimate franchise player.

The Sacramento Bee first reported there was an agreement in principle.

Heat signs Spoelstra to multiyear extension

MIAMI (AP) -- Erik Spoelstra has been with the Miami Heat for nearly two decades, and their relationship won't be ending anytime soon.

Spoelstra has signed a multiyear extension to remain as coach of the two-time defending NBA champion Heat, the team said Sunday afternoon. The move comes one day after the Heat announced several other front-office moves, including promoting Andy Elisburg to general manager and hiring Juwan Howard as an assistant coach.

NBA considering change to NBA Finals format

NEW YORK (AP) -- The NBA Finals could return to a 2-2-1-1-1 format.

The league's Competition Committee voted unanimously to recommend the change from the current 2-3-2 system and owners will vote on it next month at their meetings.

''The idea was raised at the Competition Committee and was well-received and the committee ultimately unanimously voted to recommend the change in format,'' NBA spokesman Tim Frank said Sunday.

If approved, it hasn't been decided if the change would begin with the 2014 finals.

The Competition Committee's vote was first reported by the Boston Herald.

The format was switched beginning in 1985, a recommendation Commissioner David Stern has said came in part from former Celtics boss Red Auerbach to reduce the cross-country trips between Boston and Los Angeles.

Critics argue it gives home-court advantage to the lower-seeded team in Game 5, which is often a pivotal game in a best-of-seven series.

Last season, the Miami Heat became just the fourth team to rally from 3-2 down by winning the final two on their home floor.

All other rounds in the NBA playoffs use the 2-2-1-1-1 format.
