(Tennis) Rafa Nadal takes another step closer to second Australian Open title

MELBOURNE, Australia — Top-ranked Rafael Nadal has advanced to the quarterfinals of the Australian Open after a 7-6 (3), 7-5, 7-6 (3) win over Kei Nishikori of Japan.

Nadal is trying to win the Australian Open for the second time — his first title came in 2009 — and secure the 14th major of his career, equal with Pete Sampras and three behind Roger Federer's leading total of 17. The Australian Open is the only major he hasn't won at least twice.

It's the seventh time in Nadal's last seven appearances at Melbourne Park that he's advanced to the quarterfinals. He didn't play the Australian Open last year due to a left knee injury and stomach virus.

Nadal will play 22-year-old Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov on Wednesday.

(Tennis) Federer reaches 41st Grand Slam quarterfinal at Aussie Open

MELBOURNE, Australia — Sixth-seeded Roger Federer has equaled Jimmy Connors record by reaching his 41st Grand Slam quarterfinal with a 6-3, 7-5, 6-4 win over Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the fourth round of the Australian Open on Monday.

It was also the 11th straight year the Swiss star has reached the quarters at Melbourne Park.

Federer and Tsonga met twice in the quarterfinals of Grand Slams last year, with the Swiss player winning their match at the Australian Open and the Frenchman prevailing at the French Open.

Federer next faces fourth-seeded Andy Murray in the quarterfinals. He has won just four of his last 14 matches against top-10 players, including Monday's victory over 10th-seeded Tsonga.

(NFL) Manning to Super Bowl, Broncos beat Pats 26-16

DENVER (AP) -- Peyton Manning stuffed the football into his helmet and handed it to an equipment man for safekeeping.

The connection: Flawless, as usual.

The keepsake: Certainly one he'll want to hang on to.

The Broncos quarterback had an answer for everyone Sunday - from Tom Brady to the New England defense to anyone who thought he couldn't win the big one.

Manning is taking the Broncos on a trip to New York for the Super Bowl after another of his impeccably crafted victories - this time, a 26-16 win over the Patriots on Sunday in the AFC title game.

(NFL) Seahawks rally, beat 49ers 23-17 for NFC title

SEATTLE (AP) -- Richard Sherman did a CenturyLink Leap.

Golden Tate grabbed a 12th Man flag and circled the field with it.

Even team owner Paul Allen made an appearance and gave a victory speech.

The Seattle Seahawks are headed to the Big Apple for the Super Bowl.

''To see all our work that we put in - the mornings, the nights, the weights, all your life, as a young player and in the NFL,'' Malcolm Smith said after his end zone interception with 22 seconds remaining clinched the 23-17 victory over the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday. ''It's amazing.''

(NFL) Denver gets early money and favorite role

LAS VEGAS (AP) -- Oddsmakers had trouble picking the favorite in what figures to be one of the most evenly matched - and heavily bet - Super Bowls ever.

Bettors knew who they wanted, though, putting early money on Denver and making the Broncos a slight favorite to beat the Seattle Seahawks in most of this city's legal betting parlors.

Denver was favored by 1 point at several books in the early betting, while others had the Broncos as high as a 3-point pick. The move to the Broncos came after some books had initially made the Seahawks as much as a 2-point pick in the game.

(Tennis) Berdych boots out Ferrer to book place in Australian Open semifinals

MELBOURNE, Australia — Tomas Berdych dominated early and then withstood a comeback attempt by third-seeded David Ferrer in a 6-1, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 win on Tuesday that earned him a spot in the Australian Open semifinals for the first time.

No. 7 Berdych will play the winner of Tuesday's later quarterfinal between three-time defending champion Novak Djokovic and No. 8 Stanislas Wawrinka.

Berdych clinched the three-hour, four-minute match on his second match point when Ferrer's return of serve went wide. The 2010 Wimbledon champion has now reached the semifinals of every major, breaking a sequence of three quarterfinal defeats at Melbourne Park.

Berdych has now won three of his last five matches against Ferrer, a longtime top five contender.

(Tennis) Comeback kids Federer and Murray brace for major duel in Last 8 Down Under

MELBOURNE, Australia — As Roger Federer sees it, he and Andy Murray are making a comeback from a year of ups and downs.

That's putting it mildly.

For 32-year-old Federer, the winner of 17 Grand Slam titles, 2013 was the year that his tenure near the top went into sharp decline. He slipped out of the Top 5 and failed to reach a Grand Slam final for the first time since 2002. He struggled with back problems, split with his coach and it appeared that age was taking its toll.

For Murray, the year included a stupendous success. He won Wimbledon, becoming the first British man in 77 years to win the coveted title at the All England Club. A few months later he underwent back surgery that forced him to sit out the last three months of the season.

(Tennis) Two-time finalist Li Na books place in last four at Australian Open

MELBOURNE, Australia — Two-time finalist Li Na stayed in contention for another Australian Open title match after beating Flavia Pennetta, 6-2, 6-2, Tuesday to advance to the semifinals at Melbourne Park.

After beating two 16-year-olds in the opening rounds and saving a match point against Lucie Safarova in the third, No. 4-seeded Li was relentless in defeating the 28th-seeded Pennetta, who buried her face in her towel during a changeover while trailing 5-0 in the opening set.

(Tennis) Radwanska marches on to semis after ending Azarenka's Australian Open run

MELBOURNE, Australia — Victoria Azarenka's 18-match winning streak at the Australian Open ended in an upset 6-1, 5-7, 6-0 quarterfinal loss to Agnieszka Radwanska on Wednesday to continue the flow of stars tumbling out of the season's first major.

Fifth-seeded Radwanska ended her own streak of three consecutive quarterfinal defeats at the Australian Open with a stunning display of versatile shot-making that shocked and confused the big-hitting Azarenka.

(Tennis) Djokovic upset by Wawrinka in Aussie quarterfinals

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) -- Novak Djokovic's bid for a fourth consecutive Australian Open title ended in a dramatic five-set quarterfinal loss to Stanislas Wawrinka that opens up the prospects of a new major champion.

No. 8-seeded Wawrinka lost 14 head-to-heads to Djokovic until a 2-6, 6-4, 6-2, 3-6, 9-7 win on Tuesday night put him into a semifinal that very few expected against No. 7 Tomas Berdych.

( MLB ) Masahiro Tanaka and New York Yankees Reportedly Agree on 7- Year $155M Contract

Tanaka is coming off an extraordinary season for the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles in Nippon Professional Baseball. He went 24-0 with a microscopic 1.27 ERA and 0.94 WHIP. He tossed eight complete games, including two shutouts, while striking out nearly eight batters per nine innings .

Even in an era where the value of a win from a pitching perspective is on the decline due to the rise of advanced statistics, coming out on top in 24 of 28 appearances without picking up a single loss is impressive, regardless of the league .

Tanaka's $155M deal is 5th largest ever by a pitcher, behind Kershaw (7-$210), Verlander (7-$180) , Felix (7-$175) & CC's original (8-$160)

Two of the NBA’s worst teams are the most valuable franchises

For the second consecutive year the New York Knicks are the NBA’s most valuable franchise at a value of $1.4 billion. The second most valuable franchise belongs to the Los Angeles Lakers at $1.35 billion.
Despite both franchises taken major steps back this season, both franchises increased record profits as the NBA is enjoying it’s best monetary stretch in their history. In fact, even teams that have lost money in previous seasons like the Charlotte Bobcats , Milwaukee Bucks and Memphis Grizzlies all turned a profit.
