Gilas Pilipinas finally awakens, shows might against Jordan for second FIBA Asia win

FIBA Asia/Nuki Sabio

The Philippine national men’s basketball team started slowly once more, but woke up in time in the third quarter to run away with a 77-71 win over Jordan in the FIBA Asia Championship on Friday at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Like in its first outing against Saudi Arabia, Gilas Pilipinas was luggish in the opening half, falling behind, 38-33, at halftime.

Led by the long-armed defense and hustle of Gabe Norwood, the Filipinos came out visibly energized after the break. They hounded Jordan’s ballhandlers into turnovers that opened up the match, as the Philippines unleashed a furious 20-2 run.

Gilas outscored Jordan, 24-9, in the third quarter for a 57-47 spread heading into the final period.

The Philippines opened up a 14-point advantage in the fourth quarter on two free throws by Japeth Aguilar. But sloppy play from Gilas allowed Jordan to go on a 10-2 run to its deficit to six points, 63-57.

Jordan had a chance to cut the lead further, but Norwood chased down a fastbreak layup attempt by Hani Alfaraj, leading to an easy layup by Jayson Castro. That sparked a 7-2 run to give the Philippines a 70-59 edge with 4:23 left in the game.

Mohammad Hadrab, who led Jordan in scoring with 19, scored five quick points to cut the deficit to just six points. Gilas captain Jimmy Alapag responded with a corner three-pointer in the next possession to push the lead back up to nine points, 73-64.

Naturalized swingman Jimmy Baxter hit a fastbreak layup and was fouled with 36 seconds left. He missed his free throw, but Wesam Al-Sous recovered the miss and was fouled by Japeth Aguilar. The hotshot Jordan guard scored two more free throws to cut the deficit to just five points, 73-68, with 35 seconds remaining.

Jordan forced a turnover on Gary David in the next play, but Marcus Douthit recovered with a steal of his own. David nailed two free throws to ice the game for the Philippines.

Against its much taller opponents, the Philippines’ shooters were on target, nailing 44 percent of their three-point attempts, with Jeff Chan (5-of-7) and Ranidel De Ocampo (3-of-6) leading the way.

They got the job done on defense as well, forcing 17 turnovers and allowing Jordan to shoot just 39 percent from the field. Baxter, who exploded for 30 points in his first outing, was limited to just 14.

Chan led the way for the Philippines with 17 points, Jayson Castro sliced his way into the lane for 16, while Norwood had a dazzling all-around game with eight points, eight rebounds, four assists, two steals, and two blocks.

The Philippines will march on to a highly-anticipated matchup with Chinese Taipei on Saturday.

Jordan, which lost its second straight match in Group A, will take on Saudi Arabia on the same day.

Most of us don't know this...

Did you know that the Philippine National Basketball Team :

* is the First and Only Asian country to take Bronze Medal in World Basketball Championship now known as FIBA Basketball World Cup (1954 Brazil FIBA World Championship)

kung di lang may daga si Fajardo malaki maitutulong nya sa team .

good defence by gabe on Baxter , solid interior defence by Douthit and Japeth , 3 points pumapasok , and the speed and the heart of Jason Castro William , yan ang summary kagabi kaya tayo nanalo.
sana against taipei mea ganon ulit . at bawasan nila mga TO's at foul nila dapat .

Gilas Pilipinas players hurting, but remain positive after loss to Chinese Taipei

FIBA Asia/Nuki Sabio

Jeff Chan is still reeling from the first loss of the Philippine national men’s basketball team in the FIBA Asia Championship at the hands of Chinese Taipei.

“Masakit yung pagkatalo kasi pakiramdam namin panalo na eh,” he told InterAKTV in an exclusive interview.

But Chan, who struggled from the field and finished scoreless against the Taiwanese, said that the team is aching to bounce back.

“Dahil wala kaming game bukas, we might use it as a time to think and move forward from this loss,” he said.

Despite the loss, Chan’s teammate at Rain or Shine Gabe Norwood remained positive

“We put it all out there but we came up short. Hopefully, Lord-willing, we get another shot at them. We’ll bounce back for sure,” he said.

Naturalized center Marcus Douthit said it’s not time to push the panic button.

“Coach [Chot Reyes] said it’s a long tournament. We’ll put this loss behind us and hope we see them down the road again,” said Douthit, who noted that the Philippines outplayed Chinese Taipei for the most part, but the Taiwanese just got hot at the right time.

“We beat them in almost all categories but they shot the ball well,” he said. “We had 20 more attempts than they did but we cannot put the ball in the hole.”

Gilas captain Jimmy Alapag gave credit to Chinese Taipei sharpshooters who sizzled from long distance.

“It was tough. With the crowd support we had tonight, we should have come up with a win, but we fell short,” said Alapag. “Anytime a team shoots 15 of 30 three-point shots, it’s tough to beat a team that shoots that well.”

For Jayson Castro, the loss was also a learning experience.

“We were up by 13 at the start of the fourth, then parang panalo na kami. Yun ang bad habit namin when we’re up by 10 parang relaxed na kami. Tama si coach na we cannot celebrate. We also failed to communicate on defense,” said Castro.
