Timberwolves beat Pistons 114-101
Associated Press
MINNEAPOLIS -- The Minnesota Timberwolves can't afford any more lazy starts like the one that got them beat two nights ago. They can't afford any more losses to teams with inferior records. Their one last, desperate playoff push begins right now.
The Detroit Pistons are in the same boat. But they sure aren't playing like it.
Kevin Love had 28 points, 14 rebounds and five assists, and the Timberwolves led by 31 points in the third quarter en route to a 114-101 victory over the Pistons on Friday night.
Kevin Martin scored 24 points and Ricky Rubio added 11 points, nine assists and eight rebounds for the Timberwolves, who trail the Dallas Mavericks by five games for the eighth and final playoff spot in the West with 21 games to go.
"We have to have more discipline in what we do," said coach Rick Adelman, referring to the Wolves letting the Pistons back into the game in the fourth. "I don't care what the score is. We have to learn. It's hurt us in the past and it will hurt us again if we don't know the time and score."
Greg Monroe had 20 points and 15 rebounds, and Will Bynum scored all 17 of his points in the fourth quarter for the Pistons. But Detroit shot 40 percent and lost for the ninth time in 11 games, yet another demoralizing performance for a team that started the night just three games back of eighth-place Atlanta in the East.
Nikola Pekovic had 17 points and nine rebounds for Minnesota (31-30), which matched its win total of last season and led by 28 when the final quarter opened.
But Bynum got going in the fourth, and his driving layup cut the lead to 112-101 with a minute to play. But the deficit proved too big for the Pistons to overcome.
The battle under the boards between two of the most physical, tenacious rebounding front lines in the league never materialized. Monroe picked up two quick fouls and a technical in the first quarter that limited his effectiveness early and Andre Drummond, who was averaging 13.0 rebounds per game and leads the league in offensive rebounds, had just two points and one rebound while playing 15 minutes over the first three quarters due to foul trouble.
Drummond finished with six points and seven rebounds before fouling out.
Game notes
Brandon Jennings had 17 points, five assists and five rebounds for the Pistons, but did not play in the fourth quarter. ... Wolves backup PG J.J. Barea, the subject of boos from the home crowd against the Knicks, had another rough game, with four points on 2-for-8 shooting.

Carmelo Anthony, Knicks cruise to easy win over Jazz
Associated Press
NEW YORK -- There's little margin for error, and the New York Knicks know it.
They need a big finish to the regular season, and after the way they've started the last two games, maybe they have one in them.
Carmelo Anthony scored 18 of his 29 points in the first quarter, sending the Knicks to a rare easy night in a 108-81 victory over the Utah Jazz on Friday.
With a long way to go to get back into playoff position, the Knicks won their second straight following a seven-game losing streak. They began a favorable portion of their schedule by opening an early double-digit lead and remaining comfortably ahead the rest of the way.
They scored 39 points in the first quarter, their best in any period this season, after scoring 38 in the opening 12 minutes at Minnesota on Wednesday.
Gordon Hayward and Alec Burks each scored 18 for the Jazz, who dropped their fifth straight and fell to 0-5 on their six-game, nine-day trip that ends Saturday in Philadelphia.

Jefferson, Walker lead Bobcats past Cavs 101-92
Associated Press
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- When Michael Jordan speaks, people still listen.
The Charlotte Bobcats owner praised his team during a pregame locker room speech Friday night, but warned his players it's only going to get tougher from here on out.
Jordan spoke directly about the Bobcats potentially making the playoffs -- something that seemed inconceivable five months ago for a team that was 7-59 and 21-61 the previous two seasons.
"He talked to them about the progress that he had seen and praised them for their attitude and togetherness as a team," coach Steve Clifford said. "And he let them know, which I thought was perfect, the toughest part is ahead. We made our first step and it now gets tougher. It was a great message."
A message that apparently inspired the Bobcats, currently seventh in the Eastern Conference.
Al Jefferson scored 28 points, Kemba Walker had 20 points and 14 assists, and the Bobcats (29-33) defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers 101-92 for their sixth straight win at home, surpassing their win total from the previous two seasons combined.
It was an important win for the Bobcats, who improved to 3-0 this season against the Cavaliers and now own the tiebreaker against both Detroit and Cleveland, the ninth- and 10th-place teams in the East.
"If that don't motivate you, I don't know what will," Jefferson said of Jordan addressing the team.
It was a huge loss for Cleveland.
Dion Waiters and Luol Deng each scored 19 points for the Cavaliers, who began the night 3 1/2 games behind Atlanta for the final playoff spot in the East. They now trail Charlotte by 5 1/2 games.
Jefferson shot 12 of 18 from the field and reached 20 points for the 22nd time in his last 24 games. Chris Douglas-Roberts added 14 points, including four 3-pointers, and a season-high nine rebounds.
Charlotte's six-game home winning streak is its longest since a seven-game run in March 2010.

Rajon Rondo, Celtics dominate, halt Nets' win streak
Associated Press
BOSTON -- Jared Sullinger was at a loss to explain how his Boston Celtics could win while committing a season-high 28 turnovers.
"I honestly don't know," he said.
Try this: 20 points, nine assists and seven rebounds by Rajon Rondo, a 62-37 rebounding advantage by the Celtics and a horrible 4-for-30 shooting performance on 3-pointers by the Nets.
The result was a 91-84 victory in which Brooklyn never led and had its four-game winning streak stopped Friday night.
The rebounding "was obviously the difference in the game for us, from our standpoint. That, and they missed the 3s," Boston coach Brad Stevens said. "I'd like to say that it was this outstanding 3-point defense, but I think when you re-watch it, it's a lot of open 3s they missed."
The Nets were led by Joe Johnson with 21 points and Deron Williams with 20 as they fell back to .500 two days after going over the mark for the first time this season.
Jason Collins, the NBA's first openly gay player, did not play for the Nets for the first time in seven games since signing a 10-day contract Feb. 23. Collins, who played for the Celtics last season, signed a second 10-day contract Wednesday.
The Celtics got 15 points from Jeff Green and 14 from Jerryd Bayless. Sullinger led all rebounders with 12. But Rondo was the key, despite his seven turnovers.
Paul Pierce scored 10 points in his second appearance in Boston since the blockbuster trade that sent him and Kevin Garnett to the Nets in the offseason. Pierce spent 15 seasons with the Celtics after they drafted him with the 10th pick in 1998.
He received light applause when he was introduced with the other Nets starters. Garnett missed his fourth straight game with back spasms.
Pierce and Garnett each scored six points in their first game in Boston this season, an 85-79 Brooklyn win Jan. 26. Both were emotional during and after video tributes on the video screen above center court.
Game notes
Celtics C Vitor Faverani will miss the rest of the season after having arthroscopic surgery on his left knee to repair a torn lateral meniscus on Friday. ... Pierce made four of 11 shots and is 6-for-24 with 20 points in three games against his former team.

Mavs rally past Blazers after losing 30-point lead
Associated Press
DALLAS -- Dirk Nowitzki says he wasn't thinking about the last time the Dallas Mavericks blew a 30-point lead and lost.
The biggest collapse in franchise history was a long time ago, and he was too busy trying to make sure it didn't happen again.
Nowitzki scored 22 points, Devin Harris hit the go-ahead shot in the final minute and the Mavericks rallied in the fourth quarter after blowing their huge first-half lead, beating the Portland Trail Blazers 103-98 Friday night.
"You're just out there battling," Nowitzki said. "They're a very, very good team. They came back a lot quicker than we wanted it to be, but we kept fighting and got the win."
LaMarcus Aldridge finished with 30 for Portland, including 18 in the third quarter when the Blazers went in front for the first time at 69-67 after trailing 44-14 early in the second quarter.
But Nowitzki didn't pause to remember Dec. 6, 2002, when the Mavericks lost at the Los Angeles Lakers 105-103 after leading 66-36 early in the third quarter.
Dallas took its first 30-point lead at 40-10 on Brandan Wright's alley-oop dunk from Ellis early in the second quarter, one of many easy breakaway baskets early.
Thomas Robinson had six points on a 12-1 run that started Portland's comeback, getting the Blazers within 19. That was Dallas' margin to begin the third quarter, when Aldridge took over, scoring six straight early in the period and another six straight later.
The Blazers went ahead for the first time at 69-67 on a putback by Aldridge.
"It was unbelievable," Wright said. "We got outscored by I don't know how much after that first quarter being up 40-10. They went on a heck of a run, but all it's going to say in the paper tomorrow is that we got the `W."
Jose Calderon had 19 for Dallas, including 15 in the first quarter. Ellis had 17 points, eight rebounds and seven assists. Nowitzki had six assists and five rebounds. Harris finished with 12 points.

Kenneth Faried's 32 key Nuggets' win over reeling Lakers
Associated Press
DENVER -- Reflecting on his game during a monthlong recovery from a broken left rib has helped Ty Lawson come back strong.
Kenneth Faried scored a career-high 32 points, Lawson had 30 in his third game back from the injury and the Denver Nuggets beat the skidding Los Angeles Lakers 134-126 on Friday night.
"When you sit out, you watch a lot of tape from a lot of games and I could see things opening up or things I wasn't taking," said Lawson, averaging 27 points and 11.6 assists since his return. "It's been helping me shooting the 3s, and making them, and it's opened up the rest of my game, the mid-range shots, getting to the basket and getting more assists."
Lawson shot 5 of 7 on 3-pointers and had 17 assists, matching his career high. Faried grabbed 13 rebounds and Wilson Chandler scored 19 points. Timofey Mozgov and Evan Fournier added 13 points apiece for the Nuggets, who swept the three-game season series.
Fournier said it's evident by Lawson's recent play that he put his time away from the game to good use.
Los Angeles got 27 points from Pau Gasol but could not avoid its third straight defeat and sixth in eight games. This one ensured the club's first losing season since going 34-48 in 2004-05.
Jordan Farmar and Robert Sacre had 24 points apiece for the Lakers, who were coming off a 142-94 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers on Thursday. The 48-point defeat was the biggest in franchise history for the Lakers, who have given up an average of 136 points in their last three losses.
Game notes
Gasol played in his 898th career game, ranking 29th among active players. ... The Nuggets' previous high in the first half was 69 points against Orlando on Jan. 11. ... Faried had his 58th career double-double. Denver is 47-11 in those games. ... The Lakers had 47 rebounds to 43 for Denver, snapping a string of 11 consecutive games in which they were outrebounded.

Hawks no problem for David Lee, Warriors in return home
Associated Press
OAKLAND, Calif. -- Golden State Warriors coach Mark Jackson asked his players a simple question during Friday's morning shootaround: How many of them had ever been on a team 14 games over .500?
Only veterans Jermaine O'Neal, Steve Blake and Andre Iguodala raised their hands.
With so many home games remaining, the opportunity in front of the Warriors is rare. Golden State took another step forward Friday night by easing past the Atlanta Hawks 111-97 for its third straight win.
"We're chasing greatness," Jackson said. "We're not going to be satisfied. We're going to continue to try to chalk up Ws, continue to battle and continue to celebrate where we are as a basketball team. It's a great time. And if nobody else knows it, we know it."
David Lee had 18 points and six rebounds, and O'Neal came off the bench to add 17 points and eight rebounds to lift the Warriors (39-24) a season-high 15 games over .500 with a relatively smooth win.
Iguodala and Stephen Curry each scored 13 points to help Golden State build a 66-52 halftime lead and go ahead by 20 in the fourth quarter. The Warriors, fresh off a 4-2 road trip, are 8-2 since the All-Star break and beginning to look like the team that roared to the second-round of the playoffs last year.
Paul Millsap had 16 points and seven rebounds after missing the last five games because of a bruised right knee for the Hawks, who have lost five straight. Mike Scott added 14 points and DeMarre Carroll and Jeff Teague scored nine points apiece as Atlanta continued its late-season slide.
The only major setback for the Warriors came when shooting guard Klay Thompson limped to the locker room six minutes into the first quarter with a strained lower back. He did not return for precautionary reasons, the team said.
Thompson has been Golden State's most durable player the past three years. He has played in a franchise-record 211 straight regular-season games to start his career.
Game Notes
Curry has made at least one 3-pointer in 51 consecutive games, the longest active streak in the NBA after Kyle Korver's league-record 127-game streak ended in Atlanta's loss at Portland on Wednesday. Korver was 1-for-5 shooting from beyond the arc against the Warriors.

NBA Power Rankings: New team takes over No. 1
(from
Y! Sports
)
1. San Antonio Spurs (46-16; last week's ranking: 5): The Spurs jump back to No. 1 with six straight wins and nine in their past 10 games. San Antonio also now owns the NBA's top record.
2. Houston Rockets (44-19; last week's ranking: 4): Houston has won five straight games with a big test at Oklahoma City on Tuesday. Houston is only two games behind the Thunder.
3. Los Angeles Clippers (44-20; last week's ranking: 6): The Clippers have won a season-high seven straight games. Los Angeles has scored more than 100 points in 20 straight games.
4. Oklahoma City Thunder (46-17; last week's ranking: 3): The Thunder fell to second in the West with their surprising loss to the Lakers on Sunday. Oklahoma City has split its past 10 games.
5. Indiana Pacers (46-17; last week's ranking: 1): Indiana has lost a season-high four straight. Help is on the way: The Pacers face Boston, Philadelphia (twice), Detroit and New York next.
6. Miami Heat (43-17; last week's ranking: 2): The Heat have lost three straight games and are 10-9 on the road against the East. Next up are the Wizards, who won their last meeting on Jan. 15.
7. Golden State Warriors (40-24; last week's ranking: 8 ): All-Star guard Stephen Curry has been dealing with a right quad injury. Steve Blake has provided quality help.
8. Portland Trail Blazers (42-21; last week's ranking: 7): Portland, losers of two straight games, continues its road trip at Memphis, San Antonio and New Orleans. Depending on how the trip goes, the Blazers could slip more.
9. Dallas Mavericks (38-26; last week's ranking: 10): Dallas has a tough road trip ahead at Golden State, Utah and Oklahoma City. The Mavericks are just 7-11 on the road versus West teams.
10. Memphis Grizzlies (36-26; last week's ranking: 11): The Grizzlies have won seven of their past 10 and are tied with the Suns for the eighth and final playoff spot in the West.
11. Phoenix Suns (36-26; last week's ranking: 9): Eric Bledsoe (knee) is expected back Wednesday, Leandro Barbosa, who is recovering from a hand injury, doesn't expect to return until the playoffs, Barbosa told Yahoo Sports.
12. Toronto Raptors (35-26; last week's ranking: 12): The Raptors have won three straight games and nine of their past 11 overall to move up to third in the lackluster East playoff race.
13. Chicago Bulls (35-28; last week's ranking: 13): Joakim Noah's play should put him in consideration for the NBA's Defensive Player of the Year award – and possibly even first-team All-NBA center.
14. Washington Wizards (33-29; last week's ranking: 14): Washington plays at Miami on Monday, hosts Charlotte on Wednesday and then goes back to Florida to play Orlando on Friday. Not the easiest travel schedule.
15. Minnesota Timberwolves (31-31; last week's ranking: 15): Minnesota's already bleak playoff hopes in the West became dimmer after it dropped the first two games of a four-game homestand.
16. Brooklyn Nets (31-30; last week's ranking: 16): The Nets are winners of seven straight home games and seven of their past 10 games overall. They have a tough slate ahead with Toronto, Miami, Washington and Phoenix.
17. New Orleans Pelicans (26-37; last week's ranking: 18): All-Star Anthony Davis has surpassed 20 points and 10 rebounds in 22 games this season. He has 30 double-doubles.
18. Charlotte Bobcats (29-34; last week's ranking: 17): The Bobcats will likely make the playoffs. None of the struggling East teams underneath them are putting up a fight.
19. Atlanta Hawks (26-35; last week's ranking: 19): Kyle Korver told Yahoo Sports he heard "a rumor" that a coach offered money to his team if they stopped his 3-point streak, which recently ended at a record 127 games.
20. Denver Nuggets (27-35; last week's ranking: 22): The Nuggets play their next four games on the road in the East. Denver is 5-6 in away games versus East teams.
21. Sacramento Kings (22-41; last week's ranking: 23): D-League Reno assignee Royce White is averaging 5.5 points on 30.8 percent shooting from the field and 4.5 rebounds in two games.
22. Utah Jazz (22-41; last week's ranking: 24): First-year Hawks forward Paul Millsap returns to Utah on Monday. The All-Star played his first seven seasons with Utah before signing with Atlanta.
23. Los Angeles Lakers (22-42; last week's ranking: 27): Newcomer Kent Bazemore has scored in double figures in all but one of his 10 games since being traded from Golden State.
24. Cleveland Cavaliers (24-40; last week's ranking: 20): The Cavaliers' hopes of making a run at the East's final playoff seed have taken a hit with four straight losses. Over their next six games, they will face the Suns, Warriors, Clippers, Heat, Thunder and Rockets.
25. Detroit Pistons (24-39; last week's ranking: 21): The Pistons have lost seven of eight and 10 of their past 12. Center Andre Drummond has played great, despite the team's horrible season.
26. Boston Celtics (22-41; last week's ranking: 25): With his 18 assists on Sunday versus Detroit, Rajon Rondo reached 4,101 for his career, passing Bill Russell for fifth-place in team history.
27. New York Knicks (24-40; last week's ranking: 26): Even if Phil Jackson becomes the Knicks' team president, will it make a difference in Carmelo Anthony's decision to re-sign?
28. Orlando Magic (19-45; last week's ranking: 28): Orlando has the NBA's worst record on the road. The Bucks own the NBA's worst at home. Something has to give when the Magic face Milwaukee on Monday.
29. Philadelphia 76ers (15-47, last week's ranking: 29): Rookie center Nerlens Noel (knee) tweeted out "4-4-14," sparking speculation the Malden, Mass., native will debut that day at Boston.
30. Milwaukee Bucks (12-50; last week's ranking: 30): The Bucks-Magic game on Monday is also a matchup for two teams vying for top draft lottery odds. Philadelphia is in the mix, too.
