Durant scores 36, Thunder beat Spurs 111-105
AP - Sports
SAN ANTONIO (AP) -- Teams are finding out there's little they can do to stop Kevin Durant.
Durant had 36 points to offset Tony Parker's season-high 37, and Oklahoma City survived a testy 111-105 victory over San Antonio on Wednesday night, their third win this season over the defending Western Conference champions.
Durant is averaging 38.1 points in his last 11 games, helping the Thunder reclaim the Western Conference's record with a five-game winning streak and an 8-3 mark.
''Kevin did his thing down the stretch, it was pretty remarkable,'' San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said.
Reggie Jackson gave Durant all the help he needed, matching his season high with 27 points while handing out eight assists.
Durant and Jackson combined for 22 points on 9-for-15 shooting in a 35-point fourth quarter for Oklahoma City (33-10).
Jackson had 11 consecutive points early in the fourth, blowing past Parker for layups to give the Thunder a 94-89 lead with 8 minutes left.
''He has had great games against the Spurs,'' Oklahoma City coach Scott Brooks said. ''I can't put my finger on it. We want him to play aggressive basketball on both ends of the floor. I thought he did a good job of finding spots on the floor that he can finish around the rim.''
Jackson averages 13.2 points, but has scored 23.7 points against the Spurs this season.
Duncan and Boris Diaw scored 14 points each, Marco Belinelli had 13 points and Manu Ginobili added 10 points. Duncan added 13 rebounds, but San Antonio (32-10) struggled to overcome the loss of their top defensive stopper, Kawhi Leonard.
Durant finished 12 for 22, but struggled to get his shot off against the snug defense of the 6-foot-7 Leonard, who has a 7-4 wingspan. Leonard left the game late in the first half after sustaining a non-displaced fracture in his right hand. His status is unknown, but a similar injury is expected to sideline Danny Green for a month.
''It's tough, we're dropping like flies right now,'' Duncan said. ''Losing Kawhi was huge, especially in a game like tonight.''
Durant scored 24 points after Leonard left the game with 3 minutes left in the first half.
With Leonard out, the Spurs rotated Belinelli, Ginobili and 6-3 former Texas Longhorns teammate Cory Joseph on the 6-9 Durant. San Antonio even attempted a zone at one point to slow Durant to no avail.
''(He guarded Durant) just one time in the zone - he just shot over me,'' Parker said. ''He is on fire right now anyways. He played great tonight. You just have to give them credit.''
The Spurs used a physical defense against Durant with Leonard out, especially when Ginobili drew the assignment. The tough play angered Durant, who twice lowered his shoulder and dropped Ginobili. Both plays resulted in non-calls, which incensed Popovich.
The Spurs coach screamed at officials while Durant appeared to yell at Popovich. Popovich was assessed a technical foul, which Durant angrily sank with 1:12 to give Oklahoma City a 55-51 lead with 1:19 left in the first half.
Durant dismissed the heated emotion just as quickly as he did any psychological boost the Thunder will get from beating the rival Spurs three times.
NOTES: Splitter (sprained right shoulder) and Green (broken left index finger) both missed the game. . San Antonio has a 54-22 record at home over Oklahoma City. ... Bonner, the Spurs' fun-loving forward, is playing along with the ribbing he is getting about the mask he must wear to protect the broken nose he sustained Friday against the Portland Trail Blazers. Duncan, who owns a vehicle customization shop, offered a custom-paint job for the clear mask and Parker joked that Bonner could ''scare Durant'' with it. Jeff McDonald of the San Antonio Express-News jokingly asked if the injury ends Bonner's hopes of a modeling career once his NBA days are over. ''I can still be a hand model,'' Bonner said.

Deng a non-factor as Bulls beat Cavaliers
AP - Sports
CLEVELAND (AP) -- Luol Deng misses his close friends in Chicago. The Bulls seem to be getting along fine without him.
D.J. Augustin scored 27 points in a start for Kirk Hinrich and Taj Gibson matched a career high with 26 filling in for Carlos Boozer as the Bulls improved to 7-2 since trading the popular Deng with a 98-87 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Wednesday night.
Augustin and Mike Dunleavy hit 3-pointers down the stretch to pace the Bulls, who have won three straight, nine of 11 and moved over .500 for the first time since Nov. 22.
Chicago reached the season's mid-point at 21-20, not where many expected the Bulls to be sitting after dealing Deng.
The two-time All-Star was a non-factor in his first game against his former team, which traded him for draft picks on Jan. 6. Deng went just 2 of 11 from the field and scored 11 points in 40 minutes.
''It was strange,'' Deng said. ''It's the Cavs versus the Bulls and not so much about me. In terms of me, I could have played better.''
Joakim Noah had 18 rebounds for the Bulls, who appeared to be looking toward the future when they traded Deng, not long after losing superstar Derrick Rose to a season-ending injury.
But the Bulls aren't fading away as coach Tom Thibodeau has them playing with their usual defensive tenacity.
Deng's not around, but the Bulls remain as tough as always.
''It's one of the things I respect about our team,'' Thibodeau said. ''They respond to every challenge. They have a lot of heart. They're playing together. Each day they have the right approach. If someone's out, the next five get in there and get the job done. We're short-handed. We understand how hard we have to play to give ourselves a chance to win.''
Kyrie Irving scored 26 to lead Cleveland, which has dropped the first two games of a five-game homestand. The Cavs have lost all of their momentum after going 3-2 on the road.
Although they were missing two starters in Boozer (calf) and Hinrich (hamstring), the Bulls had more than enough to hold off the Cavaliers.
Dunleavy added 22 points for the Bulls, who got just four points from their bench.
Waiters had 15 for Cleveland.
Deng spent 10 seasons with the Bulls, and the 28-year-old knew it would be challenging to oppose his ex-teammates.
Before the opening tip, Deng ran over to Chicago's bench and hugged Thibodeau and shook hands with all of the team's assistant coaches.
''It says a lot about who he is,'' Thibodeau said. ''That didn't surprise me.''
Gibson said there were some awkward moments going against Deng.
''It felt weird,'' Gibson said. ''There was tension before the game because we weren't talking. It's like Tibs said, 'We love him but we're going to go knock him on his butt if he tries to score. After the game, we're going to be friends.'''
NOTES: Deng spent nearly 20 minutes after the shootaround discussing his days in Chicago, which ended shortly after he rejected a three-year, $30 million contract extension, an offer and pay cut that he and his agents didn't find adequate. Asked if he would consider returning to the Bulls as a free agent this summer, Deng took a swipe at Chicago's front office. ''Maybe they'll offer me three years, $30 million,'' he cracked. ''That might be an option to take.'' ... Noah has recorded at least 10 rebounds in 14 straight games, the longest stretch in franchise history since Dennis Rodman posted 43 straight in '97.

Hawks hang on to beat Magic 112-109
AP - Sports
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) -- Road victories don't come easily for the Atlanta Hawks.
Atlanta lost a 19-point lead in the fourth quarter before coming back to hit six free throws in the final 40 seconds and secure a 112-109 victory over the Orlando Magic on Wednesday night.
Paul Millsap had 24 points and Jeff Teague added 23 to help the Hawks earn just their seventh road victory of the season.
Victor Oladipo led Orlando with 24 points. Tobias Harris had 19 points and 12 rebounds, and Jameer Nelson finished with 17 points.
The Magic have lost 12 of their last 13 overall, and fell to 1-14 this season without starting center Nik Vucevic, who continues to recover from a concussion.
NOTES: Atlanta's Kyle Korver extended his NBA record to 110 consecutive games with at least one made 3-pointer. ... Orlando fell to 1-24 when its opponent scores 100 or more points. ... Vucevic missed his ninth straight game due to a concussion. Magic coach Jacque Vaughn said he isn't sure where Vucevic is in the league's concussion protocol, saying only that ''He's still in the doctor's hands.''

Jefferson lifts Bobcats past Clippers 95-91
AP - Sports
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- It took three quarters, but the Charlotte Bobcats finally were able to shut down Blake Griffin.
Then they shut down the high-powered Los Angeles Clippers, 95-91 Wednesday night.
Griffin scored 26 points in the first three quarters, but was limited to one point in the final 12 minutes, when he was 0 for 4 from the field, including a pair of misses in the final 20 seconds.
Al Jefferson had 24 points and 10 rebounds to lead Charlotte to its first win over the Clippers in their last seven tries. The veteran center was 12 of 23 from the field as the Bobcats won for the third time in their last four games at home.
Jefferson was a beast down low.
He came in with the hot hand for the Bobcats, averaging 25.5 points and 12.7 rebounds while shooting 55.8 percent over the last six games and didn't let up against the Clippers.
The Bobcats didn't seem to have an answer for Griffin early as he proved too physical for McRoberts and Cody Zeller in the low post and too quick for Jefferson. But as the game went on the Bobcats doubled him more in the low post and Griffin didn't post up much in the closing minutes.
It was a big win for Charlotte, which improved to 2-0 without point guard Kemba Walker, who is expected to be back in about 10 days after spraining his ankle.

Green, Suns race past Pacers 124-100
AP - Sports
PHOENIX (AP) -- The team with the NBA's best record had its worst game of the season Wednesday night.
The Phoenix Suns simply ran the Indiana Pacers and their vaunted defense off the court, 124-100.
It was the most points allowed by the Pacers this season and matched their most one-sided loss.
The Suns snapped Indiana's five-game winning streak but was no cause for alarm, the Pacers' George Hill said.
''We spoil you guys with great defense,'' he said, ''so when you do have a bad game you think the world is going to end.''
The surprising Suns won their 24th game, one fewer than they did all of last season.
''Heck of an offensive performance by the Phoenix Suns,'' Indiana coach Frank Vogel said. ''Their shot-making was off the charts.''
Gerald Green led the Suns with 23 points against his former team, not that it meant anything that special. Green's had a lot of former teams.
''This is my seventh team, man,'' he said. ''I've been down this road before.''
Indiana has the league's best record (33-8) and is the NBA leader in scoring defense and field goal percentage defense. But the Pacers were on their heels from the start.
''We knew they were going to come out with a lot of energy and play with a lot of energy,'' Indiana's Paul George said. ''We just did a terrible job of responding to it. They just caught fire and once one of them fell, they all had that confidence to keep shooting.''
Goran Dragic scored 21, Markieff Morris 20, P.J. Tucker 13, Miles Plumlee 11 and Channing Frye 10 for the Suns.
George scored 26, Hill 16 and David West 13 for Indiana.
Phoenix scored 62 points in each half, the most allowed by the Pacers in any half this season.
''We should play like that every game,'' Dragic said. ''We should play like that against everybody, even if they are last in the standings.''
Green and Plumlee came to the Suns along with a first-round draft pick in a trade that sent Luis Scola to Indiana in the offseason. Scola scored five on Wednesday night.
NOTES: The Pacers' David West was out briefly in the first half with a bruised right wrist. ... The previous high for points scored against Indiana in a half was 61 in the second half at Portland on Dec. 2. ... The most points Indiana had previously allowed was 118 by Oklahoma City on Dec. 8.

Toni's view:
what an upset by the exciting Phoenix Suns against East co-favorite (with the Heat) Pacers. Coach Hornacek is a candidate for coach of the year for sure.

Howard and Harden lead Rockets over Kings 119-98
AP - Sports
HOUSTON (AP) -- Dwight Howard didn't think he was aggressive enough in Houston's two losses to Sacramento this season and vowed to attack from the beginning when the Rockets faced the Kings on Wednesday night.
Howard's plan worked. He had 17 points and 10 rebounds by halftime on the way to a 26-point night to help the Rockets cruise to their third straight win, a 119-98 victory over the Kings.
Howard also had 13 rebounds and four blocks and James Harden added 24 points and nine assists before the pair went to the bench for the fourth quarter.
''The last couple of games against those guys, I didn't come out aggressive like I needed to on both ends of the floor,'' Howard said. ''I've been looking at some film and I wanted to get off to a better start. It's not just about scoring. It's defense and things like that.''
Gay, who tied a career high with 41 points on Tuesday night, injured his left Achilles tendon in the first quarter and Cousins sprained his left ankle in the second.
Derrick Williams scored 22 points with 11 rebounds and Isaiah Thomas added 20 points for the Kings.
Cousins entered the game leading the team in scoring (23.1) and rebounding (11.7). He scored just two points before getting hurt, snapping a streak of 30 straight games with at least 10 points.
Omri Casspi added 20 points and tied a career-high with 12 rebounds and Parsons added 19 points with 10 rebounds.

4 first-timers voted to start NBA All-Star game
AP - Sports
NEW YORK (AP) -- Kobe Bryant called for younger players in the All-Star game, and the fans listened.
They still want Bryant, too.
Stephen Curry, Kevin Love, Paul George and Kyrie Irving were voted NBA All-Stars Thursday, putting four first-time starters in the Feb. 16 game in New Orleans.
Bryant was elected by fans to his 16th All-Star game, second-most in NBA history, but this one is shaping up as a kids' game.
Curry, perhaps the biggest snub last season, will join him in the Western Conference backcourt. Love passed Dwight Howard in the final days of voting and will start in the frontcourt along with Oklahoma City's Kevin Durant and the Clippers' Blake Griffin.
''Hey, I'm popular now,'' Love joked. ''It's very humbling to me to be starting in the All-Star game. I tip my hat to the fans in the Twin Cities and all over Minnesota and beyond.''
The four first-time starters are all 25 or younger. Curry went to All-Star weekend as a kid when his father, Dell, competed in the 3-point contest, and now he'll finally get to play in the game.
''It's kind of just a surreal feeling,'' Curry said. ''I saw Kobe come on the screen and you knew that next person on the screen was going to be me or I was going to get left off that list. Just when I saw my name it was a real emotional kind of experience and glad my wife and daughter were here to watch it with me.''
LeBron James was the leading vote-getter with 1.4 million and Miami teammate Dwyane Wade also was voted in Thursday. George, who has led Indiana to the league's best record, and New York's Carmelo Anthony are the other East forwards, and Irving will start at guard.
Bryant has been limited to just six games this season because of injuries and will be out until at least early next month. He said recently he hoped fans wouldn't vote for him and would instead look toward younger, more deserving players.
Fans picked him anyway. Only Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, with 19, was selected to more All-Star games.
But even Bryant could finish only second to Curry among West guards, a remarkable turnaround for the Golden State sharpshooter. He was the highest-scoring player not chosen last year, but moved past the Clippers' Chris Paul in the third returns of balloting, then passed Bryant in the final days to finish with more than a million votes and become the Warriors' first All-Star starter since Latrell Sprewell in 1995.
''I understand how big a deal it is to be selected on the team,'' Curry said. ''And just how different the feeling was from last year, having gone through that experience and just trying to get back healthy, first and foremost, to give myself a chance come All-Star selection time.''
Love also made a late move to surge into the top three, finishing about 8,000 votes ahead of Houston center Dwight Howard to become Minnesota's first All-Star starter since Kevin Garnett in 2007.
''I was hoping for the best and preparing for the worst, and knowing the worst was I was going to still probably end up in the All-Star game (as a coach's pick) and represent the West and the Wolves and the Twin Cities.'' Love said. ''Right now, I'm very happy.''
Indiana hadn't had one since Jermaine O'Neal a year earlier, but now George will get to play for Pacers coach Frank Vogel, who has already clinched the East's coaching spot.
''It means a lot because that means the fans are really watching us as a team,'' George said. ''For us to have the No. 1 record in the league, and playing at a high level, I think the fans are starting to follow us as a whole and I think that's the biggest thing with me being a starter.''
The reserves will be announced next Thursday. Head coaches in each conference will vote for two guards, three frontcourt players and two players regardless of position.

Knicks' Bargnani out with torn left elbow ligament
AP - Sports
NEW YORK (AP) -- The New York Knicks say forward Andrea Bargnani has a torn ligament in his left elbow and is out indefinitely.
Bargnani was hurt Wednesday during a 110-106 loss to Philadelphia when he landed hard while attempting to dunk. He had an MRI on Thursday that revealed the injury.
It's the latest injury for the Knicks (15-27), who have lost five in a row and have battled injuries all season. They are already missing forwards Amare Stoudemire and Kenyon Martin from their frontcourt because of sprained left ankles.
Bargnani is averaging 13.3 points, second on the team, in his first season in New York. The Knicks acquired the No. 1 pick in the 2006 draft from Toronto during the summer.
