Rookie Shane Larkin helps Mavs hold on for win over Suns
Associated Press
PHOENIX -- The son of a baseball Hall of Famer had the biggest game of his young pro basketball career, and the Dallas Mavericks probably wouldn't have won without him.
Rookie Shane Larkin, son of Cincinnati Reds great Barry Larkin, scored a career-high 18 points, half of them in the final quarter, and the Mavericks held on to beat the Phoenix Suns 110-107 on Friday night.
Larkin, the 18th overall draft pick out of Miami, scored six in the last 2:42, capped by a pair of free throws with 11.1 seconds left.
"Sometimes you think as a rookie that you don't want to mess up," he said. "You want to play smart, you don't want to do anything that the coach is uncomfortable (with). Tonight it was, 'Just go play. We need you to play and we need you to play well and do the things that you can do.'"
Larkin was forced into extra duty when starting guard Jose Calderon hurt his knee in the first half.
"It's the most minutes I've played since college," he said.
Larkin made 6 of 8 shots, including two of three 3-pointers and had five assists in 26 1/2 minutes.
"That's why we drafted him," Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle said. "We felt like he could have this kind of impact."
Monta Ellis scored 24 and Dirk Nowitzki 21 for the Mavericks, who never trailed. Shawn Marion scored eight of his 16 in the third quarter for Dallas.
Goran Dragic scored 28 points, and Markieff Morris added 23, including 14 in the final quarter, and grabbed 12 rebounds.
Morris' twin brother Marcus scored 13 for the Suns, who have lost four of five.
Game notes
The Suns were without Leandro Barbosa for the second game in a row because of a sore right shoulder. He is at the end of a 10-day contract and is expected to get another over the weekend. ... Dallas' 36 points were the most Phoenix has allowed in the first quarter this season. ... Dallas has won 12 of 15 over the Suns.

Kevin Durant scores career-best 54 as Thunder top Warriors
Associated Press
OKLAHOMA CITY -- Kevin Durant scored a career-high 54 points to help the Oklahoma City Thunder beat the Golden State Warriors 127-121 on Friday night.
Durant made 19 of 28 field goals and 11 of 13 free throws in his third straight game with at least 36 points.
Serge Ibaka had 21 points and eight rebounds, Reggie Jackson scored 14 points and Kendrick Perkins added 12 rebounds for the Thunder (30-10), who won for the third time in four games. Oklahoma City shot 58 percent from the field and scored a season-high point total.
Stephen Curry had 37 points and 11 assists and Klay Thompson added 26 points for the Warriors (25-16), who shot 52 percent but simply couldn't match up with Durant.
Durant drained back-to-back 3-pointers with Draymond Green in his face to give the Thunder a 116-103 lead. He hit another 3 with 5:25 left to reach 50, and then, with the crowd on its feet, made a turnaround jumper to match his career high.
Game notes
The previous two meetings between the Thunder and Warriors were decided by last-second shots. In the first game on Nov. 14, Iguodala hit a fallaway game-winning jumper for Golden State. In the second game, on Nov. 29, Russell Westbrook hit the game-winner in overtime. ... Golden State G Jordan Crawford and G MarShon Brooks played for the first time since being acquired from Boston in a three-team trade.
TS (toni storks) view:
For me, Kevin Durant is the most complete offensive player in the NBA right now, one of the best offensive player all time. He is a one of a kind scorer.

Timberwolves blast Jazz 98-72 to snap skid
Associated Press
MINNEAPOLIS -- The struggling Minnesota Timberwolves finally got to blow off some steam.
Nikola Pekovic had 27 points and 14 rebounds in three quarters and the Timberwolves blasted the Utah Jazz, 98-72 on Saturday night.
Kevin Love had 18 points, 13 rebounds and five assists, and Kevin Martin scored 20 points to help the Wolves snap a three-game losing streak that included losses to Sacramento and Toronto. The Wolves scored 28 points off 16 Utah turnovers and outscored the Jazz 50-18 in the paint for a much-needed blowout.
Alec Burks scored 18 points for the Jazz, who trailed by as many as 36 points and shot 28.8 percent, the worst shooting night in franchise history. Derrick Favors had eight points and 10 boards, but was just 3 for 10 from the field.
The Timberwolves hit a season-low three games under .500 with a dispiriting loss in Toronto on Friday night, and a season that started with playoff aspirations was threatening to be done in by a lack of team chemistry and an inability to win close games. They are 0-11 this season in games decided by four points or less, but also lead the league in games in which they've led by at least 30 points (10).
The Jazz were playing again without leading scorer Gordon Hayward, who was out with a strained left hip flexor. And they've never missed him more.
The Timberwolves weren't exactly on fire, either. They shot 44 percent in the first half and missed eight of 19 free throws. But if any team needed a gimme like this one, it was the Wolves. They had lost four of their previous five games to fall to 11th in the Western Conference and were fighting discord in the locker room and plummeting confidence on the court. That all changed on Saturday night, with Love and Pekovic rough-housing on the sideline, Martin playing with an aggression that hasn't been seen for a few weeks and Ricky Rubio playing with a hop in his step and a smile on his face for the first time in a month.
Rubio had six points, nine assists and eight rebounds in 26 minutes.
Promising rookie Trey Burke had just nine points on 2-for-10 shooting for Utah.
Game notes
The Jazz's previous franchise low for field goal percentage was 29.3 percent against New York on Nov. 14, 2005. ... Love hit a 3-pointer in the first quarter that moved him past Wally Szczerbiak for second on the franchise's career list.

Joakim Noah, Carlos Boozer power Bulls to rout of Sixers
Associated Press
CHICAGO -- Joakim Noah had 21 points and 16 rebounds, Carlos Boozer added 15 points and 13 boards, and the Chicago Bulls beat the Philadelphia 76ers 103-78 on Saturday night.
Noah extended his streak of double-digit rebound games to 12, the longest stretch of his career.
The duo's dominating performance was awfully similar to the teams' last meeting at the United Center, when Noah posted a triple-double and combined with Boozer for 44 points and 33 rebounds on Feb. 28, 2013.
Chicago (19-20) has won seven of nine games in 2014. The Bulls led by as many as 36, their largest lead this season.
D.J. Augustin scored nine points and dished out seven assists in the pivotal second quarter, in which Chicago extended its lead from five to 20. He finished with 19 points and eight assists.
Only three 76ers scored in double digits, Thaddeus Young leading the way with 12 points.
James Anderson had 11 points and seven rebounds for Philadelphia (13-27), which has dropped six of seven.
Augustin brought the fans to their feet two minutes into the second when he threaded a cross-court bounce pass to Jimmy Butler, who finished strong with a thunderous slam. Augustin later fed Noah on a two-handed dunk in transition to cap the dominating quarter.
Spencer Hawes, who averaged 19 points and 13 rebounds in his last two games against Chicago, was largely ineffective. The 7-foot-1 center had nine points and six rebounds.
Michael Carter-Williams scored 10 points and dished out five assists. He had 26 and 11 in the November meeting.
Game notes
The Bulls agreed to trade point guard Marquis Teague to the Brooklyn Nets for F Tornike Shengelia, a person with knowledge of the deal said Saturday. Teague was dressed but did not play. "Marquis is a good, young player. He's had some good moments," Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau said. "He's had some moments that he can obviously do better, but that's to be expected. When you come into this league as young as he is, that's what you're going to get. He's much further along today than he was when he was first drafted." .

Streaking Pacers stay hot with win over Clippers
Associated Press
INDIANAPOLIS -- Paul George put an emphatic 360-degree twist on the Pacers' latest blowout.
Lob City's stars just watched in amazement.
George scored 36 points, the last two on a reverse windmill dunk that brought fans to their feet and the Clippers to their knees in Indiana's 106-92 rout Saturday night.
"It was just instinctive," George said after helping to end the Clippers' five-game winning streak. "I wanted to put on a show for the fans."
The entire season has been a showcase for the Pacers (32-7), who have the NBA's best record, the league's best home record at 21-1 and a 3 1/2-game lead in the Eastern Conference over two-time defending champion Miami.
George's highlight-reel dunks and Lance Stephenson's increasingly commonplace poses are all becoming part of Indiana's normal routine.
George, last year's Most Improved Player, has six 30-point games and 27 20-point games this season. The 23-year-old emerging star is ranked among the league leaders in scoring, free throw percentage and steals, and he might be higher in rebounds and assists if the Pacers weren't blowing teams out with regularity.
Critics might contend the only real thing missing from his resume is pizazz. Those complaints disappeared with one dunk contest move that George saved for game time. Armed with a 20-point lead and a clear path to the basket, he leapt in the air, spun around, slammed the ball with one hand, stuck the landing and ran back to play defense. Fans and most of his teammates immediately jumped to their feet.
"I just wanted to celebrate," Stephenson said. "I didn't want to get back on defense. I've not seen one like that in a game I've been in."
Indiana fans haven't seen anything quite like this season, either, not even when Reggie Miller was running the show.
The Pacers have now won four straight, all by at least 14 points, and fell just short of winning four in a row by 20 or more points for the first time in franchise history.
Stephenson, who leads the NBA with three triple-doubles, settled for 22 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists.
Indiana's bench pitched in, too. Danny Granger added 12 points and now has nine double-figure games in 14 appearances this season, while C.J. Watson had 11 points.
The Clippers' bigger problem was Indiana's stout defense.
Indiana had a 48-39 rebounding edge, a 42-32 edge on points in the paints and limited the high-scoring Clippers to 39.8 percent from the field and six fast-break points.
Jamal Crawford finished with 22 points off the bench, while Blake Griffin had 19 points and rebounds and DeAndre Jordan finished with 12 points and 17 rebounds to lead Los Angeles (28-14).
Game notes
Indiana completed its first season sweep of the Clippers since 2005-06. ... The Clippers' five-game winning streak matched a season best. ... Hibbert finished with five blocks, all in the first quarter. ... Indiana has won 20 games this season by 10 or more points.

Jones leads Rockets over Bucks, 114-104
Associated Press
HOUSTON -- Since signing with Houston this summer, Dwight Howard has been telling everyone that Terrence Jones had a chance to be a very good player.
Lately, Jones has been making his new teammate look pretty smart.
Jones had a career-high 36 points and 11 rebounds, and the Rockets led from the start in a 114-104 win over the Milwaukee Bucks on Saturday night.
"He's been doing an excellent job," Howard said. "He's still growing as a player and he's learning the game at a very fast pace, which is great."
Jones had 25 points by halftime, matching his previous career-best set on Wednesday, and James Harden added 22 points. The second-year player has averaged 22.25 points in Houston's four games this week.
"I was just trying to offensive rebound and do all the little things I've been doing," said Jones, who had six offensive boards. "It was just coming to me tonight."
Brandon Knight scored 26 points with seven assists for the NBA-worst Bucks, who have dropped eight in a row.
"From a physical standpoint he outmuscled us," Milwaukee coach Larry Drew said of Jones. "We knew we had to slow down Dwight and slow down James Harden and defend those guys at the 3-point line, but you don't factor in a guy like that having that type of game."
Howard added 20 points and 14 rebounds for the Rockets, Aaron Brooks had 10 points and four assists and Jones also had two blocks, a steal and an assist.
John Henson had 20 points and 15 rebounds for Milwaukee and Luke Ridnour added 14 points.
The Rockets were up by seven soon after that when they scored nine straight points to push the lead to 89-73. Harden got that spurt going with a layup before Howard made two free throws before sinking a rare 3. The 6-foot-11 Howard, who often jokes that he should be allowed to shoot more 3s, smiled broadly and pointed at his teammates as he trotted down the court after hitting the long shot.
It was his second 3 this season and the fourth of his nine-year career.
The Rockets bounced back from a tough loss to Oklahoma City on Thursday night in which they set an NBA record for the largest scoring differential between two halves by scoring 73 points in the first half and a franchise-low 19 after halftime.
They'd matched the 19 points they scored then with 5 minutes remaining in the first quarter en route to a 62-52 halftime lead.
Jones played just 19 games as a rookie last season after being selected out of Kentucky with the 18th overall pick in the 2012 draft. He has appeared in 39 games this season with 34 starts. The 22-year-old Jones is the second-youngest Rocket to have a 30-point game behind Hakeem Olajuwon.

Warriors send Pelicans to 8th straight loss
Associated Press
NEW ORLEANS -- Stephen Curry scored 28 points, David Lee added 22 and the Golden State Warriors sent the New Orleans Pelicans to their eighth straight loss, 97-87 on Saturday night.
Anthony Davis had 31 points and 17 rebounds in his seventh straight game with more than 20 points, but that was only enough to keep the Pelicans competitive into the final minutes.
Andrew Bogut had 10 points, 15 rebounds and five blocked shots for Golden State, which bounced back from a loss a night earlier in Oklahoma City and snapped a two-game skid. Jordan Crawford added 10 points.
Tyreke Evans scored 14 points in his return to the Pelicans after missing three games with a left ankle sprain. Al-Farouq Aminu added 12 points, but the Pelicans were doomed by 13-of-39 shooting in the second half, during which they scored only 33 points.
New Orleans finished shooting 38.6 percent (32 of 83), including 2 of 11 from 3-point range. The Warriors shot 44 percent (37 of 84), hitting 6 of 22 from deep.
Game notes
The Warriors have now played 25 road games, most of any team in the league. Their road record is 14-11. ... Golden State now returns home for five games, starting Monday against Indiana.

LaMarcus Aldridge guides Blazers to 5th straight win
Associated Press
DALLAS -- LaMarcus Aldridge had 30 points and 12 rebounds, and the Portland Trail Blazers ran past the Dallas Mavericks 127-111 on Saturday night for their fifth consecutive victory.
Aldridge, a 28-year-old Dallas native, had his 24th double-double this season.
The NBA's highest-scoring team reached 30 points in the first quarter for the 14th time in 2013-14, and 100 points in three quarters for the fourth time.
Nicolas Batum scored 21 for the Trail Blazers. Robin Lopez added 16 points and 12 rebounds.
Dirk Nowitzki had 18 points for the Mavericks, who had won four of their previous five games.
Devin Harris played 17 minutes and scored six points in his first game this season following toe surgery.
Harris played the first 3 1/2 of his 10 NBA seasons with the Mavericks, and re-signed with the team last summer, but missed the first 41 games following surgery.
Batum shot 6 for 7 and had three rebounds to help Portland to a 35-23 lead at the end of the first quarter. Aldridge added 10 points. The Trail Blazers shot 59 percent (13 for 22) and led by as many as 15 points.
Game notes
Dallas' Shawn Marion made his 1,000th NBA start. . The Trail Blazers are just 8-6 when they have scored 30-plus points in the first quarter, but they're 4-0 when reaching 100 in just three quarters. They entered the game averaging 109.1 points per game. . . When asked what knowledge Trail Blazers coach Terry Stotts had gained after Portland won only 33 games last season, Dallas coach Rick Carlisle joked about his former assistant, "You mean other than what he stole here?"

Taj Gibson's layup at overtime buzzer lifts Bulls over Lakers
Associated Press
CHICAGO -- With nine-tenths of a second left, Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau drew up a play for Taj Gibson. He told the athletic forward to attack the basket and use his left hand.
Done, and done.
Gibson got a nice bounce pass from Mike Dunleavy and made a lefty layup at the buzzer in overtime, lifting Chicago to a 102-100 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers on Monday night.
"You don't have a lot of time in that situation. It is a quick read," Thibodeau said. "Dunleavy made a great play on it and Taj obviously. But we needed everyone to sell the play. We had good fortune on it."
Dunleavy had to inbound from underneath the basket and found Gibson cutting down the middle. He then muscled toward the hoop for the winning basket, which was confirmed by a video review by the officials.
"It was a good play," Lakers coach Mike D'Antoni said. "It was designed well and they executed well. We played baseline and didn't slide over."
Gibson said it was his first winning buzzer-beater at any level.
"They always crack jokes on me in practice about trying to use my left and today I proved them wrong," a grinning Gibson said.
Joakim Noah had 17 points, 21 rebounds and six assists for Chicago (20-20), which has won eight of 10 to get back to .500 for the first time since Nov. 27. D.J. Augustin had a season-high 27 points, and Jimmy Butler finished with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
Nick Young had 31 points for the Lakers (16-26), including a tying baseline jumper with 6 seconds left in overtime. The streaky sub also made three free throws with 4.1 seconds left in regulation, tying it at 93.
Augustin had to shoulder the load at the point after Kirk Hinrich departed in the third with a right hamstring injury.
"We like to close games with D.J. and Kirk," Thibodeau said. "That allows you to bring D.J. off some catch-and-shoot things and into the pick and roll. We didn't have that option so we had to go to some other things."
Pau Gasol had 20 points and 19 rebounds for Los Angeles, and Jodie Meeks added 16 points and seven assists.
TS (toni storks) view:
Chicago is a scrappy team, getting the win even with a depleted line-up or even without a reliable bench. Coach Thibodeau is a genius of a coach.

Hawks hold off Heat despite LeBron James' 30 points
Associated Press
ATLANTA -- The Atlanta Hawks didn't talk about ending their nine-game losing streak against Miami.
The Hawks only wanted to make up for the last loss in the streak -- an overtime defeat in Miami last month.
Paul Millsap scored 26 points and the Hawks overcame LeBron James' 30 to beat the Heat 121-114 on Monday night, leaving Miami to bemoan its defensive woes.
"To us, this was a get-back game," said Atlanta's Lou Williams, who had 12 points. "We felt we should have won the last one in Miami that we lost in overtime."
James blamed poor defense for Miami's fourth loss in its last six games.
"We scored enough points to win, so obviously it was defense," James said. "Especially in the first half."
The Hawks led 71-70 at halftime.
DeMarre Carroll finished with 19 points and Pero Antic had 17 for the Hawks, who beat Miami for the first time since Jan 2, 2012. It was Atlanta's first home win over the Heat since Nov. 18, 2009.
The Hawks have been rebuilt under second-year general manager Danny Ferry and first-year coach Mike Budenholzer. Most Atlanta players said they had no idea the Hawks had gone so long without beating the Heat.
Chris Bosh had 21 points for Miami, which was without Dwyane Wade for the second straight game.
The Hawks set a season high for points in a half and points allowed by a Miami opponent in a half.
The Heat trailed despite matching their season high for points in a half. It was only the second time in Miami's franchise history both teams had at least 70 points in a half.
Korver hit a 3-pointer to open the second period, extending to 109 his NBA record of consecutive games with a 3.
James was slow to return to his feet after he was hit in the back of his head by Korver, who was trying to block a shot with 3:18 remaining in the first half. Korver was called for a flagrant foul, but the call was overturned following a review.
Game notes
The Heat and the Celtics each had 70 or more points in the second half on April 12, 1990, at Boston, the only other time Miami and its opponent each scored at least 70 points in a half.

Chandler Parsons, Rockets snap Blazers' 5-game winning streak
Associated Press
HOUSTON -- The last time the Houston Rockets scored more than 70 points in a first half they followed it with a franchise-low 19 points after halftime.
They had no such letdown Monday night against the Portland Trail Blazers.
Chandler Parsons scored a season-high 31 points and Dwight Howard added 24 to lead the Rockets to a 126-113 win over Portland that snapped the Trail Blazers' five-game winning streak.
The Rockets scored a season-high to win their second straight, building a big lead early and answering every time Portland made a run.
James Harden added 22 points and had five assists and Patrick Beverley returned from a broken hand to score 17 points. Parsons added 10 rebounds and seven assists while finishing one point shy of his career-high.
Harden talked about the difference between Monday night and last week's loss to Oklahoma City, when they set an NBA record for the largest scoring differential between two halves.
"We just held our composure," Harden said. "We couldn't worry about what they were doing or anything. We had to figure out a way to fight through it and play harder, push the tempo a little harder and play defense."
LaMarcus Aldridge had 27 points and 20 rebounds for the Trail Blazers, who have won seven of their last 11 games.
Damian Lillard added 24 points for Portland and Wesley Matthews had 18.
Game notes
Houston's Terrence Jones, who scored a career-high 36 points in the last game, sat out with a deep thigh bruise. Donatas Motiejunas started in his place and finished with nine points and nine rebounds. ... The Trail Blazers have scored at least 98 points in 29 games in a row.

Clippers breeze by Pistons behind high-flying DeAndre Jordan
Associated Press
AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- There's something about the Detroit Pistons that seems to bring out DeAndre Jordan's best dunks.
Jordan had 16 points and 21 rebounds -- dunking seven times with a layup -- and the Los Angeles Clippers breezed to a 112-103 victory over the Pistons on Monday.
Jordan threw down a memorable dunk on Detroit's Brandon Knight last March. Knight is no longer on the Pistons, but Jordan put on another highlight show in this meeting against Detroit big men Andre Drummond and Greg Monroe.
"We knew we had to bring it," Jordan said.
Detroit's Josh Smith had his own explanation.
"We didn't put up a resistance," Smith said. "They had transition 3s, open looks at 3s and they were getting layups in transition and throwing lobs and we just let them have everything. I don't know what happened."
Jordan made his first seven shots. Blake Griffin added 25 points and Jamal Crawford scored 26 for the Clippers, who are now 6-2 since losing star point guard Chris Paul to a shoulder injury.
J.J. Redick added 20 points for Los Angeles, including two four-point plays when the Pistons fouled him beyond the arc.
Rodney Stuckey scored 29 points for Detroit and Smith added 24, but the Pistons got almost nothing from their starting backcourt. Brandon Jennings went scoreless and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope scored only six points.
Jordan dunked four times in the first quarter alone. The Clippers led 64-53 at halftime after shooting 66 percent from the field.
Redick bounced back after a 4-for-17 showing against Indiana on Saturday. His first four-point play put the Clippers up 38-33 in the second quarter. His second came in the third, after the Pistons had cut the lead to six and looked ready for a potential run.
"That's my job -- to knock down some shots," Redick said. "I think we played really well in that second quarter, and then in that third quarter we had another good stretch."
The last player with two four-point plays in one game was Crawford, who did it for Golden State against Denver on March 28, 2009, according to STATS.
"I figured he'd probably done it before," Redick said. "He's the master."
Game notes
Caldwell-Pope fouled Redick on both four-point plays. ... Jordan finished 8 of 11 from the field and 0 for 6 on free throws. ... Jennings missed all seven of his shots from the field, going scoreless for only the second time in 330 career games. It also happened in March, when he was with Milwaukee. ... The Pistons dropped to 7-14 at home this season. They are 10-10 on the road.
