Guarana comes in several forms. It can be found in some energy drinks and may also be the main ingredient in supplements used to promote weight loss, provide more energy, improve sixual function, and more. Though natural, guarana can cause side effects and therefore is not considered to be 100% safe for everyone to use.
Studies to determine how guarana may be used to treat impotence have shown varying results. In 2008, rats that suffered from impotence were given guarana and showed some improvement. A previous study in 2007, however, showed that in larger amounts, guarana could actually cause the problem instead of help it. Since impotence can be caused by a vast number of conditions, the jury remains out on whether or not this caffeine-like supplement provides benefits to those who suffer from erectile dysfunction.
What has been proven is that guarana can cause side effects and even allergic reactions. Stomach problems, headaches, chest pain and more can occur. It may also react with certain prescription medications. Withdrawal side effects have also been noticed. These are similar to what one would experience when breaking away from caffeine.
With the evidence proving conflicting at this time, the best course of action would be to discuss guarana with your doctor prior to taking it. Impotence should not be self-treated using supplements and these should never take the place of prescription medications issued for erectile dysfunction. For the time being, conventional treatments are the better option.
