Teenagers have acne to contend with while middle-aged individuals have age spots. Also called liver spots, these flat brown spots are harmless. They are simply caused by sunlight accelerating the production of melanin, or skin pigment.
Preventing age spots is as easy as using sunscreen religiously and avoiding tanning beds. Liver spots plague many people over age 50, they are inevitable for anyone who has spent a large amount of time in the sun when they were younger. In some cases, age spots appear on people as young as 40.
For people who already have age spots, over-the-counter creams are sold that either bleach the spots or exfoliate the skin. Both reduce the appearance of age spots temporarily. Dermatologists can use chemical peels, cryotherapy or dermabrasion to remove age spots.
Home remedies include bleaching the spots with lemon juice or hydrogen peroxide. Just be careful to avoid the eye area. Apple cider vinegar or onion juice may have the same bleaching effect.
Where age spots are present, you may notice other sun damage; the skin will look more wrinkled, drier, and have a less youthful appearance. Most home remedies will make the skin even drier.
