For many, age spots do not begin to appear until midlife. This skin discoloration is the direct result of years and years of being exposed to the sun. The popularity of tanning beds has caused some to develop age spots as early as their 20′s. Prevention of the formation of age spots is as simple as caring for your skin.
It pays to start thinking about age spot prevention at an early age. Sunscreen is the number one tool at your disposal if you do not wish for these spot to show up on your skin. A sunscreen product of at least SPF 15 should be used, and should be applied to the skin at least twenty minutes prior to venturing out into the sun. If you will be outdoors for a period of time, reapply sunscreen often.
Though the warm winter months are not a time for heavy clothing, lightweight clothing and hats should be worn to reduce exposure to UV rays. UV rays are most powerful between the hours of 10am and 4pm. Note that UV rays can pass through the windows in your car. Unless your windows are tinted, you’ll need to protect your skin.
Already have age spots? If so, there are a number of products and treatments that can be used to remove them or reduce their appearance. Chemical peels can be costly, but are quite effective. Do check with your doctor should any age spot appear to be abnormal. Skin cancer is quite common and can be fatal.
