MANILA – A 21-year-old Filipino made it to the blind auditions of the BBC talent show, The Voice UK.
Joseph Apostol from Kent sang “Will You Still Love Me, Tomorrow”. His rendition of the song caught the attention of the show's two judges: singers Jessie J and Tom Jones.
“I think you will be a huge asset to my team. I think I want to make sure I am representing people that really know how to tell a story when they're singing and that's exactly what you did. Congratulations!” said Jessie J.
Tom Jones also thought that Apostol did a great job with the song. He said he only had one spot left open on his team.
“I've been waiting, and waiting, and waiting. But when I heard you, I heard the passion from you and the range that you have, and there's a lot of fire there and you didn't copy anybody, you have an original sounding voice. i know there's a lot of great Filipino singer because I've been to the Philippines and I've heard them sing. You really do have a great voice and I'd love to have you on my team,” he said.
The decision was not an easy one to make for Apostol. But In the end, he chose to be on the team of Tom Jones.
“I respect the two of you because obviously you're amazing with what you do. But I'm gonna choose Tom,” Apostol said.
For his part, Tom Jones was glad he waited.
“Because when I heard this man and that song, he put something in there that was not there before and I love that! I've been holding out and I finally found what I've been looking for,” he exclaimed.
Chicken Adobo, Pancit
After Apostol’s performance, it was Will.i.am who got excited upon learning that the contestant is a Filipino.
“Woo! Oh! Like my best friend, apl? Salamat," Will.i.am said, referring to fellow Black Eyed Peas member and The Voice Philippines judge Apl.d.ap.
Apostol could only reply, “Oh my gosh, yeah! Thank you, thank you!”
Will.i.am added, “Do you like chicken adobo? Pancit?”
“Definitely! I love that. That's my favorite food,” Apostol said.
Will.i.am explained to the baffled audience and fellow judges that he “just hit him with Filipino secrets!”
The singer also explained to Apostol why he didn’t pick to turn around.
“You are really fantabulous. But when Jessie turned around I was like ‘Wow, you're in good hands’,” he said.
Apostol said he moved to the UK when he was about 10-years-old when his mother was hired as a nurse.
“Being in a different country was a difficult time for me. I was used to being with my family, friends back in the Philippines. Looking back helped me with my confidence,” he said.
His mother and friends were backstage supporting him.
“I just want to make them proud. I'm just gonna bring my best. Hopefully, that’s enough,” he said.
