Ateneo picks up third volleyball win with FEU sweepDefending champions Ateneo de Manila University fashioned out a straight set sweep of Far Eastern University, 25-15, 25-16, 25-17, in the UAAP Season 77 Women's Volleyball Tournament at the Araneta Coliseum on Saturday.
Ateneo is off to a hot start by winning their first three games, while FEU absorbed its first loss after beating the University of the Philippines in their opening game.
The Lady Eagles showed their brilliant attacking form, easily pulling away in the middle of the first set with back row hits from reigning UAAP Most Valuable Player Alyssa Valdez and power spikes from Ella De Jesus.
The Lady Tamaraws, meanwhile, struggled with their offense, scoring only 10 from attacks compared to Ateneo's 18 points.
Ateneo continued their vicious attacks in the second frame, with the two veterans taking charge of the offense. The disorganized FEU squad converted poorly with eight points off hits, while the defending champs scattered 14 of their own.
The Eagles went for the kill in the third against the lethargic Tamaraws, with rookie Bea de Leon stepping up in scoring duties.
Valdez finished with 16 points to lead the defending champs, but de Leon took the Best Player honors with a brilliant showing of 10 points. De Jesus added nine.
No one on the FEU side scored in the double digits, with top gunner Bernadeth Pons limited to seven points. Remy Palma had seven of her own, while Cha Simborio had six. — JDS, GMA News
