In case you were too busy beating deadlines and attending Christmas parties these past few days to properly prepare for the holidays, know this: We're only a few hours away from 12 midnight of December 25, the time of the all-important Noche Buena feast.

If you’ve completely forgotten to prepare, don’t panic; you can still have an easy, fuss-free spread with pasta, fruit salad, a few slices of queso de bola, and of course, the Christmas ham.

But which of the many hams in the supermarket should you buy? Well, if you're not that much of a foodie, pick anything. But if you're a serious eater who wants only the best kinds of meat to pass through his/her mouth, then below are our picks of the best hams in the country.

Put it between two loaves of bread, fry it a bit and consume with rice, or just cut some up and pair it with beer; whatever you choose to do, we promise you'll be visiting ham heaven!

#1 EXCELENTE HAM

BUY IT: If you don’t mind falling in line for hours for good ham

Hundreds of people line up at Excelente’s roadside store in Quiapo during the holiday season for a very good reason: Their smoked Chinese hams, known for being some of the most flavorful around, is the stuff of Noche Buena legend. Try to place your order as early as possible to avoid the maddening Christmas crowds.
Prices range from P840 to P1,150 per kilogram. Available at 155-157 Carlos Palanca St., Quiapo, Manila. Visit www.excelenteham.com/home or call 733-6360 or 733-6355 for orders or inquiries.

#3 SANTI’S CHRISTMAS HONEY HAM

BUY IT: For a present that’s pricier than it looks

A posh deli like Santi’s probably wouldn’t be the first place you’d go to for value-for-money fare, but surprise, surprise—their honey-glazed ham is delicious, moist, and best of all, affordable. Here’s a great holiday idea: Give one to someone you need to impress, like your ninong sa kasal or your girlfriend’s parents, and watch your pogi points soar.

Purefoods’ Fiesta Ham’s tagline, “the star of the Noche Buena,” exists for a reason: Its meat is reasonably priced, tasty, and best of all, widely available. #7 CONSORCIO DE JABUGO JAMON IBERICO

BUY IT: If you’re a loaded gourmand with a taste for the finer things in life

If you really want to pull out all the stops for your Noche Buena, then order some Jamon Iberico for your table. Made from the finest black Iberian pigs from the southwest regions of Spain, this ham is known worldwide for its savory taste and smooth, melt-in-your-mouth texture. Yes, it’s a lot pricier than your run-of-the-mill hams, but if you can afford to spend the cash equivalent of a cheap phone for a chunk of the finest meat in the world, then by all means, go ahead and indulge!

P4,585 per kilo (approx. 7-8 kg./leg), Rustan’s; order at www.rustansfresh.com/marketplace-order

# 8 KING SUE CHINESE HAM

BUY IT: For a potluck Noche Buena with the whole clan

King Sue’s huge bone-in ham is a staple at a lot of holiday parties for its distinctly salty flavor—a trademark of Chinese hams—and affordable price points. Make sure to prepare it when you’re not in a ravenous mood: This ham comes with lengthy preparation instructions that can take up a good chunk of your time. But hey, a little sacrifice is nothing for good ham, right?

Chinese style hams are priced at P555 per kilogram for the raw hams and P630 per kilogram for the boiled ham. Available at all leading grocery stores nationwide.

Majestic, Purefoods and Iberico are my favorite. Iberico I go crazy over.

Santis and the rest di ko pa na try, even sa earles. But I really like ham, gave me something to consider. Thanks for the share kiddo.
