You’ll often notice elderly persons who have shaking hands. Unless the person has Parkinson’s Disease, the shaking hands are usually essential tremors. Essential tremors are a fairly common  neurological condition that occurs as people age, and the tremors start with shaking hands or a shaking head. Gradually the shaking spreads to other parts of the body.  About 6-7% of people over age 60 suffer from essential tremors.

Usually, the shaking is noticed while trying to hold a cup or perform a delicate task. During rest, the tremors can vanish completely. The shaking may be quite frustrating and prevent people from performing certain tasks but it is not likely to lead to more serious conditions.

Unfortunately, there are few effective prescription medications are available for treating effective tremors. Many sufferers learn coping skills, often having to alter or give up favorite hobbies like sewing or playing cards.  Many people find that keeping the elbows close to your body when performing tasks is a good way to help control hand tremors.

Tips For Someone With Shaking Hands:

Fill cups, mugs and glasses half-full
Use straws when possible
Drink soup in a mug instead of using a bowl and spoon
Men-use an electric razor when shaving
