Now in addition to helping older person’s  bodies stay in better shape, exercise helps older person’s minds stay in better shape. New research has found that aerobic exercise can help senior citizens  retain metal abilities, including memory, longer.  Fitter seniors consistently scored better on a wide range of tests measuring cognitive abilities.  Aerobic exercises include running, walking, riding a bicycle or any exercise that gets the heart pumping.

Some low impact fitness activities for seniors include:

organized exercise classes like water aerobics,  yoga, Pilates or tai chi classes
recreational exercises like dancing
endurance exercises like stationary bicycling, bicycling or walking
Tai chi, yoga and Pilates classes are also good for seniors who would like to improve their balance and flexibility. When balance  improves, seniors get out more as they are less afraid of falling.

There is a suitable exercise program for all seniors, regardless of health or impairment. Seniors should check with their doctor to determine what exercises are appropriate for their level of health or before starting any exercise program.  Anyone who has not exercised in years should start slowly, taking are to stretch well before exercising.

Added benefits to seniors who exercise regularly include lowered blood sugar levels, a reduced risk of depression, a decreased risk of heart disease and lower cholesterol levels.
