Mayweather picks off Pacquiao to join boxing greats

Floyd Mayweather danced his way to a unanimous decision over frustrated Manny Pacquiao here Saturday to win the richest fight in history and cement his place in the pantheon of boxing greats.
Boos rang out from a pro-Pacquiao Las Vegas crowd as Mayweather's emphatic victory was confirmed by all three scorecards after 12 rounds of cat and mouse action.
Mayweather comfortably picked off his Filipino rival to snuff out any chance of the full-blooded slugfest that the more aggressive Pacquiao was hoping to ignite in front of the crowd of 16,507.
The win extended Mayweather's remarkable 19-year unbeaten record to 48-0, putting him within one fight of equalling Rocky Marciano's legendary milestone of 49-0.
The 38-year-old Mayweather retained his World Boxing Council and World Boxing Association welterweight titles and seized Pacquiao's World Boxing Organization belt by winning the fight on all three of the judges' scorecards.
"I am the American dream," Mayweather said. "I knew I had him from round one. I have so much experience I could calculate his moves.
"I was born a winner and I am going to die a winner.
Mayweather said he hopes the win will silence critics who accused him of ducking Pacquiao and hand-picking opponents he knew he could beat in order to keep his unblemished record intact.
"Everyone said this guy could beat Floyd. That Floyd is a chicken. The non believers, well Floyd turned them into believers."
Saturday's fight is widely believed to be the most lucrative in boxing history with revenues of $400 million.
- Judges emphatic -
Ringside judge Dave Moretti scored the bout 118-110 for Mayweather, while judges Glenn Feldman and Bert Clements both scored it 116-112 for the American.
But when the results were announced the pro-Pacquiao crowd booed lustily and tried to drown out Mayweather's interview inside the ring.
Their Filipino star Pacquiao suffered the sixth loss of his career to go with 57 victories and two draws.
Pacquiao said he was hindered by an injured right shoulder that he hurt in training several weeks ago.
"I did my best but my best wasn't good enough," Pacquiao said. "From the third round on I felt a pain in my shoulder."
Fans in the Philippines echoed the disappointment of those in the ring, crying foul over the judges' decision and claiming their man was robbed of a deserving victory.
They filled gymnasiums, cinemas and bars as the Southeast Asian nation of 100 million people stopped in its tracks for Pacquiao's battle with Mayweather.
"Pacquiao was cheated. Mayweather didn't land a single solid punch," said cable television technician Romeo Rivera, 41.
There is no denying that the 36-year-old Pacquiao made Mayweather work for the victory and hit the American with "three or four" thundering shots.
He was the aggressor, pressing the action from the first round and was able to land some right-left combinations on Mayweather's head, especially on the ropes and in the final seconds of the early rounds.
But ultimately Pacquiao wasn't able to keep up his frenzied early pace for all 12 rounds and Mayweather, who was the bigger of the two fighters, managed to set traps which allowed him to slip in counterpunches and hard right hands that kept the Filipino southpaw at bay.
Even so, Pacquiao said he thought he did enough to earn the victory.
"I thought I won the fight," he said. "He didn't do nothing."
- September finale? -
Mayweather reiterated afterwards that he plans to retire after his next fight in September which will fulfil his six-fight contract to Showtime Sports.
"My last fight is in September. I'll do that and I will hang it up," said Mayweather, estimated to have earned more than $200 million for one night's work. Pacquiao will receive well over $100 million in a 60-40 purse split the fighters agreed to beforehand.
The entrance of the fighters to the ring was delayed about 45 minutes because of problems with the heavy demand for pay-per-view telecast and the providers ability to distribute it.
Some of the biggest names in Hollywood, entertainment and sport were in attendance, including director Clint Eastwood, actors Robert De Niro, Jon Voight, Denzel Washington, Bradley Cooper, musician Sting, former NBA star Magic Johnson and talk show host Jimmy Kimmel, who visited Pacquiao in his dressing room before the fight.
Only a lucky few had tickets to the bout but thousands more milled around the outside of the Grand Garden arena and in the hotel's casino.
Mayweather made a grand entrance befitting of his superstar status. He was accompanied by his "The Money Team" which includes his father/trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr.
But Pacquiao arrived first to the ring, smiling relentlessly and even taking a selfie with long-time trainer Freddie Roach during his entrance.

$400 million generated out of this just to see 2 midgets punching each other. We have all been duped. With that money, I want to see blood all over the canvas. One ran around and the other was a frustrated retard trying to catch him. I got more entertainment watching the toilet spins my poo around the drain. Boxing is now dead to me.

its just what i guessed Manny Fail to cut the distance against floyd..

everybody knows how Floyd fight  and its not a reason why Manny lost

cause im sure they made plans to counter it i guess Manny's execution didn't go well..

that's his problem on  his last fight with Bradley which commentators said before

a "poor man's COPY of Floyd"..

also i did expect those judges will be favoring Floyd on the fight

the only way Manny should've won is knockin out the lights of Floyd..

Manny should've punished him with body blows so the bastard cant run around..

especially on the clinch where Floyd done dozens of times..

last thing most of the people lost their bets but not as much as this guy

speakin of bets hihihi i won against my workmates

Ang laki ng epekto ng pagkakasali ni Pacquiao sa religion niya ngayon. Talagang nawala na ang killer instinct niya

Manny pacquiao would have won against Floyd Mayweather Jr. if the vintage version of him showed up.

One analyst said that Floyd Jr. used the amateur style of fighting wherein boxers are preoccupied with scoring points rather than going for the knockout.

For me...passion, humility and good attitude are what inspire people, not how much money you make. Floyd Jr. may have won the game but Pacman won the hearts of his kababayan.

I have been waiting for this fight for so long as so many others. But I think we all agreed that this should have happened on the prime of both fighters.

I saw Pacquiao evolved from a slugger, from a one handed fighter, and a double threat when he learned to use his right. The only thing that's left for MP is to prove that he can think on the ring. He has the speed and power all he needed was the wits. Beating Floyd would have established him as a complete fighter.

I expected the fight to be a run and gun type and that exactly what has happened. But in fairness to MP he did have a strategy going in. I even saw him anticipate Floyd's evasion paths and catches him in some point. He even startles Floyd and makes him think twice which way to go. To see a champion like Floyd up with his toes proves MP is doing something to get him off his comfort zone, it is the first time I seen Floyd work that much.

Sadly, Floyd's experience became evident and his tried and tested tactics has proven it works even with the people's champ. But I am impressed with Floyd's punching accuracy it's very obvious that if it is going to the score cards it will be Floyd's match. I was surprised that Floyd too was in the offense I actually expected him to run around. His clinches throws MP's rhythm off and frustrates him making him forget about the game plan. But that's part of his tactics, those mind games.

We didn't get the result that we want but both fighters did worked hard. It's obvious who the winner is, as much punches MP threw very few have landed. We saw them gave it all their best so I think it's a good win for Floyd.

Now we've seen the best fighters of boxing on the ring and seen how exciting (or not that exciting.) the match is the question now is "Who will bring in that much attention to boxing when those two eventually hangs their gloves?" I actually have no name on my mind so good luck to the sport.

The highlight of the match for me would have been the interview with MP right after the announcement of the winner. Ako ang nahihiya for MP at ang bully naman nung nag iinterview.  Haha...

even before this bout, i knew already that Manny is nowhere near Floyd's caliber.. the latter toyed with Marquez and MP had a bitter experience with Marquez... of course i'm with Pacman's corner but i use more my ability to study both player's statistics... hands down talaga its Mayweather's game...

much highly anticipated ang game na yan and a blockbuster at that so the security is really that close and tight... so siguro applicable lang ang 'mafia' na yan sa mga low profile bouts but not this one... tingin ko mas aggressive pa nga si Floyd sa laban than Pacquiao... so that explains why unanimous ang scorecards..

It's okay, inside the ring, Floyd is king. But Manny's winning outside the ring. Look at the aftermath.

manny did a fine job in the fight... however, floyd's also showed that power and speed alone cannot guarantee you a win... you have to be a thinker also and this is where he got the upperhand... i know many would disagree with me but from what i saw, he read manny very well...

There are so many people argue that Manny P won this fight but technicality and as many experts says, its Mayweather won.

though he won in not so convincing way, but if you look at it.. it is boxing clinic to its finest for Mayweather..

Pacquiao will end up in the hall of shame. He was given a chance to prove his true worth and he failed miserably. He's a sham and that shoulder injury he disclosed after the bout will cost him a fortune and credibility.  Ngayon pa lang, a class action suit has been filed by pay-per view customers, gamblers and organizers amounting to millions of dollars that he committed fraud and misrepresentation. They put their bets on him when he was actually injured.  If that is not enough, even the Nevada Athletic Com will prosecute him with perjury for failing to reveal his injury prior the fight.

Way to go pambansang kamao.

Nah come on you guys, it's pretty damn obvious. Check this article it's a good read :
http://www.boxing.com/mayweather_pacquiao_corporate_greed.html (http://www.boxing.com/mayweather_pacquiao_corporate_greed.html)

"This was not a fight. This was a money-generating event, plain and simple, conducted by two men who have lost their edge, who would prefer to don suits and ties than boxing trunks, who both signed on the dotted line, not to fight hard, but to cash a check unscathed. The round bell wasn’t a call to arms. It was Wall Street’s 9:30 a.m. signal that the market was open for business."

I've had enough of Pacman was like this, like that, Mayweather hug like this, run like that.

I agree with everyone in here, I don't think rematch is a possibility.
